Resonance Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($39.95) Regularly $34.90, $28 subscriber-only pre-arrival special, ETA December 9th
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2014 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, the second release from Louis Jadot in their new venture in Oregon, was vinified at Trisaetum, and as far as I am aware will continue that way until their own winery is up and running. It is a strong follow-up to their debut 2013. It is a blend of grapes coming from different vineyards from the Willamette Valley, including Resonance, Decouverte and others. The bouquet is bestowed with ample brambly red berry fruit, perhaps a little “fuller” than the 2013, but with fine definition. The palate is well balanced with a similar fruit profile to the first release, perhaps just showing a little more edginess, a Pinot Noir that in a funny way expresses the wealth of knowledge behind it.”
Wine Enthusiast 92 points “*Editors’ Choice* This is the second release this year from Maison Louis Jadot’s Oregon project-both wines are labeled Résonance, but this is the Willamette Valley cuvée, not the Résonance vineyard bottling. Some estate fruit is included, and it is a subtle and detailed wine, with pretty mulberry and pie-cherry fruit. Thirteen months in 20% new French oak adds light mocha highlights, and it is as smooth and refined as one might expect from master winemaker Jacques Lardière.”

Johan Vineyards Petillant Naturel Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special
Winery note “Pétillant Naturel is a method of producing sparkling wine by bottling the wine during the primary, alcoholic fermentation to capture the carbon dioxide that is being naturally released (also referred to as “Methode Ancestrale”). This sparkling rosé was made from all estate-grown, biodynamic certified Pinot Noir grapes.  The fruit was picked relatively early, at lower sugars and higher acidity. The wine fermented in a stainless steel tank before it was bottled at the tail end of its primary fermentation.  It is unfiltered and contains lees.”

Analemma Chardonnay Oak Ridge Vineyard 2014 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous “Bright pale yellow. Reticent, subtly perfumed scents of nectarine, macadamia nut and minerals plus a suggestion of red berries. Ripe acidity intensifies the wine’s lively stone fruit, pear and lemon flavors and extends its lightly saline, spicy, firm-edged finish. Lovely energy and a light touch here but could use a bit more give. I’d wait a year or two before pulling the cork. This south-facing vineyard at 1,400 feet in the cool Columbia Gorge ripens slowly and late.”

A wild, assertively perfumed bouquet displays scents of mineral-accented poached pear, honey, toasted nuts and smoky lees, with a suave floral element building in the glass. Stains the palate with ripe orchard and pit fruit flavors, along with suggestions of buttered toast, marzipan and bitter lemon pith. Shows excellent clarity and power on the finish, which clings with strong fruity persistence. This complex, concentrated Champagne would be fantastic with aged or blue cheeses.”

Jose Michel & Fils Pinot Meunier Blanc de Noirs Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “Light yellow-gold. Musky red berries, citrus pith and toasted bread on the perfumed nose. Lithe and precise but surprisingly concentrated, offering bitter blood orange and anise flavors and a bracing jolt of chalky minerality. Smoothly combines power and energy, with a suave floral pastille nuance building on the very long, spicy finish.” JR

France – Beaujolais

Daniel Bouland Morgon Delys Vieilles Vignes, Beaujolais 2015 750ML ($31.95) $27 special
Case-12 Daniel Bouland Morgon Delys Vieilles Vignes, Beaujolais 2015 750ML ($349.95) $289 special (that’s only $24.08/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2015 Morgon De Lys Vieilles Vignes, which includes a hectare planted in 1926 and is aged in stainless steel rather than foudres, has a very complex bouquet with cola-tinged blackberry and briary fruit, broody in style with subtle slate-like aromas that it has in common with the Côte de Brouilly this year. The palate is very concentrated with almost honeyed like notes infusing the red berry fruit. This is plush and generous, though it avoids being overbearing thanks to that tightly wound acidity. If you are seeking a more opulent take on Morgon whilst retaining typicité then this will fit the bill. This is a killer Beaujolais from Daniel Bouland.”

Daniel Bouland Cote de Brouilly Cuvee Melanie, Beaujolais 2015 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Case-12 Daniel Bouland Cote de Brouilly Cuvee Melanie, Beaujolais 2015 750ML ($299.95) $259 special (that’s only $21.58/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2015 Cote de Brouilly Cuvee Melanie has a more primal bouquet compared to the 2015 Chiroubles: blackberry and bilberry fruit with almost slate-like aromas interwoven. There is great mineralite locked in here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is very pure with a citric edge, hints of fig and date lending a little exoticism towards the finish whilst always remaining linear and tensile. This is another very impressive 2015 from Daniel Bouland.”

Pierre-Marie Chermette Domaine du Vissoux Cuvee Pierre Chermette, Beaujolais 2015 750ML ($17.95) $14 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 90 points “Bright violet. Vibrant cherry and dark berry aromas, along with lively floral and spice qualities. Silky and incisive, offering bitter cherry and blackberry flavors given lift by tangy acidity. Clean and nervy on the finish, which features hints of candied flowers and licorice.”

Pierre-Marie Chermette Domaine du Vissoux Cuvee Traditionnelle Vieilles Vignes, Beaujolais 2015 750ML ($19.95) $16 special
Case-12 Pierre-Marie Chermette Domaine du Vissoux Cuvee Traditionnelle Vieilles Vignes, Beaujolais 2015 750ML ($199.95) $169 special (that’s only $14.08/bottle!)
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “Vivid ruby. Expansive, highly perfumed raspberry and floral pastille aromas are complemented by a suggestion of Asian spices. A core of minerality adds definition and spine to juicy red fruit flavors, which show impressive focus and back-end lift. Finishes gently sweet and very long, leaving behind sappy red fruit and rose pastille notes. As always, this wine delivers excellent value.”

Pierre-Marie Chermette Domaine du Vissoux Moulin-a-Vent Les Trois Roches, Beaujolais 2015 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Case-12 Pierre-Marie Chermette Domaine du Vissoux Moulin-a-Vent Les Trois Roches, Beaujolais 2015 750ML ($299.95) $259 special (that’s only $21.58/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Winery note “The three different plots of vines we use for this cuvée, Rochegrès, La Rochelle et Roche Noire, give respectively finesse, power and fruit. The aromatic palate is wide, going from very ripe small red berries through to spice with mineral notes.”

Chateau Grange Cochard Morgon Cote du Puy, Beaujolais 2014 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93 points “Deep ruby. Mineral-accented cherry and blackberry aromas are underscored by a spicy element that gains strength as the wine opens up. Sappy and penetrating, offering sweet dark berry flavors with complicating suggestions of star anise and violet. The spice and floral qualities build steadily through an impressively long, sappy finish, which is framed by harmonious tannins that fold easily into the intense fruit.”

Louis Jadot Domaine des Heritiers Les Bressandes, Beaune Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Winery note “The red wines from the central and southern parts are powerful, tannic, and deeply coloured. Those from the northern area are generally less intensely coloured with softer fruit flavours. Beaune 1er Cru “Bressandes” is situated between “Grèves” and “Cent Vignes”, in the North part. This Premier Cru is an elegant wine, quite full in body with red fruit aromas, spices and vanilla notes. It will perfectly accompany delicate meat dishes as well as most cheeses.”

Louis Jadot Domaine des Heritiers Vignes Franches ‘Clos des Ursules’ Monopole, Beaune Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($79.95) $59 special
Antonio Galloni 92-94 points “The 2012 Beaune Clos des Ursules is the most lifted and refined of the Beaune 1er Crus from Jadot. Sweet raspberries, tobacco, freshly cut flowers, mint and cinnamon meld together gracefully in the glass. The Ursules is distinguished from the other Beaunes by its silky tannins and fabulous length. There is plenty of richness in the glass, but without the excess weight or extraction found in some of the other wines”
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “The 2012 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules is one of their premier holdings with a propensity to age with class. It has a fragrant, more floral bouquet with fine delineation – perhaps more feminine than the other Beaune premier crus. The palate is ripe and generous on the entry. This has good substance and breeding, the quality of the terroir really coming through on the persuasive finish that lingers long in the mouth. This Clos des Ursules is brimming over with confidence and class. Bravo!” WA

Louis Jadot Beaune Premier Cru Anniversary 2012 750ML ($69.95) $48 special
Antonio Galloni 92-94 points “Building off the considerable success of their 2009 Beaune 150th Anniversary 1er Cru, Jadot has decided to make the wine again in top years. One of the highlights in this range, the 2012 boasts stunning power, depth and harmony. The lifted aromatics recall the Ursules, but here the fruit possesses more volume and creaminess. An explosive, layered finish rounds things out in style. Some of the parcels in the blend are Avaux, Cent Vignes, Pertuisots, Vignes Franches, Perrières, Toussaints and Chouacheux.”

Joseph Drouhin Chorey-les-Beaune 2011 375ML ($19.95) $11.90 special
Winery note “A very pleasant wine. Bright, clear red colour. Aromas are surprising in their intensity and fruit. On the palate, a tender, supple, graceful, round body. Very flavourful in the aftertaste, with a hint of blackberry jam. When the wine gets older, wild blackberry is the dominant aroma. After 3 or 5 years, the wine takes on a distinctive smell of truffle and undergrowth evolving towards notes of venison.”

Joseph Drouhin Musigny Grand Cru 2012 750ML ($999.95) $659 special, 1 bottle available
Burghound 96 points “Here the expressive nose is even more complex and spicier than the Amoureuses with its fresh and impressively pure notes of black cherry, plum, violets and cassis that are trimmed by a backdrop of softly toasty oak. There is good power and excellent size, weight and muscle on the big-bodied flavors that exude plenty of mouth coating dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm tannins on the strikingly persistent and almost painfully intense finish. There is a beguiling contrast between the silky mid-palate and the powerful finish that just goes on and on. This should be stunning in time but this is definitely not a wine for early consumption.” BH

Francois Cotat Sancerre Les Caillottes, Loire 2015 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Importer note “‘Caillottes’ means little stones. This vineyard (a more moderate slope of the larger ‘Monts Damnés’ vineyard), with its thin limestone soils, is planted to younger vines. Zesty notes of lime and white pepper; sweet yellow fruit.”

Francois Cotat Sancerre Les Culs de Beaujeu, Loire 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Importer note “A fruitier, more immediately charming wine (soils here are clay-rich) with honeyed notes and plush white fruit, balanced by a tightly wound, citrus core—classic Cotat.”

Francois Cotat Sancerre La Grande Cote, Loire 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special

Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Tuscany 2012 750ML ($34.95) $28 special
Wine Spectator 90 points “Though delicate in profile, there’s no mistaking the cherry, strawberry, earth, leather and tobacco flavors of Sangiovese here. This is firm, with light yet mouthcoating tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2021.” WS
Italy – Puglia

Masseria Li Veli ‘Askos’ Susumaniello Salento IGT, Puglia 2014 750ML ($24.95) $19 special
Wine Advocate 89 points “…The 2014 Susumaniello Askos offers thick lines and plush richness with black cherry and crème de cassis at the forefront. The quality of the fruit is thick and dense, although the results offer more power than they do finesse or nuance. The wine is simple, direct and immediate.”
Germany

Peter Lauer Fass 2 Riesling Extra Trocken 2015 750ML ($31.95) $27 special
Mosel Fine Wines 89-91 points “This cask sample hints at a rich and round feel of greengage, mirabelle, quince and pear on the nose. The wine is gorgeously elegant and precise on the palate, with a ripe and round feel (the wine has actually gone through some malolactic fermentation). The finish is fully dry and outstandingly long and refined. This is a gorgeous wine in the making if it keeps its promises in the bottle.”

Peter Lauer Fass 8 Ayler Kupp Kabinett, Mosel 2015 750ML ($37.95) $29 special
Mosel Fine Wines 91+ points “This offers a delicately ample nose of yellow fruits, ginger and spices. The wine starts off on the round side before fiery acidity brings zest and vibrancy to the finish. This is refreshing, light and elegant and one magically goes for more. The tart side in the finish will disappear with a few years of bottle aging, and it could then easily warrant an even higher rating.”

Peter Lauer Lambertskirch Kabinett, Mosel 2015 750ML ($41.95) $36 special
Mosel Fine Wines 91 points “This offers a gorgeous nose of passion fruit and a hint of coconut and ginger. The wine is delicately creamy and quite richly fruity on the palate and leaves a zesty feel in the long finish. This is nicely made in a delicately creamy expression of racy Kabinett.”

Peter Lauer ‘Neuenbersch- Neuenberg’ Fass 17 Riesling, Mosel 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Mosel Fine Wines 92 points “The 2015er Ayler Kupp Neuenberg Fass 17 is fermented off-dry from parcels in the former single vineyard Neuberg situated just below the Ayler Herrenberger. It offers a gorgeous nose of white and yellow peach, ginger, herbs and spices. The wine is beautifully balanced on the palate, where grip provides great structure and adds to the saline feel in the long finish. This only needs a few years to develop its inner balance and shine.”

Peter Lauer Senior Fass 6 Riesling, Mosel 2015 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Mosel Fine Wines 89+ points “This offers bright and delicately flowery scents of ginger, candied grapefruit peel, Provence herbs and slate. The wine is mineral and delicately fruity on the palate and leaves a clean and linear feel in the still slightly hard finish. This is best left alone for a year to give it time to integrate. 2017-2025.”

Peter Lauer Ayler Kupp Fass 7 Riesling Spatlese, Mosel 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Mosel Fine Wines 93 points “This offers a stunning nose of canned yellow peach, exotic fruits and dollops of herbs and minerals. The wine is gorgeously racy and vibrant on the palate as zesty grapefruit and more minerals come through in the gloriously mouthwatering finish. There is quite some intensity at play here yet this remains superbly playful and animating. What a beauty!”

Peter Lauer ‘Stirn’ Ayler Kupp Fass 15 Riesling, Mosel 2015 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Mosel Fine Wines 93+ points “This offers a pure and gorgeously cool nose of ginger, grapefruit and herbs. The wine starts off on the vibrant and zesty side on the palate, before a touch of smoothness kicks in which cuts right through the crisp finish. The after-taste is seemingly endless as grapefruit and ginger linger on for minutes. Although fermented to off-dry levels, the wine tastes almost dry. This is plain gorgeous and a huge success in an intense yet playful style. We would not be surprised if this proves even better than anticipate at maturity. It is that impressive!”

Peter Lauer Ayler Kupp Unterstenberg Fass 12 Riesling, Mosel 2015 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
Mosel Fine Wines 92 points “This offers ample and inviting scents of kumquat, grapefruit, yellow peach and dried herbs on the nose. The wine is smooth and elegant on the palate, where more minerals blend beautifully well into yellow fruits and herbs. The finish is smooth and intense without ever being over-powering. This hugely gains from airing as it sheds its initial touch of CO2 and gains in complexity and finesse by the day, even after 10 days. This is a little masterpiece of delicately off-dry Riesling, and it is worth waiting for its maturity window.”

Gramona III Lustros Gran Reserva Brut Nature Cava, Catalonia 2007 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2007 Gran Reserva Brut Nature III Lustros is a sparkling wine with a long history, aged for seven years in contact with the lees and kept without adding any liqueur d’expédition (Brut Nature). They like a blend of 75% Xarello and 25% Macabeo, which is a constant across the range, but the long aging provides for the telltale Penedès balsamic aromas of camphor, bay leaf and fennel, with a touch of petrol. The palate shows a compact wine, with very good integration of all the components, bright acidity and fine bubbles that provide a silky texture. It feels younger than it is, a good compromise between youth and development.”

Can Feixes Huguet Seleccio Blanco, Penedes 2015 750ML ($17.95) $14 special
Winery note “A young, dry white wine made from a careful selection of the grape varietals grown in Can Feixes, carefully nurtured to express the primary fruit and floral characters so typical of our grapes. The dedication throughout the years of the Huguet family to our vines has made this wine a true classic that ranks amongst the great white wines of the Penedès.”

Bodegas Roda Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2011 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2011 Roda, a classic blend of Tempranillo with 8% Graciano and a pinch of Garnacha, comes from older vineyards where they search for red fruit character–which might have been more difficult to get in a ripe and warm year like 2011. The profile is closer to the ripeness often displayed by Roda, with more black fruit than other years, coupled with some Mediterranean hints of aromatic herbs. The wine fermented in French oak vats and matured in barrique for 14 months. This is one of the warmest years for Roda, a ripe and heady, hedonistic vintage. What I like about the wine is that it does not display any signs of overripeness, perhaps because of some cooler days in July that slowed things down. The nose is serious and without excess, with the oak also perfectly integrated into the fruit, which is in the foreground. The palate is also terribly balanced, with very fine tannins. This is very pleasant and tasty. This wine has a profile to be a great commercial success.”

Suertes del Marques ‘El Ciruelo’ Listan Negro Vinas Viejas, Valle de la Orotava 2014 750ML ($59.95) $46 special
Wine Advocate 95 points “My favorite wine is always the one produced from a single 0.9-hectare plot of centenary, ungrafted vineyards that are planted with Listán Negro and some 2% Listán Blanco (Palomino); the vines are situated at 480 to 520 meters’ altitude and pruned in the traditional cordón trenzado style with a northwest orientation. They used 100% full clusters that were foot trodden in raw cement vats without temperature control and some 35 days of maceration, and as with all of their wines, with indigenous yeasts. The élevage lasted 14 months and was in neutral 500-liter French oak barrels. The old vines are planted in the middle of the slope on finer soils and always give very balanced wines. The nose is superb, really complex with aromas of freshly cracked peppercorns, violets and lilies, wet stones and that impossible pumice that cries Tenerife. I see more balance in this vintage, with a medium-bodied palate that shows a velvety texture with ultra-fine tannins. This is subtle, elegant, a much more powerful wine than you might think at first sight. However, it has a mysterious and ethereal quality. Elegant, balanced, precise, fresh and complex. This is awesome!”

Olivier Riviere ‘El Cadastro’, Arlanza 2012 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2012 Viñas del Cadastro is a blend of four vineyards in the village of Covarrubias (Burgos), planted with old Tempranillo vines; and as with all old vineyards there are some other varieties interplanted in the field, in this case some 5% Garnacha. 50% of full clusters were used for the vinification in open plastic bins with indigenous yeasts. In 2012, Rivière did a lighter extraction, as the grapes had enough tannins, and what you needed was to get a balanced juice. The different plots were matured in 300- and 600-liter French oak casks separately, then blended after almost two years and kept in vat for five-six months before being bottled. The characteristic of this wine is always a floral, exuberant and expressive nose (a character that Rivière think comes for a plot called La Tizona), but with volume, nice acidity and much finer tannins than in previous vintages, which makes it approachable yet powerful. There are fine spices and something earthy, a little mealy and malty, really showy and expressive. This is an elegant, really impressive Arlanza, drinkable now and with the stuffing, balance and acidity to develop nicely in bottle. This is the finest and better balanced Viñas del Cadastro so far. This is an incredible value for money.”

Marques de Vargas Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2009 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special
Case-12 Marques de Vargas Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2009 750ML ($299.95) $236 special (that’s only $19.67/bottle!)
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “(75% tempranillo, 10% mazuelo, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 5% garnacha): Saturated ruby. Assertive aromas of raspberry, rose oil and oak spice show very good intensity and focus. Smooth, sweet and spicy, with ripe red and dark berry flavors, a subtle vanilla nuance and strong back-end lift. Sweet and energetic on the long, floral finish, which shows no rough edges. This is pretty delicious and looks just about ready to go.”

Familia Nin-Ortiz ‘Nit de Nin’, Priorat DOCa 2013 750ML ($119.95) $99 special
Wine Advocate 96+ points “The 2013 Nit de Nin matured in 3,200-liter oak foudres for some 16 months, and wants to be an old-style blend of grapes from slope vineyards showcasing the typicity of Priorat. The full clusters from ancient vineyards fermented with indigenous yeasts and produced some 4,000 bottles that were filled in March 2015. I previously had the opportunity of tasting the wine just after being bottled and was somehow reduced and dizzy. Now it’s a completely different story. The 16 months in bottle have polished the wine and the reductive character is completely gone. However, everything is subtler, it’s not as explosive as when it is really young and shows its exuberance, there is a calmed beauty. The palate is always very refined with fantastic freshness and subtle minerality, pure and fresh, even if it’s also very powerful.”

Familia Nin-Ortiz ‘Nit de Nin’, Priorat DOCa 2012 1.5L ($199.95) $169 special
Wine Advocate 97 points “If the Planetes was impressive, wait for the 2012 Nit de Nin, which is a similar wine but at two levels of intensity, depth and elegance above. It’s also a single-vineyard wine from a very old plot in Porrera in the Mas d’en Caçador vineyard at some 500 meters altitude on an impressive slope planted with very old vines on slate soils. It’s approximately 60% Garnacha Peluda (which is a different strain producing lighter-colored wines with higher acidity than the regular Garnacha) and the rest Cariñena. The wine is pure, perfumed, intoxicating even, floral and spicy, intense and captivating. The palate is highly refined, with pure flavors, great freshness, completely focused, nothing blurry at all in there, generous but fine at the same time. It ends very tasty, with a saline minerality. I had the chance to visit the vineyard on my last night in Priorat, and when you see it you understand that it HAS to produce great wine. Simply superb. Drink or keep. 4,000 bottles were filled in March 2014.”

Staff Picks

Bodega Tapiz ‘Zolo’ Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Uco Valley 2013 750ML ($21.95) $16 special, 36+ bottles available
Here’s a wine for a chilly evening, a Wednesday dinner, or a Saturday night party. Wines from Argentina provide warmth, rich fruit, and satisfaction, at a fraction of what you’d pay for a domestic or European bottle. Have a glass of Bodega Tapiz Zolo Reserve alongside a steak, gaucho style, or polish off a bottle with a burger and a movie. Cabernet like this deserves a space in every kitchen. – Daniel
James Suckling93 points “Dried blackberry and blueberry character on the nose with hints of spice. Full body, dense and powerful fruit and tannins, yet remains firm and fresh. Chewy and structured.”

Domaine Les Pallieres Gigondas Terrasses du Diable, Rhone, 2011 750ML ($49.95) $33 special, 30 bottles available
Gigondas always represents some of the best value in the Southern Rhone, especially when compared to Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  Like its more famous cousin, the Les Pallieres Terrasses du Diable (from the brothers behind Vieux Telegraphe) displays all the richness and density you would want, coupled with a savoriness that only bottle age can bring.  A real treat at any price and a steal at ours. –Saul
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93 points “Vivid ruby. Heady scents of candied cherry, raspberry preserves, anise and potpourri. Shows a darker profile in the mouth, offering palate-staining blackberry and bitter cherry flavors and a strong floral quality. Picks up smokiness with air and finishes with superb focus and length and youthful tannic grip. No question that this is one of the best wines I tasted from Gigondas this year.” JR

Killer Keller

The German Elite

The wines of Keller are as smart a choice as any – nigh, smarter – for someone who needs convincing that German wines are among the most exciting wines in the world. Thankfully, we’ve moved past the days of bulk wine and Blue Nun; the drinking public is largely aware that German wine isn’t always sweet and, still, it’s delicious when it is. With palates primed, we’re finally deserving of what Keller has to offer.

Winemaker Klaus Peter and his wife Julia occupy a number of great vineyards within the Rheinhessen and headquartered in Flörsheim-Dalsheim. Peter deftly maneuvers between allowing the wines to speak clearly and transparently and ensuring that the winemaking process allows that. In other words, he doesn’t look to get in the way while still being hands-on.

The Peters and their team have studied their vineyards to the extent of drilling between 50,000-75,000 holes in order to better understand soil composition. Harvest is done by hand, and extremely selectively. Only native yeasts partake in fermentation, with a mixture of stainless steel and oak barrels used. The resultant wines are uncompromising in quality, with a seemingly infinite lifespan.

We’re proud to carry nine different wines from Keller available here now, including the newly arrived 2015s:

Weingut Keller Dalsheimer Hubacker Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Rheinhessen 2015 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 3 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94-95 points “Citrus-colored, the 2015 Dalsheim Hubacker Riesling Trocken GG has a really ripe, intense, yet elegant and almost tropical-flavored bouquet. It does not lack the precision and chalky lemon flavor of the “Hubi” limestone rock terroir. Powerful, dense and complex on the palate, this has the grip and mineral tension of a great wine. This is probably the most vital and concentrated “Hubi” I have tasted so far. It is enormously salty and tension-filled, but at the same time very fine and as fruit-drive as it is chalk-driven. The finish is tight, long, pure and powerful, and its endless salinity, piquancy and tension make it incredibly stimulating. This is a great dry German Riesling or, as Keller puts it: “This is how Hubacker should taste.””

Weingut Keller Westhofener Kirchspiel Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Rheinhessen 2015 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 9 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93-94 points “From 51-year-old vines on very barren rocks, Keller’s 2015 Westhofen Kirchspiel Riesling Trocken GG is clear, intense and precise on the nose. It is very ripe and concentrated, provided with refreshingly chalky lemon and even discreet mocha/nougat flavors. Great purity and vitality on the palate, but it also has lots of power! Its power is very well captured by the concentration of everything: fruit, minerals and acidity. The 2015 Kirchspiel is full of terroir and vintage expression, a dense and round, yet tension-filled and vitalizing Riesling. This wine has a very linear and straight-forward character, with an enormous complexity and power, as well as finesse, grip and minerality. Keller’s Kirchspiel was picked in two passes: one earlier and one later. “It was important to keep the grapes shadowed and to not pick too early,” says Keller, who was still full of fear in August, due to the drought and heat. But he is pretty happy with the result, today.”

Lingers with strong, mineral-driven authority, leaving a suave touch of honeysuckle behind.”

Their Coteaux du Languedoc Rosé combines elegance and power: a lively wine with excellent presence on the palate with a properly dry and mineral finish. There is plenty of fruit and the bright rose color is a worthy subject for a fine still-life. A blend of the five classic grape varieties of the Languedoc: Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre & Carignan with the first two comprising the majority of the finished wine.”

Mas Jullien Coteaux du Languedoc Rose 2015 750ML ($27.95) Was $24, Now $18, 3 bottles available

Made from a classic mix of local grapes, including Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan. Much like the formidable Rosés of Pradeaux and Simone, this effort from Mas Jullien will stand the test of time.”

Bisson Ciliegiolo Rose Golfo del Tigullio, Liguria 2015 750ML ($24.95) Was $18, Now $14, 1 bottle available
Importer note “When is a rosé not a rosé? We have struggled with whether to officially classify the Ciliegiolo varietal in this category or whether to present it as a light-colored red wine with lots and lots of character (much as we do, for example, the Poulsard from the Jura). No matter what moniker we use, the fact is that this wine is a joyous presence at the table with its bountiful berry flavor, brilliant rose-ruby color and energetic freshness. From the Italian riviera via the talented Piero Lugano.”

Wine Advocate 88 points “The rosé from Muga called simply 2014 Rosado is a classical “clarete” from the Rioja Alta, produced with Garnacha and Viura and in 2014, exceptionally, a pinch of Mazuelo (Cariñena) all harvested at the same time. The full clusters are pressed directly and the different musts are blended and then put to ferment in well-seasoned oak vats where it matures in contact with the lees for some four months. It’s a pale, salmon-colored wine with a clean, focused nose and a light palate, that is pleasant, fresh and easy to drink. Bring out those lamb chops!” WA

Byron Nielson Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir, California 2013 750ML ($39.95) $29 special, 20 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92+ points “Another terrific wine is the 2013 Pinot Noir Nielson Vineyard, which was completely destemmed and aged 16 months in 40% new French oak. Still showing its oak elevage, with lots of caramelized cherry, black raspberry, sweet oak and spice, it hits the palate with a seamless, silky, gorgeously pure texture that carries plenty of fruit and finishes clean and dry, with notable tannic grip. Give it a year or two in the cellar to integrate its oak and drink bottles through 2021.”

Case-6 Chateau du Fort Pontus, Fronsac 2010 750ML ($149.95) $99 special, 5 six-packs available (that’s only $16.50/bottle!)
Chateau du Fort Pontus, Fronsac 2010 750ML ($24.95) $18 special, 36+ bottles available
Winery note “100% Merlot. Tasting Notes : Intense first nose, opening up to reveal subtle spicy aromas when swirled in the glass. Opens with a hint of sweetness, which soon gives way to a smooth, warm mid-palate capped with the crisp, tannic finish so typical of Fronsac. Once home to French artist René Princeteau, tutor to the no less celebrated Henri de Toulouse–Lautrec, the imposing Château du Fort Pontus stands proudly overlooking the Fronsac appellation. For many centuries the exceptional terroir of this appellation made Fronsac the wine of kings and the king of wines. The Pradel de Lavaux family has maintained this tradition of excellence, crafting a wine of superior pedigree which strikes a delicate balance between elegance and vivacity. Dominated by red fruit aromas and delicate spicy notes, evolving and maturing with time to reveal the noble character of this fine terroir.”

Case-6 Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Vinothek Riesling, Wachau, Austria 1997 750ML ($1199.95) $999 special, 2 six-packs available (that’s only $166.50/bottle!)
Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Vinothek Riesling, Wachau, Austria 1997 750ML ($219.95) $179 special, 9 bottles available
Wine Advocate 97 points “Aged for 17 years in a domestic 3,500-liter cask before it was bottled in August 2014, the 1997 Riesling Vinothek is the best part of the regular 1997 Riesling Smaragd Im Weingebirge, which was bottled and marketed in late 1998. The aged Vinothek version offers a fascinatingly clear, bright, deep and multi-layered nose with iodine and ripe as well as intense white-fleshed fruit aromas. Full-bodied, full of finesse and elegant, this dry, transparent and mineral Riesling develops a great intensity, complexity and power on the palate, but never leaves its silky road of purity, finesse and transparency. There is a lot of Spiel and tension here, but the most exciting characteristic trait is the intense and very mineral, almost endless finish. How youthful this wine is! And its further aging potential is still terrific. The wine reminds me of certain sherries, white Riojas and Jura wines, although it is not less oxidative. But it spent a long time in cask and has the freshness, complexity and thrilling taste of those. It’s a great, unique and stimulating wine that was bottled with 12.8% of alcohol, 6 grams of residual sugar and 6.5 grams of acidity.”

Nicolas Joly

Sublime Loire

Arriving Friday

Both Louis XI and XIV recognized the sublimity of La Coulée de Serrant, as did the monks who first planted the vineyard almost a millennium ago. The wines from this 17-acre plot display an individuality that long ago warranted a 17-acre appellation controlée, like Burgundy in the Loire. Put this property, and the other Savennières vineyards Les Vieux Clos and Clos de la Bergerie, into the care of the Joly family and you have fabulous wine like no other. Nicolas Joly is considered the high priest of biodynamic winegrowing and winemaking in France, and he has managed his estate according to this uber-organic system since 1984. His are happy, healthy vines. Tasting a Clos de la Coulée de Serrant wine remains a priviledge: history combines with progressive farming in a most beautiful expression of the Chenin Blanc grape, just as nature and mankind intended.

Roberto Voerzio

Elevated Barolo

Recently Reviewed & Arriving December 16th

Roberto Voerzio Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2004 1.5L ($699.95) $538 pre-arrival special, 6 magnums available
Antonio Galloni 98 points (in 2015!!!) “Voerzio no longer makes his Barolo Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate. The 2004 is a great reminder of just how fabulous this wine was. A huge, vertical wine, the 2004 boasts magnificent depth and overall intensity. The flavors are boldly sketched in a dramatic Barolo built on pure muscle. A host of black cherry, cloves, smoke, menthol, tar and blackberry jam flow through to the intense finish. Beguiling and powerful, the 2004 will provide fascinating drinking for the next 10-15 years, perhaps longer. Of all the 2004s here, this is the wine that has had the most positive evolution in bottle.”
