Armand Rousseau

New Offer

Arriving Late March

The wines of Rousseau have no peer in Gevrey-Chambertin. No other grower has produced wines with their level of profundity and a similar track record over the decades. From top to bottom, they are the class of the village. We are always on the hunt for their wines—as you’d expect they’re maddeningly scarce and correspondingly expensive, but worth the trouble to track down.

These are some of the pinnacles of Burgundy, up there with anything made by DRC, Roumier, Leroy or any of the other usual suspects, all with excellent provenance and in good condition.  There are only small quantities of each bottling available, so if something strikes your fancy, don’t delay—it’s not often we can get these wines in.

Arriving Late March:

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013 750ML ($599.95) $499 pre-arrival special, 2 bottles available
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 93 points
“Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well defined and quite earthy bouquet, plenty of sous-bois character here, gently unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, fine tannins and a harmonious, caressing finish that demonstrates assiduous use of new oak. Everything just seems to effortless in this delightful Charmes-Chambertin from Armand Rousseau. Tasted September 2016.”
Antonio Galloni 92-94 points “An explosive, exuberant bouquet makes a strong first impression in the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin. Those signatures follow onto the palate, where the Charmes is quite opulent. Dark cherries, plums, spices and new leather blossom in a decidedly racy, supple Charmes that should drink well with minimal cellaring.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ML ($599.95) $499 pre-arrival special, 5 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92-94 points
“Intensity and volume are the first things that come to mind in the 2012 Charmes-Chambertin. Layers if blue/blackish fruit blossom in a wine that is beautifully textured and vibrant throughout. I very much like the intensity here. I tasted two different barrels of Charmes, both in different states of their evolution, which is why generally speaking I feel the wines aren’t fully formed just yet.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($499.95) $399 pre-arrival special, 1 bottle available
Antonio Galloni 91 points
“Red stone fruits, plums, menthol, rose petals and spices take shape nicely in the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin. In 2011, the Charmes-Chambertin is a bit savory and herbal, but it otherswise shows lovely balance and terrific overall depth in a pliant, mid-weight style that is best enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.”
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 90 points “Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Rousseau’s Charmes-Chambertin 2011 has an earthy bouquet, just a little stemmy but nicely defined with brambly red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and plenty of tertiary fruit, foursquare and a little austere on the saline, angular finish that does improve in the glass. This just needs to find its groove, but there is potential, especially because it performed so exquisitely a few months back.”

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2010 750ML ($799.95) $699 pre-arrival special, 2 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92-94 points
“The 2010 Charmes-Chambertin is deep, fleshy and totally seductive. It boasts striking inner perfume that serves as a recurring thread with which endless nuances of fruit are woven together. Finessed, silky tannins provide the backbone for all of the aromas and flavors to shine. I loved the integrity of the fruit in the Charmes. Rousseau’s Charmes is roughly 60% Mazoyères and 40% true Charmes.”

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2009 750ML ($799.95) $699 pre-arrival special, 2 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 91-93 points
“The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin emerges from the glass with lovely radiance and openness in its ripe, juicy fruit. The Charmes is already rather forward, and at this stage appears to be a relatively early-maturing wine. The oak is also a bit pronounced. Sweet, textured floral notes wrap around the long, polished finish. Rousseau’s Charmes is technically 60% Mazoyères.”

Wine Spectator 94 points
“Elegant and beautifully poised between pure raspberry, cherry, wild berry, floral and mineral aromas and flavors and a vibrant structure. This graceful, linear red is very harmonious—deceptively so, in that you might want to drink it now. Needs a few years to gain complexity. Best from 2012 through 2025. 20 cases imported.”

New Week – New Arrivals

Oregon

A cool wine for a great cause—and one of the cheapest ways to drink Pinot from the Clos Electrique.
Cameron Winery ‘Silvestre’ Pinot Noir Clos Electrique Vineyard, Dundee Hills 2017 750ML ($49.95) $37 special, 21 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote:
The 2017 Silvestre Pinot Noir is a fascinating, compelling bottling. This wine is from a block of Clos Electrique right next to Worden Hill Road that John Paul left un-farmed in 2017 in protest of proposed immigration policies. He never intended to make wine out of it—there was just a sign declaring that the block is representative of what vineyards would look like after mass deportations.  Nevertheless, as harvest rolled around, the fruit looked really clean, if haphazard.  No pruning or fruit thinning had yielded clusters that were tiny and scattered, but the team decided they should pick it and see what happened. The resulting wine, Silvestre (“Wild” in Spanish), is what happened to the ~two barrels of Pinot Noir after they brought it back and fermented it.  It shows some of the Clos Electrique DNA in its wildness, but in a leaner, brighter, slightly more savory package.  This won’t be a long-lived bottle, we’d guess, but for drinking in the next five years it’s a bright, fresh charming wine.  Cameron will be donating proceeds from the sale of the Silvestre to Lutheran Family Services and CAUSA, which provide services for immigrant communities in the Willamette Valley.  Making these excellent bottles for a good cause.

The new releases of Lingua Franca’s entry level wines are always exciting and the ’18 Chard is very true to the house’s style and quality.
Lingua Franca ‘Avni’ Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2018 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“The aroma is complex with layers of lemongrass, honeycomb, citrus, and spice. On the palate, the wine is silky, round and supple, with a long finish. The wine has an open texture and deeper flavor, reflecting the even growing conditions throughout the season. The finish is long and mouthwatering.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

This reads as very classically Eola-Amity and is a fantastic expression of the estate vineyard for an entry level price.
Lingua Franca ‘Avni’ Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2018 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“The Avni Pinot Noir reflects the greater impact of our own Lingua Franca Estate fruit in the wine. The resulting aromas are beautiful expressions of rose petal, wet stone, black plum, red cherry, and savory elements. It has a remarkably delicate tannin structure, but is also layered with seductive fruit. It is vibrant and fresh.”

Last call: The last round of this sold out in a flash. We secured more, but once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.
White Rose Estate Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($39.95) $24 special, 35 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 93 points
“Broad and spicy, with blueberry and plum flavors at the core, showing hints of licorice and smoke as the firm tannins lend structure to the long finish. Needs cellaring to gain flesh. Best from 2018 through 2024. 853 cases made.”

Les Lunes Astral Blend Red Wine, California 2019 750ML ($24.95) $19.90 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Distributor note
“Light and ethereal, this red wine is meant to be served chilled and to refresh. The Pinot Noir and Zinfandel bring loads of bright and fresh berry fruit on the nose and palate. The Carignane Rosé, Chenin Blanc and Colombard all help contribute to the freshness, liveliness, and acidity of the wine.
“Varieties: 20% Zinfandel – Kimberly Vineyard, Sonoma County; 20% Zinfandel Rosé – Fox Vineyard, Lodi; 20% Pinot noir – Pyaleh Vineyard, Los Carneros, Sonoma County; 20% French Colombard – Redwood Valley, Mendocino County; 10% Carignane Rosé – Mendocino County; 10% Chenin Blanc – Redwood Valley, Mendocino County.
“Farming: Les Lunes manages and performs all aspects of farming at the Kimberly and Pyaleh Vineyard. Everything is 100% organic; neither synthetic herbicides nor insecticides are used and all sprays are timed in relation to the moon. Composting and cover crops are used to increase the organic material, life and vitality of the soils. The balance of the blend comes from farmers who farm their old-vine vineyards with focus, care, and 100% organic practices.”

Renaissance Vineyard & Winery Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc, North Yuba 1989 375ML ($39.95) $14 special, 12 half-bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Medium to dark amber-brown in color, this wine smells of burnt orange peel, a hint of bergamot, and cafe au lait.  In the mouth dark burnt honey, cafe au lait, and a touch of even darker molasses flavors have a wonderful toasted grain quality to them that makes this wine seem almost more savory than sweet despite its significant sugar levels.  Really compelling and interesting, with plenty of acidity to keep this wine lively after all this time.  A phenomenal flavor experience.  Moderately sweet. Residual sugar:  9.3%. Alcohol 13.6%.”

Clos Sainte Magdeleine Cotes de Provence Rose 2018 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“Cassis is not only an active port, but what Kermit calls “an earthly paradise.”  The vineyards of Clos Sainte Magdeleine are particularly stunning. They jut out on a private cape to meet majestic limestone cliffs, poised spectacularly above the sparkling, azure Mediterranean. With landscapes such as these, it is only fitting that writers and poets alike have found inspiration in Cassis… The Cotes de Provence rose is fermented in stainless steel from direct press. It does not undergo malolactic fermentation. From a parcel located on the seaside, in the commune of La Ciotat.”

Francois Plouzeau has emerged as one of the top natural producers in the Loire, synthesizing properly ripe, rich fruit with bright tangy acidity and a vibrancy that only comes from wines that are minimally “made.”  These are wines made in an old-school Loire fashion, with low yields from cool sites and biodynamically farmed vineyards. In both red and white, they manage to combine a surprising seriousness with a purity and deliciousness that marks them as truly top class Loire wines—they’re natural, sure, but are cleanly made and classically proportioned.

Domaine de la Garreliere Touraine ‘Le Blanc de la Mariee’, Loire 2018 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“Absolutely not the run of the mill high-yield, machine-harvested, green and acid Touraine Sauvignon. And that can be a problem—because many people are so used to the hyper brisk norm that they don’t know what to do with a textured wine like this. La Mariée is the right stuff.”

Domaine de la Garreliere Touraine Cendrillon, Loire 2018 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“This takes the domain’s best Sauvignon from tank and pairs it with 10-15% Chardonnay from barrel along with some 5% of Sauvignon from barrel. The wood is a minimum of three years old. Cendrillon is French for Cinderella, the folk tale of the oppressed girl who rose from ashes (cinders) to become a figure of beauty and grace in glass slippers. The label for this cuvée comes from a painting done by a friend of the Plouzeau family. Note that the label for this wine indicates the domain as ‘Domaine de la Garrelière’.”

Domaine de la Garreliere Touraine Le Rouge, Loire 2018 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“Classic, delicious Loire Cabernet Franc that goes down so easy in the summer with a slight chill on it.”

Authentic old-school Gigondas
Clos du Joncuas Gigondas, Rhone 2016 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-12 Clos du Joncuas Gigondas, Rhone 2016 750ML ($479.95) $359 special (that’s only $29.92/bottle!)
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 93 points
“Vibrant ruby. Smoke-accented cherry and red berries on the highly perfumed nose, which takes on sexy incense and baking spice nuances with air. Smooth, concentrated and appealingly sweet, offering mineral- and spice-accented boysenberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors and a spicy touch of cracked pepper. Finishes silky, sweet and impressively long, with harmonious tannins and lingering spiciness.”
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2016 Gigondas is a blend of 80% Grenache and the rest Mourvèdre and Cinsault. It’s full-bodied, plush in texture and maybe even a bit warm, but this big and balanced wine offers plenty of black cherry fruit and hints of cinnamon and allspice. Velvety and long on the finish, it should drink well for 6-7 years.”
Decanter 93 points “Pure stewed damsons on the nose, really enlivening, with some wild strawberry within. The palate is medium-bodied, with gentle, textural wet-clay tannins and vibrant damson acidity. Drinkable, svelte and very well put together and in good balance.”

Anne-Sophie Dubois is, in some circles, already a name-brand, rock star producer.  Dubois makes wines with traditional Burgundian macerations—no carbonic here.  She also expertly farms several hectares of prime vineyards in Fleurie—all organically. Her winemaking style is definitely influenced by natural wine (there are no tricks in the cellar and no new oak) but she uses sulfur and the wines are clean and elegant.

Anne-Sophie Dubois Fleurie l’Alchimiste, Beaujolais 2018 750ML ($34.95) $28 special, 32 bottles in stock now
No reviews for the 2018 vintage. Most recent review provided for reference.
Josh Raynolds 93 points
“[2016 Vintage] Deep bright-rimmed ruby. Intense, mineral-accented red/dark berry scents pick up a sexy floral quality with air. Concentrated yet lively in the mouth, offering juicy, spice-tinged black raspberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that show excellent clarity and back-end thrust. A touch of candied licorice appears on the gently tannic finish, which lingers with outstanding, mineral-driven tenacity.”

Anne-Sophie Dubois Fleurie Les Labourons, Beaujolais 2018 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 34 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote:
Les Labourons is the climat that all of the estate’s wines hail from.  This new top cuvee (replacing the Clepsydre bottling) represents one of the best wines that the Beaujolais rising star has made.

Veglio Michelino & Figlio Barolo DOCG, Piedmont 2015 750ML ($39.95) $28 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
James Suckling 92 points
“Some swanky, glossy oak adds toffee aromas to the ripe red cherries. Plenty of vanilla here, too. The palate delivers a fullish and round impression with plenty of oak again in the mix. Praline and ripe red cherries in abundance here. Try from 2022.”

TREND ALERT: Castello di Bossi

More Stock Arriving Tuesday!

This super-bargain best-ever Chianti sold so fast, we locked down another three cases, arriving Tuesday. Don’t miss your chance to snag what everyone else is buying!

Castello di Bossi remains one of the absolute stars of Chianti Classico, producing epic bottles from Castelnuovo Berardenga in the southern part of the DOCG (Felsina hails from the same village). They’re best known for their top-class Riserva, “Berardo” (the slang for someone who comes from Berardenga).  This is a wine that James Suckling, who made his name as the Tuscan reviewer for Wine Spectator, called “the best Chianti Classico ever made here in living memory” while awarding it a whopping 98 points. You’d expect a wine like that to go for a low triple-digit price, but because Chianti remains one of the hidden gems of the wine world, this wine is…$36.  Yes, that stunned look is deserved.  This is one of the best points to price ratios we’ve seen and we stocked up this appropriately.

Re-Arriving Tomorrow:

“The best Chianti Classico ever made here in living memory”
Castello di Bossi Berardo, Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2015 750ML ($41.95) $36 re-arrival special
James Suckling 98 points
“The floral aromas are so enticing with rose petals and lavender, which follow through to a full body with beautiful density of fruit. A long and complete finish. The best Chianti Classico ever made here in living memory. Even better than the 1961. Drink or hold.”

“One of the most exciting domaines in all of the Côte de Beaune”– John Gilman

The current incarnation of Clos de la Chapelle is clearly one of those estates this is Going Place—the praise keeps coming and it won’t be long until these are thought of (and priced with) wines like D’Angerville, Lafon and Lafarge as some of the top bottlings in Volnay.  The winery now owns land in an array of the top vineyard sites in Volnay, Pommard and Corton and makes truly excellent renditions of each—with moderate whole cluster use, small amounts of new oak and brilliantly balanced ripeness.

This is a domaine that’s only been around in its current incarnation since 2011, and yet has already been a featured winery at La Paulee and has received strong reviews from both Burghound and John Gilman. “Shimmering orange. Fresh pit fruit, red berry and floral qualities on the highly perfumed nose, along with suggestions of dusty minerals and orange zest. Juicy, focused and lithe on the palate, offering intense nectarine, red currant, strawberry and candied lavender flavors supported by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows outstanding clarity and mineral cut on a very long, sappy finish that strongly echoes the floral and pit fruit notes.”

Importer note
“Made entirely from estate fruit in 2017, “Chateau” is primarily Cinsault, with increasingly smaller amounts of Grenache, Mourvedre, Tibouren, and Syrah. This is a higher-toned, more floral, more filigree wine than its brother above, with subtle herbal notes framing clean, lifted fruit on the nose. Though equally as dense—and perhaps more penetrating due to its more overt mineral character—it is no richer than the “Commanderie,” and it expresses the vintage’s firm tension with elegance.”

Staff Pick

Saul:
So…based on my Staff Pick track record, it’s pretty clear that Cabernet Franc is one of my favorite grapes.  I love wines that ride the edge between fruit and savoriness, which is what the best Cab Franc does with aplomb.  Of recent bottles made from the grape, Filliatreau’s “Vieilles Vignes” bottlings is a recent standout—a tremendous bottle of wine for under $30.

Made from the estates oldest vines (the oldest of which are more than a century in age), this wine is dense, powerful and dark fruited, belying its stainless steel elevage.  I had previously associated Filliatreau solely with bright, easy-drinking wines, but their VV bottling has much more in common with the single vineyard wines of Thierry Germain or Collier (minus the oak, obviously) than it does with their lower end products.  This is a wine that clearly has the structure and intensity to age beautifully, but I’ll drink a few bottles on the young side alongside a steak or wild mushrooms.

Two Tete du Cuvee Champagnes

Arriving Next Month

Piper Heidsieck’s “Rare”:

Piper-Heidsieck is best known for their red and gold labeled entry level wine, a bottling that always over delivers for its very modest price.  Among true aficionados of Champagne, though, they’re best known for their top end “Rare” bottlings—wines with incredible complexity, depth and nuance that are among the most coveted in Champagne.  Of particular note is this bottling—the legendary 2002.  We thought we’d sold our last bottle, but managed to secure another twenty, arriving in April.  It’s in a beautiful place right now, but if you want you can age it a bit longer.  But, really, this is tasty enough at the moment that it’s going to be hard to keep your hands off it.

Arriving ETA April

Only 20 bottles available!
Piper-Heidsieck Rare Brut Millesime, Champagne 2002 750ML ($199.95) $169 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 97 points
“Impeccably balanced and silky, with finely honed acidity shaping the expansive flavors of toasted brioche, crushed blackberry, lemon preserves and honey, revealing hints of Frangelico liqueur and smoked nut. Rich and vivid, with a lasting finish. Drink now through 2027. 2,500 cases made.”
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“A gorgeous wine that’s a legend in the making, the 2002 Rare Brut is a blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, with just under 10 grams of dosage. Offering incredible notes of stone fruits, brioche, white flowers, and hints of toasted nuts, this flat out awesome wine is concentrated and opulent, yet still dances on the palate with vibrant acidity and great, great finish. It’s going to drink beautifully for another two to three decades. Bravo! This cuvee has only been made in 1976, 1979, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1998, 1999, 2002, and in 2007.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The pale gold, greenish shimmering 2002 Rare Millesime – 30% Pinot Noir and 70% Chardonnay – offers a very intense and rich, yet fresh nose of exotic fruit aromas of pineapples, mango, kiwi and passion fruit. On the palate, this is a mouthful of luscious Champagne: powerful and intense, but pure and with the complexity of matured wines. The finish is very exotic in its fruit aromas, but also persistently mineral.”
Decanter 95 points
“Looks like becoming another legendary Piper in the same style and league as 1988, ’76 and ’55. Already focused and concentrated. Tough acids might scare some but sublime coffee and biscuity complexity is building up slowly. Sensual wine for all occasions.”
John Gilman 95 points
“I reported on the 2002 Piper-Heidsieck Rare a year ago and time does not seem to have touched it at all over the last twelve months, for if anything, this particular bottle seemed even younger than last year’s! The wine beautifully synthesizes the ripe fruit of ’02 with great structural integrity and seems likely to drink at its peak for at least another twenty years. The bouquet is a pure, complex blend of apple, white peach, a touch of leesiness, a great base of soil, fresh-baked bread, a touch of citrus peel and an overtly smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and superbly detailed, with a fine core of fruit, elegant mousse, bright acids and excellent backend mineral drive on the long, vibrant and very classy finish. (Drink between 2016-2035).”

Charles Heidsieck’s Blanc des Millenaires:

Imagine there was a Champagne, produced by a top tier, historic house.  Imagine that Champagne was a blanc de blancs, from some of the top Grand Cru villages and aged for an extended time on the lees before release.  Further still, this mythical Champagne has only been released five times in the last forty years—truly, only the best vintages made the cut.  You’d think this wine would be outlandishly expensive and impossible to acquire.  You’d be wrong, though, because we’re offering Charles Heisieck’s Blanc de Millenaires for about the same price as a bottle of NV Krug. If you want great Champagne to taste like Grand Cru White Burgundy with fine bubbles, this is something you need to jump on.

Charles Heidsieck is one of the great, historic houses of Champagne, but because of their small size, they tend to be overlooked in conversations about elite wines in the region.  That’s unfair on so many levels, from their excellent and inexpensive NV to this wine, the top-of-the-line Blanc des Millenaires, produced only in the (truly) best years. Millenaires is a white whale of the Champagne world.  Even most “picky” houses declare 5-6 vintages a decade, but Heidsieck will only release this wine under the most perfect of circumstances (the last vintage released was the epic 1995).  The resulting wine is powerful, intense but beyond elegant, as only Chardonnay given extended lees aging can provide.  We’ve secured a small parcel arriving next month and are excited to offer it at exceptional pricing.  The winery has been mum on how long it will be until the next release, so this may be your best chance at this wine for some time.

Arriving ETA April:

Only 36 bottles available!
Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires, Champagne 2004 750ML ($199.95) $169 pre-arrival special
Decanter 98 points – World Wine Awards 2019
“This Blanc de Blancs Champagne is a bright morning gold in colour, with fine-seamed bubbles and rich, expressive and expansive aromas. Beaten cream, pounded hazels, a hint of baking apples, brioche fresh from the oven. But all these notes are drawn with great subtlety, underscoring the fruit quality of the Chardonnay vineyards used in this blend. On the palate, the wine retains all that aromatic grace and amplitude, marrying it to a shapely fruit presence, vibrant though now well-rounded acidity and textural charm, too. A head-turner. Drink 2019-2028.”
Wine Advocate 95 points “Disgorged in November 2017 after 13 years on the lees, the stunning 2004 Blanc des Millénaires is a worthy successor to the 1995. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of green apple, pear, brioche and fresh pastry that are framed by a lovely smoky, autolytic top note, the wine is full-bodied, ample and concentrated, with ripe acids, superb depth at the core and a textural, vinous quality while remaining very classical in profile. The finish is long and expansive. A blend of Chardonnay from Cramant, Avize, Oger, Mesnil-sur-Oger and Vertus, it saw nine grams per liter dosage. This is a terrific blanc de blancs from Charles Heidsieck that has a long and glorious future ahead of it. Sadly, the price of this cuvée has finally caught up with the quality.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “A seamless Champagne, showing a texture of raw silk, this weaves vibrant acidity with an expressive range of glazed apple and poached white cherry fruit flavors, with pickled ginger and saffron spice details and rich notes of pastry cream, toast and coffee liqueur. More about finesse than power, this is long and creamy on the mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2028. [Reviewed Dec 2018]”

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru 2002 750ML ($2999.95) $2,699 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Wine Advocate 94-96 points
“The 2002 Chambertin Clos de Beze bursts with spicy red cherry aromas. This medium to full-bodied wine has an exceptionally spicy personality that is crammed with red licorice (Twizzlers), candied raspberries, Asian spices, and blackberries. Wonderfully focused and armed with substantial depth, this medium to full-bodied wine’s exceedingly long finish displays awesomely ripe tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.”
Burghound 94 points “(with thanks to Steve Baum and opened from personal storage). While not nearly as reserved as it once was the beautifully spicy and well-layered nose is on the restrained side with a distinctly earthy character to the elegant mix of both red and dark pinot fruit aromas that are just now beginning to display secondary hints. There is fine concentration to the utterly delicious flavors that are exuberant, big, rich, round and seductively sappy before culminating in an explosive and strikingly persistent finish. This remains an exciting wine of exceptional purity and balance. For my taste this is very much still on the way up and while it can certainly be drunk with pleasure it seems quite clear that this is nowhere yet near its apogee and as such, I would recommend allowing this to continue to slumber. Multiple and consistent notes save for one bottle that was initially reduced but quickly opened up.”
Stephen Tanzer 94+ points “Good ruby-red. Black raspberry, licorice and chocolatey oak on the nose. Offers compelling lushness, sweetness and fat for a 2002; wonderfully harmonious from the outset. Very suave, clearly defined flavors of blackberry and blueberry retain their shape through to the very long aftertaste. Tannins are quite fine.”

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Clos Saint-Jacques, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($999.95) $749 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Stephen Tanzer 93+ points
“Good full red.  Spicy red berries, cherry, licorice and a hint of horseradish on the nose.  Juicy, brisk and taut; not hugely fleshy but energetic and penetrating.  Conveys an impression of density without weight in the manner of the best 2011s.  Tightly wound and very backward, finishing with terrific spicy persistence.  Eric Rousseau bottled his 2011s in April of 2013; his bottles now have the domain name embossed on the bottom of the glass.”

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Clos Saint-Jacques, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($999.95) $779 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni 94-97 points
“Rousseau’s 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques possesses gorgeous aromatic lift and energy. Polished and refined throughout, the 2013 is super-expressive. Winemaker Frédéric Robert adds that the grapes were especially small in 2013, with virtually no juice. Once again, Rousseau’s Clos St. Jacques looks to be one of the wines of the vintage.”
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 95+ points “Good deep red. Much less reduced on the nose than Ruchottes, offering captivating, high-pitched perfume of raspberry, rose petal, blood orange and crushed stone. On the palate, the tangy raspberry, red cherry and mineral flavors show a penetrating character and superb lift without any weightiness or hardness. Finishes with very fine-grained tannins and mounting floral perfume. This brisk, cool, aristocratic wine is built for a graceful evolution in bottle.”

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru ‘Clos des Ruchottes’ Monopole 2001 750ML ($899.95) $799 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Burghound 89-92 points
“Wonderfully complex nose of plumy, intensely earthy fruit infused with subtle notes of truffle and dried herbs leading to bright, vibrant, medium weight, round and extremely pure flavors that are utterly delicious and seductive. The finish is solidly structured, rich, extremely elegant and pure with outstanding precision. I very much like this as it’s stylish yet with real substance.”

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru ‘Clos des Ruchottes’ Monopole 2010 750ML ($899.95) $799 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 95-97 points
“The 2010 Ruchottes-Chambertin is an intensely cool, reticent wine. The bouquet recalls the Mazis, but then the firm Ruchottes tannins set in. Ultimately the Ruchottes is built on purity, definition and nuance. The chiseled aromas and flavors possess stunning detail, but it will be some time before the 2010 is ready to drink. Still, I very much like the energy and drive. Bright, floral notes add lift and vibrancy on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2045.”

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru ‘Clos des Ruchottes’ Monopole 2013 750ML ($799.95) $699 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Burghound 92-95 points
“A discreet touch of wood frames notably ripe but fresh aroma of dark currant, plum, truffle, earth and wet stone. There is outstanding delineation and intensity to the refined and pure medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by deceptively pliant tannins on the saline finish that seems to be constructed from liquid stone, all wrapped in a wonderfully long and pure finish. Textbook Ruchottes.”

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ML ($2999.95) $2,549 pre-arrival special, 1 bottle available
Antonio Galloni 97 points
“Rousseau’s 2012 Chambertin towers out of the glass. Sophisticated, finessed yet also powerful to the core, the 2012 Chambertin captures a compelling range of expressions. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, leather and cedar meld into a huge core of fruit in a dramatic, powerful Chambertin that will require considerable bottle age to show the full breadth of its potential.”
Stephen Tanzer 96+ points “Healthy medium red. Reticent aromas of redcurrant, black cherry, raspberry and smoky minerality. Hugely concentrated and sweet, but in a distinctly cooler and less expressive style than the Clos de Bèze. Sappy, saline wine with an incredible whiplash of a finish that leaves the palate saturated. Showing more red fruits than black in the early going, this is still an infant.”
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 96 points “Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru has a touch of mint on the nose, complementing the mixture of red and black fruit, a pastille-like purity developing with time. This is very charming and the oak is neatly folded into the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, the acidity perfectly judged and lending the tension and poise one expects from a Chambertin. It does lose a little intensity in the glass but it’s from such a high point it is neither here nor there. This is a wonderful Chambertin.”

“Harmonious and elegant, this red boasts rose, cherry, leafy tobacco and chalky, stony flavors allied to a juicy profile. Firm and mouthwatering on the finish. Best from 2020 through 2035. 40 cases imported.”

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Lavaux Saint-Jacques, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2010 750ML ($699.95) $549 pre-arrival special, only 2 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 90-92+ points
“The 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques wafts from the glass with crushed flowers, spices and expressive small red fruit. Weightless and impeccable throughout, the Lavaux St. Jacques impresses for its transparency and delicacy. This was the last parcel to be harvested in 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.”
Burghound 90-92 points “This resembles closely the nose of the villages as the composition of the aromas is similar except here there is greater elegance and a bit more complexity as well. The cool and mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors possess excellent delineation and plenty of intensity, particularly on the firm, linear and tension-filled finale.”

“Hard candy, sweet red berries and flowers are some of the notes found in the 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques. Here it is the wine’e energy and brilliance that stand out most. My impression is that the 2012 will drink well pretty much upon release given its mid-weight personality.”
Wine Advocate 90 points “Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques from Domaine Armand Rousseau has an intriguing bouquet, quite complex with subtle tertiary scents infiltrating the brambly red berry fruit. This is well defined, a little laconic at first but it grows in confidence, becomes less tight-lipped. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannin, a little disjointed at the moment and the oak needs time to assimilate. At the moment, the nose deserves a better palate, yet it will surely coalesce into a superior wine than it is at present.”
