Terre Nere
Sicily’s Mount Etna is a cherished place. Home to the Burgundy-esque varieties of Nerello Mascalese (red) and Carricante (white), these are gorgeous, terroir-driven wines deeply marked by their volcanic home soils. The two grapes offer layers of spice and high acidity, partly due to being grown on the highest vineyards in all of Europe. One of the finest producers on this volcano is Terre Nere, a domain that offers multiple single-vineyard wines. The whites are based on Carricante, a grape that gives mineral, piercing wines akin to Chablis. The wines of Terre Nere are an astonishing value considering their quality and terroir. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Norm Roby-Wine Review Online 93 points “Roussanne is a challenge to grow, and this winery made a few viticultural changes in its estate vineyard to address those challenges. In 2024 those changes paid off and resulted in a vibrant, textured wine. Harvested in mid-October at a relatively low Brix of 22.8, this Roussanne was barrel fermented and aged for 5 months in neutral French oak. Straw colored, it offers an attractive aroma of white peach with hints of ginger and jasmine for added intrigue. Medium-bodied and smooth in texture, the wine remains vibrant with rich flavors of peach and some honeyed notes. The finish is long and lively with some ginger spice showing up in the aftertaste.”

But in 2020, production doubled to all of 50 cases. This 100% Tempranillo was aged for 23 months in a combination of French and American oak (27% new). It makes a strong case for unblended Tempranillo. A bouquet of raspberry, cloves and forest floor quickly emerges in the glass. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine shows good concentration and notes of berry, baking spices, and a hint of black olive in the layered flavors. The flavors expand and continue in the finish to reveal some light, well-integrated tannins. It culminates with just a little tannic edge and grip. It has a long life ahead of it.”
