Latour’s Entry Level Pauillac
Chateau Latour is one of the great names in wine—a Bordeaux house that needs no introduction or explanation. While many focus on their Grand Vin, they also offer two other bottlings from their property in—the least expensive of which is simply labeled as “Pauillac.” We’ve got the classically-styled ’13 and ’14 in stock now at new lower prices—the best in the country by a mile. If you’re looking for a taste of Latour magic without the usual Latour pricing, these are your answers.

Cliff Lede Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 750ML ($89.95) Was $69, Now $59 Subscriber Special
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “With small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, this is a classically structured, earthy and impressive wine. Char, herb and earth accents frame the elegant, crisp fruit and graceful tannins, with a lasting taste of crushed rock.”
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District) shows off the more extroverted side of the year to great effect. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, leather, lavender, spice, menthol and cloves are all amped up. The 2017 is a rich, explosive wine built on flamboyance and volume. This large-scaled, potent Cabernet Sauvignon has a ton to offer. Best of all, with a case production of over 5,500, it will be relatively easy to find, and is just as nearly as exceptional as the flagship bottlings in this range. In a word: superb.”

Hundred Acre ‘Wraith’ Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($599.95) Displayed price $549, Subscriber price $479
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 100 points “Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Wraith leaps from the glass with gregarious black and red cherries, mulberries, black currant cordial, red roses and lavender scents with layers of crushed rocks and earthy sparks. Faint earth and exotic spice nuances unfurl slowly, growing in intensity and depth. The palate is full-bodied and solidly structured with firm, very finely grained, super ripe tannins and bold freshness. Finishing exquisitely perfumed, jaw-droppingly layered and with bags of sophistication and poise, this wine totally resets the benchmark for 100 points.”

Cliff Lede Vineyards Poetry Cabernet Sauvignon, Stags Leap District 2016 750ML ($299.95) Was $249, Now $219 Subscriber Special
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 99+ points “A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry needs a little coaxing to begin to unfurl the tightly wound yet exciting scents of blackcurrant cordial, blackberry preserves, warm redcurrants and kirsch plus fragrant nuances of candied violets, underbrush, cigar boxes, menthol and star anise. Full-bodied and built like a brick house in the mouth, the palate features an almost impenetrable structure of super ripe tannins framing the taut, muscular fruit, finishing long. This beauty needs at least 5-6 years to begin to blossom, after which it may well warrant a perfect score.”
Jeb Dunnuck 99 points “Similarly colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry comes from shallow, volcanic soils in the Stags Leap AVA and is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. It offers killer notes of crème de cassis, black raspberries, toasted spices, vanilla, and exotic flowers. These carry to a profound, incredibly intense, layered wine that has no hard edges, perfect balance, building tannins, and a great, great finish. This is another magical wine from this team that ranks with some of the finest wines ever made from this valley. As with most 2016s, it has some upfront charm and accessibility, yet will be at its best with 4-6 years of bottle age and will keep for 3-4 decades.”

Case-3 Eisele Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley 2018 750ML ($349.95) Displayed price $285, Subscriber price $255 (that’s only $85/bottle!)
James Suckling 97 points “Sliced apples and limes on the nose with grassy and chamomile notes. But then it turns to honeysuckle, chalk and minerals. Full-bodied with papaya, sliced-pear and green-pineapple flavors. Tight and fresh at the end. Crunchy acidity. Solid density. Energetic finish. Drink now or hold.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 94+ points “Already bottled, the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc bursts from the glass with energetic notes of fresh grapefruit, lime leaves, green apples and orange blossoms with wafts of dill seed and white pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate is practically electric with vibrant citrus and apple flavors and a wonderfully spicy background, finishing fantastically long, minerally and refreshing.”

Wine Spectator Praises ’15 Produttori Riservas
“The Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative, founded in 1958, produces some of the top Barbarescos in the region, made in a traditional style… [A] factor in Produttori del Barbaresco’s success is its focus on Nebbiolo. The best grapes go into the single-vineyard riservas, only in top vintages. Nebbiolo grapes that don’t make the cut for the crus go into the Barbaresco, an excellent wine on its own, or may be declassified into the Nebbiolo Langhe.
“The nine vineyards all lie within the Barbaresco commune. The Produttori’s 64 farmer members are paid based on quality… ‘Every little effort to improve quality is rewarded,’ explains Vacca.
“The 2015 harvest delivered quality and distinctive characters from each vineyard.… The wines need three to five years to really hit their stride, but they have the tannins to age two decades or longer…There is indeed ample fruit, rich and dark, but there is also freshness, purity and mouthfilling fleshiness. ‘[2015 is] part of a line of fine vintages we have had from 2013 to 2017,’ Vacca adds. ‘For me it’s a cross between 2009 and 2011, but maybe not as rich as 2011.'”…
“The consistency of wines from the Produttori, combined with their traditional style (including three years of aging in 2,500- 3,500- and 5,000-liter casks) and release only in the best vintages, bestows both quality and longevity. They are among the best wines made in the entire Barbaresco zone. The prices for the single-vineyard riservas have increased 20 percent since the 2011s were released, however, at $71 they are still relatively good values for Barbaresco or Barolo of this quality.
“If you aren’t familiar with the wines, the 2015 vintage is a good starting point, with its effusive fruit and rich textures. But don’t be fooled—there are enough tannins for these to age two decades or longer. – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator
Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2015 750ML ($89.95) $62.50 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 96 points “An opulent and complex version, boasting cherry, strawberry, cut hay, iron and tobacco aromas and flavors. Firms up nicely on the finish, with terrific balance and length. Shows both a fruity and a savory side, with fine potential to age. Best from 2023 through 2045. —B.S.”
Produttori del Barbaresco Montefico Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2015 750ML ($99.95) $59 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “Savory notes of salty licorice and eucalyptus combine with cherry, plum and tar flavors in this beefy red, which is broad, maintaining a sense of freshness, with ripe tannins that are well-integrated and balanced. The savory note echoes on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2045. —B.S.”
Produttori del Barbaresco Pora Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2015 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 34 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “A mix of black cherry, mint, eucalyptus and tar flavors highlight this firmly structured Barbaresco, which nonetheless remains fresh and focused, with a line of dense tannins lifting the long finish. Best from 2023 through 2043. —B.S.”
Produttori del Barbaresco ‘Muncagota’ Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2015 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 93 points “On the lean side for 2015, with wild herb accents to the core of cherry and plum flavors, this is fluid and bright, with a line of tannins building on the finish. This expands nicely, filling out and lingering. Best from 2023 through 2038. —B.S.”
Produttori del Barbaresco ‘Paje’ Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2015 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 93 points “A beam of fresh cherry and plum plays out over a line of earth, tar and licorice in this round and open red, with well-integrated tannins for support. Shows excellent balance and length and should be approachable soon. Best from 2023 through 2040. —B.S.”

A Steal on Day Wines’ Flagship Pinot
Save Over $20 per Bottle!
Brianne Day is one of the Oregon wine industry’s rising stars, building a reputation that lead to a recent James Beard nomination. Sourcing fruit from throughout the Pacific Northwest, she crafts some of the region’s most distinctive and exciting wines. Today we’re thrilled to offer an incredible deal on Day’s 2016 Momtazi Vineyard Pinot Noir. At $21 off the winery’s price per bottle (and over $25 off by the case!), this is an opportunity we had to pass along.
Day describes their Momtazi bottling as their “our flagship Pinot Noir from one of Willamette Valley’s most prized biodynamic vineyards and our most age-worthy wine.” It‘s normally the most expensive Pinot in the Day Wines lineup at $54, but we’re able to offer it for just $33 per bottle and $28.75 per bottle on case purchases.
For those unfamiliar with Momtazi Vineyard, it is one of the Willamette Valley’s most prized biodynamic vineyards. This reputation owes to the fact that no chemicals have been used on the property since it was planted to vine in 1997. And today, the Momtazi family uses strict biodynamic practices. This is a vineyard that many of the state’s most celebrated wineries source from and display the vineyard name proudly on their label.
So take advantage of this killer deal and see what one of Oregon’s up and coming winemakers can do with some of Oregon’s most cherished fruit.

John Gilman 93 points “The 2016 Momtazi Vineyard bottling of Pinot Noir from Day Wines is the ripest of these 2016s, as it comes in at fourteen percent octane. It is beautifully black fruity on the nose (as all the examples from Momtazi have been that I have been fortunate enough to taste), offering up scents of black plum, sweet dark berry, black tea, balsam bough, a beautiful base of soil tones, chicory, gentle spice tones and a bit of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and beautifully balanced, with a fine core of fruit, great mineral drive and grip, ripe, well-integrated tannins and a long, tangy and promising finish. While this is the ripest of the 2016 pinots from Brianne Day, it is no less pure or precise and is a great bottle in the making. 2024-2055.”
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 92 points “Limpid red. A highly aromatic bouquet evokes fresh dark berries and baking spices, along with smoky mineral and musky earth overtones. Juicy and broad on the palate, offering alluringly sweet black raspberry, cherry, rose pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen steadily with air. Delivers a suave blend of power and energy and finishes with finely woven tannins and strong, floral-driven persistence.”
Winery Note “Momtazi Vineyard is a certified biodynamic site nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Range, composed primarily of uplifted marine sedimentary loams and silts with alluvial overlays and an underlying base of basalt. One of the revered vineyards in Willamette, this is our cornerstone source for Pinot noir. We are always thrilled to work with this fruit, as it’s some of the most coveted in in the Valley. Many people wish they could get their hands on it, and we’re fortunate that we do. Easily our most intense and deeply fruited Pinot noir, the wine displays hallmark Momtazi notes of black cherry and black raspberry, both on the nose and on the palate. Additional notes of sandalwood spice and forest floor emerge with air, giving a glimpse at the complexity to come. It’s a moody, broody teenager at present, which is no surprise given the vineyard’s reputation for structure. The tannins are suave but sturdy, and the well-integrated acidity holds everything together seamlessly in an enchanting marriage of power and finesse. As flagship wines go, the 2016 Momtazi is a worthy standard-bearer.”

Don’t Miss Our Raul Perez Sale
Even Better Prices on the Spanish Icon
Andy:
There are some producers that are more fun to write about than others, and Raul Perez is one of the best. While astonishingly humble, he has had heaps of praise dumped on him for more than 20 years and the descriptions of his talent are always on point. He has been called “the archetype of the intuitive winemaking genius” and mentioned as possibly the best winemaker in the world in the same breath by Decanter Magazine’s Pedro Ballesteros MW. What is it that makes his wine so special, and why should we all be laying these down and enjoying them over the next decade.
Bierzo is where Raul Perez runs wild, finding his favorite pocket vineyards in the mountainous region while terrorizing any unfortunate souls that might be on the road while he’s on the move. The old vine plantings Mencia and Trousseau (among a handful of other old-school varietals) draw so much character from each site; elevation, exposure, soil, that Raul is committed to whole clusters going into fermenters so as not to lose any of the untamed aromatics and microbiotic variables that shape the wines. This is why he turns away the praise that is pushed upon him as the “world’s best winemaker” giving the fruit all of the credit.
In their youth the wines are not shy, and as a result it can be difficult to separate the individual qualities of each wine. Each site will in time reveal its true colors; schist vs. sand, warm and lush vs. windy and restrained. While there are a good number of affordable Mencia wines available that can be treated as pop and pour, the Raul Perez wines should be treated as cellar selections that will reward a little patience. Consider the wines as you would a love child between Volnay and Chateauneuf du Pape, and trust that sitting these down for five to ten years will only make the wines shine.
We’ve acquired a large selection of the wines Perez makes under his own name as well as those off of the La Vizcaina property (which are all single vineyards from a single estate). We’re dropping the prices on a bunch of his great bottles—but only for the next few days. You can shop all the sale selections on our webstore, or see the discounted bottles below.

Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96 points “One of the few vineyards in Bierzo where the soils have a significant content of limestone is San Juan de Paluezas, in a different valley looking into Las Médulas goldmines. They produce three barrels of the 2016 Ultreia de Paluezas from this vineyard. This year it had a shorter élevage, only around 12 months, as they saw it was ready and was racked out of the wood. Limestone soils always deliver dry, chalk-like tannins and a special tastiness that often translates in an almost salty feeling. It has more bones than flesh; it’s austere and should develop slowly in bottle. In fact, they are now releasing the 2015, as they feel it benefits from some more time in bottle. I like the austerity here. 850 bottles produced from a small plot with very low yields.”
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96 points “One of the few vineyards in Bierzo where the soils have a significant content of limestone is San Juan de Paluezas, in a different valley looking into Las Médulas goldmines. Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2014 Ultreia de Valtuille was very open and expressive, impressive too, with notes of freshness, blood orange, red cherries and also flowers (violets, lilies) and an earthy touch. It’s elegant and complex, with very fine tannins and a velvety sensation. As with all the reds, the oak is unnoticeable, perfectly integrated and folded into the wine.”

Josh Raynolds 95 points “Vivid ruby. An expansive, seductively perfumed bouquet of ripe red/blue fruits, pot-pourri, exotic spices and cola, along with an intense mineral overtone. Concentrated yet vibrant in character, showing superb definition and mineral lift to the sweet raspberry, boysenberry, cola, spicecake and violet pastille flavors. Shows alluring sweetness and powerful thrust on the youthfully tannic finish, which hangs on with outstanding clarity and mineral-driven persistence. (All whole clusters and neutral French oak.) “

Raul Perez Ultreia de Valtuille Bierzo 2016 750ML ($79.95) Was $69, Now $59 Subscriber Special
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96+ points “There are only 1,000 bottles of the 2016 Ultreia Valtuille (the new name, as all labels have been simplified and cleaned up, and some of the names have even been shortened). The crop was greatly reduced because of mildew, and the grapes are a lot more concentrated, with more tannin and structure, and they had to do a much longer élevage, up to 24 months in barrique. Despite its concentration and power, it has great freshness and perfume. You don’t find excess tannin, and it seems like the time in barrel has really polished the edges. It’s really outstanding.”

Raul Perez Ultreia El Rapolao Bierzo 2014 750ML ($69.95) Was $66, Now $59 Subscriber Special
Wine Advocate 95+ points “There is a new Ultreia bottling, the 2014 Ultreia El Rapolao, from a vineyard that now sees five or six different bottlings, sourced from their old vineyards that used to go to the Vizcaína bottling. This is really pretty, with intense floral aromas, spices, a touch of earth and something herbal. The palate is medium-bodied with refined tannins, great balance and a tasty, long, sapid, almost salty finish. There were some 600 bottles produced. it was bottled in January 2017. Outstanding.”

Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2016 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas comes from a plot with deeper soils, and the wine feels quite immediate and fruit driven. There is a bitter touch in the palate. I’ve seen some ups and downs with this wine, and Raúl Pérez confirmed that the wines are variable, but they tend to deliver in the medium term. It’s not particularly complex, but it drinks well. 4,500 bottles produced.”

An Under-$15 Red to Write Home About
Andy:
When the family from La Fortuna arrived to taste with us back in January, I was excited to revisit their wines as I had not tasted them in a couple of vintages. Such a great surprise when Gino kicked off the tasting with a $14 red that I couldn’t wait to share with the Brunello fans that are always looking for something affordable to drink while they’re waiting for the Riservas to come around. The Fortunello Toscano Rosso is from some of the younger vines from around the property and showcases the youthfulness of the fruit in the best way possible. Bright cherry and raspberry fruits, but telltale cocoa dust and blueberry in the up-front attack on the palate. The finish is to the point, hanging around only long enough to let you know that the wine has the pedigreed family to look forward to meeting. The wine is light, fresh and easy on the alcohol making it an easy choice to open on any casual night with family. Pizza night wine extraordinaire, but will shine with meals with a little more substance as well. We’ve had comparably priced wines in the Italian section that I have recommended, but the overall polish of this wine leaves me wondering how they can make something this pleasant for so inexpensive. Enjoy any time over the next couple of years, but drink it while you can still get more.
La Fortuna Fortunello Rosso Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2017 750ML ($17.95) $14 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
VinopolNote: A fantastic value, showing pretty varietal notes of red cherries and spice. Moderately rich, savory and expressive.
Winery Note “A wine that first expresses itself through its colour; intense ruby red. Extraordinary via its intensity and absolute pleasure on the palate, vigor, length, freshness and fruity finish. A wine that will improve with age with its scents of raspberry and red berries.”

Wine Advocate 96 points “Eighteen months in new French oak barrels has given the 2015 Côtes du Roussillon Villages le Clos des Fées a certain tightness and discipline lacking in the Vieilles Vignes bottling. There’s still massive fruit and buried complexity, full body and rich tannins, but there’s also firmness of structure that shows the serious, age-worthy side of Bizeul’s winemaking. Vanilla and baking spices accent deep, dark cherries and plums, ending in a long, velvety finish.”

Fat, sweet and deep, with good spicy lift to the very ripe flavors of plum, blueberry, dark chocolate and spices. A very rich, tactile Syrah with sexy sweetness but plenty of ripe, dusty tannins to support a graceful evolution in bottle. Ultimately richer than the Union Gap Syrah but also more tannic.”

Bruna Grimaldi Badarina, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93+ points “($90) This wine has already evolved to show some tar and savory aromas. The 2015 Barolo Badarina offers pretty color saturation with linear and fresh lines of plum, black fruit, dark spice and tilled earth. The wine delivers much of the heft and power promised by this Badarina cru in Serralunga d’Alba. If you’re looking for a Barolo vintage to pair with a rich meat like liver or game, this could be the one. This is Bruna Grimaldi’s flagship Barolo, as her mother was born in Badarina and this site has always had special meaning to her family. Some 8,000 bottles were produced.”

Felsina Berardenga Fontalloro Toscana IGT 2017 750ML ($69.95) $54.50 special, 26 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 93 points “The flavors of cherry, strawberry and rose are pure, with a backbone of acidity and dense tannins for support. Iron and wild herb accents add depth as this red lingers, showing smoke and spice notes. Features a sense of urgency, driven by vivid acidity. The finish evokes energy. Best from 2022 through 2038.”
And now for something completely different…
Klein Constantia Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine 2007 500ML ($119.95) $99 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin – Vinous 94 points “The 2007 Vin de Constance has a comparatively higher level of residual sugar at 177g/L and the highest total acidity at 8.3g/L. It is a burnished amber color and presents an intriguing, complex bouquet of burnt honey, syrup, figs and subtle earthy/peaty tones that become more prominent with aeration. The palate is as fresh as a daisy, delivering superb acidity and impressive weight. Tangy marmalade and quince notes enliven the entry, and the midpalate is very cohesive, although it tapers in a little toward the finish when you would expect it to fan out. Nevertheless, this is an excellent, characterful Vin de Constance.”

Col d’Orcia’s Outstanding 2015 Brunello
Plus, More Highlights From a Dream Brunello Vintage
“This is a standout group of new releases from Montalcino. What impresses most about 2015 is the consistently high quality delivered across the board. As a whole, the wines are homogenous and uniform in terms of their intensity, depth and generosity. House styles may differ from producer to producer, but these wines are united by the energy, exuberance and radiance that come naturally to a beautifully warm and sunny vintage like 2015. That distinctive vintage signature is applied evenly across the board, leaving no wine untouched by its magic.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
You can tell a lot about a Brunello vintage by how early we start getting asked about it. In the case of the 2015s, well, let’s just say this is a pretty anticipated set of wines. ’15 was a warm year across Europe and the vintage produced Brunello di Montalcino of exceptional concentration. Even for a region known for richer wines, these are powerful—yet they maintain an expressiveness that’s delightfully fresh to go along with their intensity.
The critics have been raving about it as well, with Eric Guido at Vinous saying that “It’s a vintage of power and purity, the result of a long growing season with no extreme events” before citing Andrea Mantengoli, who called it “A vintage made by God.”
Monica Larner, writing for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, exclaimed “Ask anyone who farmed Sangiovese that year. They will tell you: Fruit has never been more beautiful than it was in the picture-perfect 2015 vintage.” She called the wines “a standout group of new releases from Montalcino” with “consistently high quality delivered across the board.”
In short, this is a vintage to buy broadly and deeply. Not since 2010 have we seen this sort of widespread praise and we all wish we have more 2010 Brunello in our cellars. We’ve got some of the highlights of our 2015 Brunello selection below, but we’ve got new wines added to our webstore every week and you can see all the Brunello options there.

Tenuta Col d’Orcia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Eric Guido – Vinous 94 points “At first, the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is quite closed in the glass, to the point I move on to the wine next to it… However, upon returning to the glass a few minutes later, I come to realize that the 2015 simply needs time to come to life; and once it does, watch out. Here I find a gorgeous and intense display, mixing savory and sweet, as well as, earth and fruit, as dusty cedar and spice give way to ripe strawberry with a hint of citrus, with wild herbs and a hint of animal musk adding further depths. On the palate, silky textures meld into woodland red berry fruits, zesty spice, hints of cedar, savory herbs, saline minerals, and mounting tannins. The finish is long and structured, yet there remains enough primary fruit to balance it all out, as well as resonating acids, intriguing hints of citrus, and spice. This is remarkably balanced, singing already, yet it’s full of potential for the cellar.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “This combines the best characteristics of Sangiovese, with cherry and strawberry fruit, earth, leather and iron notes and balsamic elements of wild thyme, rosemary and Mediterranean scrub. Shows a bit of heat on the finish, yet remains fresh and long. Best from 2023 through 2042. 16,600 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. — BS”
Wine Advocate 93 points “The Col d’Orcia 2015 Brunello di Montalcino (made with organic fruit) has a very distinctive aromatic profile with subtle hints of rusty iron and moist potting soil. However, this wine also shows an impressive evolution in the glass with those earthy and sanguine notes lifting to reveal sweet oak tones of vanilla and baking spice that remain pronounced in a second underlayer. To me, Col d’Orcia’s wines are almost always characterized by a medicinal or balsamic element, and the primary fruit is downplayed as a result. This vintage puts on a good show with wild berry, blackcurrant and dried blackberry. That said, this wine is more ethereal and spicy than it is fruity per se.”

Kerin O’Keefe-Wine Enthusiast 98 points “Cellar Selection. Intense aromas of berry, iris, underbrush, botanical herb and camphor shape the enticing nose. Firmly structured, the taut, full-bodied palate offers juicy black cherry, raspberry, licorice and tobacco set against tightly knit, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2025–2035.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points “The Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso is distinguished by a unique aromatic profile that brings out mineral notes of crushed limestone or chalk. This adds a greater sense of focus and delineation that not only characterizes the bouquet but also applies to the way the wine hits the palate in a fuller and more determined way (compared to the slightly softer classic Brunello). Instead, this single-vineyard Brunello shows an upright and direct approach with soft salinity on the close followed by forest fruit, spice and medicinal herb. Then enticingly fresh and well-balanced, with captivating violet inner-mouth perfume to the steely red and black fruit flavors that linger impressively. The delicately peppery finish features polished if youthful tannins and noteworthy purity of fruit. Knockout 2015 Brunello, one of the top half dozen of the year.”
James Suckling 95 points “This is a very decadent Brunello with dried stems, charcuterie, bay leaf, Thai basil and earth. Full-bodied and dense, the deeply interlocked layers of dark fruit nearly tripping over the ropey, chewy tannin structure. Drink from 2026.”

Balsamic elements of juniper, thyme and olive add depth as this cruises to a long finish. The potential lies in the excellent length. Best from 2023 through 2042. —B.S.”
Eric Guido – Vinous 94 points “La Gerla’s 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous, showing depths of earthy moist soil, minerals and hints of animal musk up front, giving way to crushed strawberry and cherry, getting spicy with lifting minerals yet retaining a rich character throughout. On the palate, silky textures are matched by cool-toned acids and refreshing moist mineral tones, as zesty cherry and cedar come forward. It’s so balanced and smooth, with high energy lasting into the long finish, showing saturating spice and salty minerals, yet remaining cool-toned and precise. The 2015 is a beautifully balanced wine that’s firmly rooted in the earth.”
