Vietti
Vietti is one of the benchmark producers in Barolo—a name that stands alongside Conterno, Mascarello, and Gaja in the short-list for the greatest in the region. Their style can be described as neo-classical. The wines aren’t ultra-traditional, but they do combine what the former owners and winemakers, Luca Currado and Elena Penna, value most about traditional wines of the Piedmont with modern cellar practices. The result is a set of wines that show tons of Nebbiolo character and distinct terroir signatures, but with a certain elegance that’s all Vietti.
The Barolos are the crown jewels of the estate. They represent the best sites under the Vietti’s spade. Organically farmed across the board, these wines offer a fantastic snapshot of the diversity of terroir in Barolo with a distinctive house style. Highly collectible and crafted in limited amounts, these promise decades of enjoyment after they shed their baby fat. Don’t skip their Barbaresco, either. It’s less well known, but no less a wine than its siblings.

The 2020 Castiglione is the final vintage to bear the name, which is a tribute to the commune of Castiglione Falletto, where the winery is located. It is a blend of grapes from their top Barolo holdings, including Bussia and Ravera.
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
Vietti Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 17 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 94 points “Racy and focused. I like the aromas of lavender, violet and white roses alongside strawberry, cranberry and stone. Medium body, with firm and fine tannins that are long and succulent. It’s fine and polished.”
The Brunate cru is in the La Morra region of Barolo, and is known for its elegance and finesse. The soils are rich in limestone and clay. Vietti describes the wines as offering “soft, rounded and velvety tannins” with an “explosive, powerful and big” nose showing “plum, citrusy hints of cedar and grapefruit, and hints of spices.”
Vietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “With fruit from La Morra, the mid-weight 2018 Barolo Brunate shows a pretty softness and a delicate side with dried rose, lilac and blue flower. The wine completes malolactic fermentation in barrique and is later moved into large oak casks for aging. This dual oak treatment is part of Vietti’s secret recipe for producing the silky tannins and fine texture you taste here. A production of 4,493 bottles, the wine is recognized by that distinctive aromatic finale of licorice and balsam herb.”
Vietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 97 points “Harmonious and seductive with endless counts of aromas in good depth. Strawberries, crushed raspberries, fresh lavender, tile, mineral and mild spices. Medium to full body with chalky, powerful tannins. Bright and tense at the center with extensive development with sour cherries, mineral, white pepper and grapefruit. The lengthy finish is focused, precise and taut.”
Complex and balanced even in its youth, Cerequio offers a fair amount of tannins that make it an under-the-radar star in the cellar. This historic vineyard results in wines of unmatched “elegance and balance,” according to the winery.
Vietti Cerequio, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points “The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is a new wine in this range. Soaring aromatics and bright, red-toned fruit give the Cerequio its effusive personality. Nuanced and deep, with tremendous complexity and tons of character, the Cerequio is dazzling. This is everything a great Barolo from Cerequio should be. In other words: textbook. More over, it’s one of the best wines of this very uneven vintage.”
Vietti Cerequio, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points “The 2019 Barolo Cerequio is a worthy follow up to the stellar 2018. Aromatic and deeply pitched, the 2019 races across the palate with remarkable depth and intensity. Crushed rted berry fruit, rose petal, mint, and cinnamon all open in the glass, but it is the wine’s silkiness and suppleness that impresses most. A kick of acids and tannins puts an exclamation point on the finish. This is a gorgeous Cerequio that takes all the finesse this site offers, and then turns up the volume. What a wine.”
Known for its brash and powerful wines, the Lazzarito cru is at the top of the hill overlooking Serralunga. Vietti describes the wines as “robust and potent, with a taut, mineral finish” and “stark, sharp and very profound” tannins with a “sweet persistence” on the finish.
Vietti Lazzarito, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $239, that’s $227.05 at 5% off and $215.10 at 10% off, 19 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98 points “With fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, the Vietti 2019 Barolo Lazzarito is a historic cornerstone wine of this mighty portfolio. It is also one of the Vietti Barolos that consistently delivers extreme quality and pleasure with each new release. Like the other wines presented here, winemaking is straightforward, with submerged cap fermentations lasting 30 to 35 days (although those times were reduced in 2019 because this vintage was not suited to long maceration times). Serralunga d’Alba always delivers power and richness. There are aromas of dried tobacco leaf, perfumed tea, crushed rose and iron ore. The bouquet is extremely expressive.”
Vietti Lazzarito, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96 points “There is a little more savoriness here, showing contained power. Tar and dark minerality. Plenty of forest berries, dried orange peel, frozen grapefruit and raspberries. Very structured and full-bodied, with firm, chewy tannins rendering the bold austere quality to the wine. But at the end, this is focused and taut, with a crunchy, spicy finish full of length. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drinkable now if you are willing to embrace austerity, but this should be better from 2027.”
Monvigliero in Verduno results in some of Barolos most sought-after wines, and Vietti’s is no exception. Described by Vietti as offering an “intense yet delicate” notes with “rounded, silky and persistent” tannins and unrivaled “aromatic complexity and gustative depth.”
Vietti Monvigliero, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 99 points “One of the palest and most perfumed Barolos from Vietti with a transparent, ruby-orange hue. This is a super nuanced, elegant, expressive and ethereal Monvigliero that grows on me, with enchanting notes of grilled grapefruit, thyme, frozen raspberries and mineral. A subtle splash of white pepper and mezcal-like smokiness. Really refined and transparent, with some citrus and mineral tensions that are closely knit with the fine, crumbled tannins. So much finesse and detail here, and its complexity will continue to unwind. Really composed, soulful and mind-blowing! An otherworldly, idiosyncratic Barolo that actually reminded me of the finest Gredo garnacha. A big wow that deserves attention. Vegan. Best with a Burgundy glass. Can drink now or from 2027.”
“Powerful yet elegant,” is how importer Della Terra describes this wine. Ravera in Novello results in vibrant, age-worthy wines with a classic structure, “vibrant and vertical” acidity, and slowly-building profundity upon opening.
Vietti Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95+ points “The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a wine of real depth and vertical structure. As always, the Ravera is a taut, nervy Barolo built on energy more than volume. Readers will have to be patient, as the Ravera is likely to require a number of years to be at its most expressive. Even in the early going, it is vibrant and full of life. Rose petal, chalk, blood orange and white pepper lend striking exotic top notes that are quite suggestive of what the future is going to bring. What a gorgeous Barolo this is.”
Vietti Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $269, that’s $255.55 at 5% off and $242.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98+ points “You could argue that this is the wine with the fasting growing quality trajectory because this vineyard site is one of those rare places in the appellation that appears to improve despite (or more likely because of) a changing climate. Ravera enjoys an open panorama (at 400 to 440 meters in elevation) that extends to the snow-capped Alps and benefits from cooler air currents, coupled with an amazing quality of light that you notice with the naked eye. The 2021 Barolo Ravera saw its fruit harvested later than the other wines, on October 11th, and continued with a classic Vietti-style fermentation with 20-plus days of skin contact. Simply put, what Ravera offers is complexity (and strength) with hints of bergamot, citrus, herbs, mineral and salt over a tightly concentrated mouthfeel. The quality of the tannins and the freshness of this 2021 are impressive, and that citrusy note continues with tangerine skin and kumquat. Production is 8,700 bottles.”
Rocche di Castiglione Falletto is one of the oldest and most famous vineyards in Barolo. While Giacosa’s bottling might be the most famous and strictly traditional, Vietti’s showcases the innovative cellar practices to highlight the powerful concentration of this complex yet elegant wine.
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
Vietti Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a magical wine from a magical site. It marries finesse and volume to a degree that is not found in most of the other wines in this range. Castiglione Falletto is the center of the Barolo production zone, literally and figuratively, the place where many different soil types meet. As a result, the wines often possess mind-blowing balance, which is very much the case here.”
Vietti Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $269, that’s $255.55 at 5% off and $242.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98+ points “This is a serious beauty that reminds us of the brilliant work underway at this leading estate. Yes, ownership has changed over recent years, but this wine remains “Rocche-solid.” From an epic vintage, the Vietti 2021 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a classic with those elegant mineral notes of glacial till and flake salt followed by carefully ripened fruit, blackcurrant and a finely tuned floral note of fragrant tea leaf that hits the high notes. The effect is ethereal but also precise. Fruit comes from two parcels, one planted in 1958 and the other in 1969, and the blend is half of each fermented together. Fruit was picked on October 1st, and the wine saw 24 days on the skins. The first year this wine was produced is 1961. The Rocche di Castiglione site has 35% sand with marl soils that continue to evolve, kicking out more new sand. Only 3,728 bottles exist, and that’s the bad news.”
Also hailing from Castiglion Falletto, Villero yields exceptional Barolos of depth, complexity, and ageability. Bottled only in the finest vintages, the 2016 is one for the ages—and quite possibly the finest ever in this century.
Vietti Villero, Barolo Riserva DOCG 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $549, that’s $521.55 at 5% off and $494.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 98 points “Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry, rose, wild herbs, stony mineral and autumn woods are the hallmarks of this elegant red, which is beginning to reveal all of its facets yet is still structured. Leaves a chalky feel of refined tannins on the long finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 370 cases made, 60 cases imported.”
