Molitor

As a towering figure in the Mosel, with an impressive, modern winery and holdings in almost every important vineyard in the region, Markus Molitor crafts dozens of wines each year. He believes that every single sub-parcel and selective pick should be vinified to its utmost potential. What results is a somewhat confusing, especially to those unfamiliar with German labeling conventions, but deeply rewarding portfolio of wines to explore.

Whether white capsule (bone dry), green capsule (off-dry), or gold capsule (fruity to nobly sweet), Markus’ wines represent some of the Mosel’s best. And thanks to his extensive holdings, Molitor offers German Riesling lovers with a passport to explore many of the region’s most important vineyards.

How to choose? Let us guide you through the wines village-by-village as we explore this excellent producer on our three-day sale!

At a sharp bend in the Mosel River is the village of Bernkastel, where we find Bernkasteler Badstube and Bernkasteler Lay. The name “Badstube” is in reference to the hot springs near the village that became famous during the Middle Ages. Despite the following naming conventions for a single-vineyard wine, Bernkasteler Badstube actually refers to the collection of six vineyards. Wines with this designation can come from any mix of the sites, though it would be an oversight to think of Bernkasteler Badstube as a mere village wine. Even the VDP designates it as a Grosse Lage, or Great Growth. The six vineyards include some of the most famous vineyards in the world of wine. The wines tend to be racy and floral with lively acidity and a long aging potential.

The tiny Bernkasteler Lay (pronounced “lie”) vineyard is a long strip of a vineyard that extends from a sharp bend in the river. The soils in Lay are blue slate, imparting rich texture and minerality to the wines. It rivals Doktor for the most prestigious vineyard in Bernkastel.

Just north of our previously explored village of Bernkastel, is Graach. This is home to multiple Grosse Lage vineyards (First Growth), including Domprobst and Himmelreich. Graacher Domprobst rests just above the village of Graach and has weathered Devonian slate and clay soil with a southwestern exposure. The stony slate soil retains heat, and the vineyards situation shelters it from the cold and winds, resulting in wines that are powerful and ripe. Willi Schaefer describes the resulting wines as “more wild, earthy and spicy than the ones from Himmelreich.”

Graacher Himmelreich is an incredibly steep site with soils of blue slate and clay. Wines are known for their deep minerality and ageability, utterly charming in their youth, the wines blossoms into elegance with time.

In the center of the town of Kinheim facing south towards the Mosel River is the VDP Grosse Lage vineyard Rosenberg. The vineyard slope is roughly sixty degrees, steep by anyone’s measure. The soil here is coarse, red-brown, and full of grey slate. It’s quick draining, at times testing the limits of the grape vines. But in their struggles, the vines offer small berries that produce gorgeous wines with delicacy and minerality.

Kinheimer Hubertuslay is just upriver from Rosenberg. This site offers deep soils rich in weathered grey slate. It’s cool and buffeted by the wind. Molitor’s portion is steep with a southern exposure. The wines show incredible depth with freshness, delicacy, and incredible aromatics.

There is no other vineyard in the Mosel that results in wines so intensely spicy, earthy and so richly tropical than Ürziger Würzgarten, in the village of Ürzig. The lightness and elegance of the fruit is impossible to replicate. It is famous for the high percentage of iron in the soil in addition to its blue and gray slate, contributing a spicy characteristic that proves its name (Ürziger Würzgarten translates to “the spice garden of Ürzig”). Molitor’s wines in particular rank among the best examples from the vineyard. His holdings include those of the former Jos. Christoffel Jr., whose estate dates to the 12th century.

Wehlen and its most famous vineyard, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, are arguably the most important and beloved portion of the entire Mosel. It is also the home of Markus Molitor’s winery.

The soils in Sonnenuhr (which translates to “sundial” in German, in reference to the bold sundial in the vineyard) are Devonian slate. The vineyard itself is one of the country’s rockiest: laden with large, slate stones. This type of soil imparts the classic deep minerality and vibrancy to the grapes. The slate captures the heat of the day, radiating it to the grapes to aid ripening, and its poor ability to retain water encourages the vines to dig their roots deep into the soil, drawing up nutrients held far below the surface.

In municipality of Zeltingen-Rachtig, we find the vineyard of Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, which shares the sundial and famous Devonian blue slate of Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The wines from this site offer a deep mineral core. This soil type offers excellent heat holding and poor water retention, which aids ripening and forces the vines to dig deep for water and nutrients.

Zeltinger Sonnenuhr is of particular interest to insiders because of the high number of ungrafted vines. According to Molitor, the vineyard results in wines of “incredibly elegant and delicate, with an abundant interplay of flavors and filigree acid structure.”

Zeltinger Himmelreich towers above Mosel at a somewhat higher elevation than its siblings. The bulk of it sits above the village of Zeltingen. With its deep eroded slate and gravel soils, Himmelreich offers juicy and elegant wines that tend to show notes of “yellow fruits, with subtly piquant aromas and fine, playful acidity,” per Molitor.

Zeltinger Schlossberg is a steep site. Its 52 acres have a dark slate soil over decomposed slate and loam. This is a cooler site being situated back from the Mosel River and closer to the forest. The wines show concentration with “animating acidity and mineral finishes,” per Molitor.

Round, lush and piquant on the palate, with a crystalline and salty, very delicate yet vibrantly fresh acidity, this is a full-bodied, intense and complex, very long and textural Hubertuslay from finely weathered slate soils. The finish is long, fresh and round as well as grippy, salty and piquant. Still young and with fine tannins, the 2019 will benefit from bottle aging. Tasted in May 2021.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points
“From 80- to 120-year-old vines, the intensely citrus-yellow colored 2017 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese ** (White Capsule) offers an absurdly deep, highly intense, complex and concentrated bouquet with lime confit, perfectly ripe white stone fruits and flinty notes of crushed stones and lemon zest. On the palate, this is a dense, rich and powerful yet highly elegant and seamlessly textured Sonnenuhr with very fine tannins and a tightly woven structure that channels the immense power of this dry Riesling. “Physical drinking starts here,” Markus Molitor says with a smile, and indeed, this is a spectacularly strong and concentrated Riesling. Despite its power, density and tension, the 2017 is super elegant and silky and reveals perfectly ripe, interwoven acidity and spicy piquancy. This is a fascinating Riesling with outstanding finesse and a very long, promising finish. This is one of the finest two-starred Auslesen I have tasted from Markus Molitor, and it kisses the three-star level. I can only recommend buying some cases and enjoying this beauty over the next 20 to 30 years. Tasted in March and April 2019.”

Markus Molitor Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese *** Trocken (White Capsule) 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98+ points
“Partly from the Felsentreppe, the 2019 Erdener Treppchen Auslese *** (White Capsule) opens with a pure, fresh and flinty, iron-rich and refined bouquet of tropical fruit aromas with notes of broken (red) slate, lemon oil and lemon juice. Fat but refined, this wine combines the incompatible. Round and wide as well as precise and piquant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and concentrated yet powerful, vibrantly fresh and persistently salty Riesling with cognac or whisky features due its oaky and iodine character. Highly vital and salty, very elegant and complex, vibrantly fresh, with seriously firm tannin grip and a generous tropical stone fruit aroma, this is a giant in the making, but it needs some years to celebrate its class. Any Meursault would honor this Mosel Riesling that has been aged in a 770-liter Stockinger vat and a Burgundy pičce. Tasted in May 2021.”

Markus Molitor Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Trocken (White Capsule) 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 14 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98+ points
“The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (White Capsule) offers a deep, ripe and highly intense yet refined and noble bouquet of ripe (tropical) stone fruits such as mango, golden passion fruit and persimmon, finely crushed and flinty slate as well as iodine notes. Rich and intense yet highly refined and crystalline on the palate, with vibrant yet finessed acidity and lots of elegant or even subversive power, grip and tension, this is a highly elegant, multilayered and endlessly salty as well as frisky Sonnenuhr that delivers all the charm and complexity we may expect from this praised grand cru but rarely had in our glasses as perfectly as it comes here. This is a sustainable Sonnenuhr that I have rarely tasted with such a firm and serious structure and initial austerity. The wine has salt and tannic grip on the finish, but it has to be aged for another 8-10 years at least. One day this might be another giant from the Molitor category of “physical drinking.” Tasted from AP 52 20 in May 2021.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94+ points
“Molitor’s 2019 Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett (Green Capsule) opens pure and flinty on the deep and complex, very intense yet bright and fascinating, seductive and terroir-driven nose. Lush and round on the palate yet with salty-piquant and vibrantly fresh acidity, this is a structured, even somewhat tannic Kabinett to cellar for at least 2-3 more years. Very long and endlessly salty. Tasted in May 2021.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points
“The 2016 Riesling Zeltinger Himmelreich Auslese ** (Green Capsule) is terribly fine, pure and fresh but also perfectly ripe and rich on the nose without losing precision. Round and highly elegant on the palate, with tropical fruit flavors and just the perfect amount of sweetness, this is a great, vital Himmelreich with superb finesse, purity, mineral tension and bright fruit notes in the long and beautifully slatey finish. This is a gorgeous, exciting Riesling—very stimulating.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 99 points
“The 2019 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese *** (Green Capsule) opens enormously deep, intense and complex on the nose that immediately indicates the wine is in an exceptional class on its own. Only with lots of aeration does the wine become more and more pure and fresh and develop a flinty lemon note with the finest perfume. On the palate, this is a rich, round and complex, sweet, wide and mouth-filling, very generous, free and easy-flowing Himmelreich of exceptional finesse and beauty. The finish is so stimulating, salty, pure and crunchy in its slate character, whereas the crater dug by the piquancy is filled in by the perfectly ripe and healthy fruit with lush intensity. The 2019 Himmelreich Auslese *** is sensational and the finest I have ever tasted from Markus Molitor. Tasted from AP 1 20 in May 2021.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points
“The 2016 Riesling Kinheimer Rosenberg Auslese *** (Green Capsule) offers a super fine raisin and refreshing slatey/flinty bouquet that indicates great purity, finesse and crunchy/slatey freshness. The fermentation stopped at 34 grams of residual sugar per liter (11% alcohol), and the resulting wine is highly delicate, pure, lush and piquant on the palate. It is quite sweet and shows celery flavors as well as great tension that is neither rustic nor challenging but really fine, giving vibrancy, grip and energy to the lush and generous but always precise and elegant Riesling fruit. This is an exciting wine, and Markus filled it as a three-starred Auslese for the first time because he was convinced the wine deserves it. Tasted March 2018.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 99 points
“The intensely golden-yellow colored 2019 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Green Capsule) opens with a deep, enormously rich and concentrated but also precise, fresh and flinty bouquet of ripe, tropical fruits intertwined with lemon aromas and very fine notes of crushed slate and, only initially, more than just a hint of very fine oak (3,000-liter foudres). Full-bodied, rich and perfectly round on the palate yet also with incredible finesse and elegance for this weight category, this is a dense and concentrated, firmly structured, vital, salty-mineral and finely tannic Sonnenuhr with a spectacularly dense core and an endlessly long, intense and energetic as well as aromatic finish. This is a dramatic Riesling and another highlight of the 2019 vintage in all of Germany. It comes highly recommended and is definitely a wine to keep for at least 10-15 years, even though it already tastes very attractive. Stimulatingly salty on the finish. From 120-year-old vines on very fine slate soils. Tasted from AP 59 20 in May 2021.”

This is a fabulous Spätlese! Tasted in April 2019.”

Raffault picks the fruit dedicated to the Rosé at the start of his harvest period, when it typically has attained one degree less in sugar than that of the Chinon Les Galuches, which is picked next…The color is light and bright cherry-red (…the color of the 2023 was more intense…), the exact shade Rodolphe aimed for. Aromas and flavors of red currants, raspberry and pomegranate, citrus and cherry fruit emanate from the glass. The finish is long, fresh and succulent.”
