Dönnhoff

The Nahe is one of Germany’s most compelling wine regions. Combining the heft of the Rheingau with the elegance and minerality inherent in the Mosel, the region offers something no other can boast: winemakers Helmut and Cornelius Dönnhoff. Anyone who knows the wines knows that praise is well deserved.

Dönnhoff is one of our favorite German producers.  They excel with both dry and off-dry wines, producing some of the top dozen Rieslings in nearly every vintage. Their privileged location in the Nahe, includes some of the finest and most geologically diverse vineyards in all of Germany. The other part is the exceptional drive and focus of this father and son duo, who will stop at nothing to produce the best wines in Germany.

Long-favorites of the staff, even the entry-level wines are nothing to shrug at, offering unrivaled complexity in the under $30 range. From there, they produce dozens of options from their vineyards, from bone dry to nobly sweet. The dry options top out at the GG, short for Grosses Gewächs, which is a dry and powerful wine from one of Germany’s Grand Cru vineyards.

These are wines for any occasion, at prices that still suggest the producer inhabits that weird status of insider secret despite receiving heaps of praise (and massive scores) for over a decade.

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2021 Grauburgunder Trocken offers a fully ripe and elegant bouquet with flinty and refreshing stony notes spicing the fully ripe and generous but pure and elegant fruit. Medium to full-bodied, this is a round and elegant, finely fresh, persistently saline and structured Pinot Gris with a long and stimulating finish. 12% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in July 2022.”

“What an exquisite stone fruit nose this super-fine and filigree dry riesling has! Yes, it is also very concentrated, but this and the power are completely underplayed. The result is an almost weightless palate that hangs like a white cloud in the still air. Extraordinary purity and precision at the almost endless finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $104.50, that’s $99.28 at 5% off and $94.05 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 100 points
“This dry riesling has a hypnotic beauty that leaves no doubt how this wine redefines what peachy means in the context of this grape variety. As it aerates, a wealth of wild berry and flower nuances develop and expand. Given the mind-bending concentration of this wine, it is staggeringly fresh and absolutely precise. Then comes the finish, which is like a prima ballerina dancing on pointe off into the distance. Drink from release.”

Weingut Donnhoff Hermannshohle Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 99 points
“The restrained beauty of the peachiness in the nose is hard to describe, but easy to be overwhelmed by! On the compact palate this has staggering concentration yet still manages to be very light on its feet. The finish is blade-runner sharp, but the blade also flashes in the sun. Breathtaking drive and energy for the very warm and dry vintage. Then comes the remarkable wet-stone minerality and you can’t wait for the next sip. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 100 points
“Incredibly refined and precise, yet with Grand Canyon-like depths and layers, this incredible dry riesling has a horizon-to-horizon spectrum of stone fruit, citrus and wild berry aromas, plus a touch of dusty hot soil as rain starts to fall on it. On the compact, medium-bodied palate, this side of the wine builds and builds to a giant crescendo in the almost endless finish. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Tonschiefer Riesling Trocken 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 23 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 94 points
“The vibrant aromas of white peaches and white blossoms are married to an intense slatey minerality in this sleek and precise dry Nahe riesling. Quite some structure, although it is barely medium-bodied. Wonderful stony intensity at the very long, bright finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

Weingut Donnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 29 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 95 points
“Ripe and concentrated, but also quite austere with stacks of spice and grapefruit character; everything from the juice to the pith and zest! A seriously dry riesling, but with moderate acidity. Long crushed rock finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Roxheimer Hollenpfad Riesling Trocken 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 21 bottles in stock now
Grapelive 94 points
“The pristine and steely medium bodied palate shows of lime blossom, green apple, tart apricot, quince and tangerine, along with quinine, chamomile, almond, herb, flinty mineral spice, wet rock, lemon oil and saline. Zingy and youthfully energetic this Riesling also has the signature purity and elegance you’d expect of a Dönnhoff and it is complex enough to thrill the most jaded of Riesling lovers. There’s more to come with patience I believe and while I might be hard pressed not to enjoy this one right away, there should be extra rewards for those who wait, it should get another few years in bottle to fully express itself.”

Weingut Donnhoff Kreuznacher Krotenpfuhl Riesling Kabinett 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.31 at 5% off and $28.71 at 10% off, 30 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 93 points
“Brimming with tart-peach, ripe-gooseberry and lemon aromas, this is such a fresh and delightful Kabinett. Who could resist? Sleek and light in body with stunning freshness and purity that pulls you back for more. From the cool plateau of this site, which is within the town of Bad Kreuznach. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 94 points
“Stand back as this riesling lightning strike arrives. Complex nose of dried flowers and summer meadows. Ripe and juicy, but also very elegant and crisp with stunning mineral freshness at the very long pointed finish. Delicious, but also excellent potential. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 17 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 96 points
“A stunningly elegant and vibrant riesling Kabinett that is packed with white peach and honeysuckle aromas. Succulent on the front of the light-bodied palate, then with a crystalline purity at the finish that takes your breath away. This is not analytically dry, but plenty of enthusiastic wine drinkers will say that is exactly what it is. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

Weingut Donnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spätlese 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 18 bottles in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 92 points
“There is a whiff of pine that is followed by juicy nectarine and macerated apricot notes in this lush spätlese. It’s balanced and very expressive, with prominent acidity that flows authoritatively, but it is well merged with the rest of the elements. — Aleks Zecevic”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spätlese 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 27 bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spätlese 2023 1.5L Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 98 points
“When worlds collide. The tension between the cool, dark side (think Darth Vader) and the enormous brightness of the stone fruit (think Luke Skywalker) makes this astonishing riesling Spatlese extremely compelling. The most beautiful pineapple and grapefruit aromas. Fabulous freshness at the stunningly straight and pure finish. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 28 bottles in stock now

Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 97 points
“The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese, grown on shale, has equal notions of moss and lemon. More air makes this smell simply of wet stone. The palate carries gentle sweetness but is absolutely precise and slender. Citrus frames everything with the clearest precision. Everything is serene, zesty, tender, yet so very serious. The 2023 is glorious in its lightness and disarming in its elegance. (Sweet) (Drink between 2034-2070).”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese 2018 375ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 7 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese is perfectly clear and fresh but still intense and concentrated on the spicy and complex nose. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a fresh, stunningly pure and playful Brücke that is singing and dancing on the knife’s edge. Fabulous in its purity, tension and finesse. Nevertheless, there is the ripeness you can expect from an Auslese. Tasted in July 2019.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Auslese 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Auslese 2023 375ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 6 half-bottles in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 96 points
“The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Auslese was selected at the same time as the Spätlese. Dönnhoff says that for him, Auslese is merely a more concentrated Spätlese. He notes that passerillage also plays a part here. Slight smoke and Reine Claude plum compote on the nose continue straight to the palate, edged with beautiful lemon brightness. The 2023 shows gorgeous depth, deep lemon and gentle sweetness. A touch of herbal tisane adds a minty edge, exquisitely light, precise and sweet. This wine is a paradigm of lightness and elegance. (Sweet).”
Indulge your senses in a bottle of Sake, a traditional Japanese alcoholic beverage made from milled rice that is fermented with yeasts and fungi (known as kōji). The level of polish of the kernels can indicate quality, as it strips away the bran, fat, and proteins that would mar the sake.

Kōji plays a role in everything from soy sauce to miso production. Its fungi convert starch and other carbohydrates into fermentable sugars the yeast can break down. Water is also added, oftentimes from mountain runoff or underground springs.

A Junmai or “pure rice” sake made exclusively from rice, water, yeast, and “koji” (a kind of fermented rice and yeast starter—think of sourdough or sour mash starter as an analogue— used in miso, sake, soy sauce) without additives like sugar or neutral spirits.
