Top Oregon Picks for Your Holiday Table

The quality of Oregon’s wines has never been higher. Between older vines, a string of excellent vintages and, most importantly, the wealth of expertise and sense of community in the Willamette Valley, the wines we taste every week are absolutely stunning.  We’re highlighting three of our favorite producers, all of whom make wines that would be perfect for any special occasion this fall/winter, but you can see all of our Oregon Pinot and Oregon Chardonnay in the webstore, as well.

Beaux Freres and Sequitur

Mike Etzel, the founder and winemaker of Sequitur, is a living legend in the Willamette Valley.  He co-founded Beaux Freres in the late 80’s and was the winemaker there until recently passing the duties to his son.  Never one to rest on his laurels or stay still, though, he began planting a vineyard adjacent to Beaux Freres in 2010—a project that became what we know as Sequitur.

It’s helpful to think of Sequitur as a distillation of everything Mike Etzel learned while starting and producing Beaux Freres over the decades.  The Sequitur vineyard sits right next to the Beaux Freres “Upper Terrace” but is planted to a wider array of clones at tighter spacing.  It’s been farmed biodynamically since the beginning and is sheltered with Douglas Fir—in short, it’s the fully realized vision of a man who’s helped define Willamette Valley Pinot.

The winemaking style is exactly what you’d expect—these are wines that are made by the same hand that delivered so many high scores to Beaux Freres (though his son, Mikey, is the day-to-day winemaker). Big, powerful and bold, these nevertheless have energy and grace that we think comes from the extra-attentive farming and unique clonal selection in the vineyard.  In short order, they’ve established themselves as one of the very best producers in the Willamette Valley and deserve your attention as such.

Wine Advocate 94+ points
“The 2015 Sequitur Chardonnay delivers toasted almonds, baker’s yeast, fresh ginger and coriander seed on the nose with a core of grapefruit, white peaches and spiced apples. Josh Raynolds – Vinous 94 points “Light, brilliant yellow. Powerful, spice-accented orchard and pit fruit aromas pick up lemon pith, honey and floral nuances with air. Cameron

“Burgundy or Oregon–what really matters is that Cameron produces some of the latter’s finest Pinot Noir and in winemaker John Paul, one of its most erudite, principled, forward-thinking/traditional and charismatic personalities that I encountered during my time there.” – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate

Cameron holds a special place in the heart of anyone who loves Oregon wine.  Winemaker John Paul has been making some of the best wines to come out of the Willamette Valley since 1984.  The wines have Burgundian sensibilities, in that they age extremely well and have impeccable balance, but they are as ‘Oregon’ as they come.  If you were to ask a selection of winemakers here who their top 5 wineries are; Cameron will be in every list.

There are two main vineyards, Clos Electrique and Abbey Ridge, both in the Dundee Hills AVA.  The Clos (named after the electric deer fence that surrounds the property) makes slightly more powerful wines, while Abbey Ridge (at higher elevation) produces wines with a little more acidity and structure.  The whites are complex and intense as well.

Cameron is also notable for being the leading member of the Deep Roots Coalition—an organization of wineries that are committed to dry farming and for being one of the most thoughtful farmers in the valley.

In Stock Now:

Cameron Winery ‘Abbey Ridge’ Chardonnay, Dundee Hills 2016 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
VinopolNote:
Abbey Ridge sits high atop the Dundee Hills; a collection of vines planted on their own roots in the mid-70’s. It’s unquestionably one of the most special sites in the Willamette Valley and though it’s better known for Pinot Noir, the Abbey Chard is fantastic.  This is the most limited of the Chardonnay bottlings from Cameron and isn’t produced every year (there was no 2014 version).

Cameron Winery ‘Abbey Ridge’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2017 750ML ($79.95) $66 special
Winery note
“The 2017 Abbey Ridge Pinot noir has aromas of cherry, pomegranate, cranberry and spiced oranges mingling with straw, ginger and as always rose petals.  A higher percentage of Pommard in this year’s blend introduces flavors of cracked pepper, black olive and salumi.  The front to back of the palate is seamless, with soft tannins, bright lively acidity, a long lingering finish and perfect moderate alcohol of 12.8%.  At over 40 years of age, Abbey Ridge is one of the oldest and best vineyards in the state of Oregon.”
VinopolNote: Abbey Ridge is one of the most hallowed sites in the Willamette Valley.  Planted in 1975, the Pinot Noir here is own rooted and at one of the highest elevations in the Dundee Hills.  The elevation and classic Jory soils give the wine an intense personality—high toned, elegant and tensile, with good power and a strong voice.  This bottling has been one of the defining Oregon Pinots since John Paul started making it.

Cameron Winery Clos Electrique Blanc, Dundee Hills 2017 750ML ($79.95) $66 special
VinopolNote
: The Clos Electrique is Cameron’s estate vineyard, named after the electric deer fence that surrounds it.  This is planted to a mix of clones and is vinified traditionally—no racking and all in older barrels.  This is crisp and coiled, with distinct minerality and a lot of power in a lithe frame.  Like most vintages of the Electrique Blanc, this is quite good now but will be stellar in a few years.

Cameron Winery Nebbiolo, Dundee Hills 2016 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Grapelive 95 points
“The 2016 Cameron Nebbiolo is truly a gorgeous wine and can easily be considered an American Barolo with its pure varietal character and profile. This vintage is just stunning and shows that this grape can be just as majestic in the Willamette Valley as it is in the Langhe! The Cameron Dundee Hills Nebbiolo shows a deep garnet color with just a hint of classic brickish magenta on the edges. The wine displays an earthy element along with pretty floral notes on the nose before revealing exceptional layers of traditional dark berries, plum, brandied cherries and black fig fruits along with blood orange, anise, dried lavender and a light cedrary spiciness. There’s so much to love here, the supple tannins and velvety mouth feel, but with structure at its core this wine gets better and better as it opens in the glass, filling out completely and becoming seamless and gaining depth with every sip, making for an exquisite Nebbiolo experience. The Cameron Nebbiolo shines in this vintage and the warmer site here allows riper flavors to come through and a lovely sense of richness, while still having the energy, leathery-earthiness and natural acidity the grape is known for. Interesting enough the alcohol is somewhat lower than warm year Barolo(s) that are coming in at 14.5% and higher. At 13% this wine delivers a fine balance and is fantastic with rustic cuisine. The Cameron Nebbiolo is sourced from the winery’s Clos Electrique cru vineyard in the Dundee Hills, set on the Jory (volcanic) soils, famous for winemaker John Paul’s Pinot Noirs, which are some of Oregon’s greatest wines. This estate vineyard consists of, according to the winery, approximately 3 acres of Pinot Noir, 2 acres of Chardonnay, half an acre of Italian white grape varieties, including Friulano and 1 acre of Nebbiolo that was first planted back in 1994. Cameron’s John Paul, who is a huge Italian wine geek and Barolo enthusiast, believed that Nebbiolo could thrive here as it was on a similar parallel and [since] hazelnut trees do well in both Piedmont and in the Willamette Valley. In fact Paul cleared an ex-hazelnut orchard to plant his two clones of Nebbiolo. Very early on it was clear he was right and that Nebbiolo could be a huge success, and this 2016 rises to a level of greatness. Cameron uses non irrigated vines that are farmed all organically which adds to the wine’s concentration and traditional old world winemaking techniques in the cellar with this Nebbiolo seeing extended elevage having adopted, as Paul notes, the long aging regimen typical of Barolo and Barbaresco to be more evolved and mature on release. The Cameron or Cameroni Italian inspired wines are outstanding, especially this Nebbiolo, plus their series of whites, like the Friuli style blend and the Pinot Bianco and the Ramato, skin contact Pinot Gris.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars

Marcus Goodfellow is one of the premier winemakers in Oregon.  He founded Matello wines, his original label, in 2002 and hasn’t looked back since, making wines that have continually improved—both in bottle and from vintage to vintage.  These are profound wines, both white and red, that are made in a style that’s distinctly savory—no fruit bombs here.  Rather, we love them for their coiled power and Burgundian structure. These are wines that speak with an Oregon voice, but the tannin and acidity comes from an old-world point of view.

We’ve recently brought in a new round of his excellent wines, mostly from the top-tier 2018 vintage, but also some of his higher-end 2017’s (a vintage we love, as well). These are some of, if not the, best wines he’s made—a fantastic combination of exceptional years and a winemaker at the absolute top of his game. The wines that have been reviewed reflect this, with high scores and glowing praise from Vinous.

Newly Arrived from Goodfellow:

Goodfellow Family Cellars Ribbon Ridge Chardonnay 2018 750ML ($33.95) $27 special
Winery Note
“Beautiful opening aromas of pear tart, meyer lemon, spring flowers and hazelnut. Light bodied but textural, silky and expansive. Clean lines, lively, refreshing citrus, baguette crust, cream, and just a touch smoke. Adds notes of orchard fruits, yellow apple and pear. This seems like a perfect holiday wine to me. It’s delicious, low alcohol, textural enough for cooler weather (and sunny in it’s nature which is enjoyable when the weather is poor). It’s unquestionably fine wine and offers tremensdous value.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Richard’s Cuvee Chardonnay Whistling Ridge Vineyard, Ribbon Ridge 2018 750ML ($59.95) $51.90 special
Winery note
“The 2018 Richard’s Cuvée shows notes of lime blossoms, mandarin curd, stone, white flowers, lilac, and fresh hay. Fine, with wings tucked tight. Direct, sharply defined, and old school, with energy and elegance, lemon, rainwater, and mineral resonance. From a single 800L foudre, 88 cases produced.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Temperance Hill Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2018 750ML ($47.95) $36 special
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 93 points
“Dark, vivid garnet. Ripe red and blue fruit, floral and spice qualities on the deeply perfumed nose, along with hints of musky earth and woodsmoke. Appealingly sweet and fleshy on the palate, offering concentrated black raspberry, cherry, mulberry, floral pastille and exotic spice flavors that gain energy as the wine opens up. Shows excellent clarity and floral lift on a long, focused finish shaped by smooth, well-judged tannins. Drinking window 2023-2031. “
Winery Note “Red fruited and mineral, expressive and elegant nose with cedar, cinnamon and perfume, raspberry leaf, savory, thyme, strawberries, dried rose petals and potpourri.  Violets, red cherry, gardenias, bright and clean with mid-weight fruit, nerve and pull and an amaro-esque, mineral finish. Tightly wound right now but opens beautifully with air. “

Goodfellow Family Cellars Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2018 750ML ($44.95) $36 special
Winery Note
“I love this wine. Vibrantly red fruited, elegant, light-bodied and gamine-like.  Perhaps the most purely red of the 2018 Pinot Noirs. Red currants, dry red cherries, potpourri, and orange peel. Weightless, refreshing, crystalline, juicy in the mouth adding strawberries to the parade of red fruits. Very pure, very Pinot Noir.  Drink for a year with food, then from 2023-2030.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Fir Crest Vineyard Pinot Noir, Yamhill Carlton 2018 750ML ($47.95) $36 special
Winery Note
“Purple flowers, violets and lavender. Sandalwood, fresh ground coffee, basil, conifer, and rooibos tea. Opens to deep red cherry, blackberry, and perhaps even blueberry pie. Clean linear entry, no excess fat, weightless and energetic, moving with crisp freshness from red raspberry into blue fruits, into fine tannins and fresh nervy acidity. Long and bright. Reminds me of very good Santenay. This will gain weight and texture over the next year, tighten up for a bit, and then drink very well for the next 12-15 years.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Lewman Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2018 750ML ($44.95) $36 special
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 92 points
“Limpid magenta. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, cherry, candied rose and exotic spices, and a bright mineral overtone gains strength with air. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering alluringly sweet, well-concentrated black raspberry, cherry liqueur, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that flesh out through the midpalate. Delivers a suave blend of power and delicacy and finishes impressively long and smooth, with harmonious tannins and outstanding clarity.”
VinopolNote: Lewman is a tiny vineyard that sits between Bethel Heights and Temperance Hill—absolutely prime territory for Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir.  This wine is a perfect reflection of the vineyard, with pretty black-chery and raspberry flavors leaning into a savory, soil driven edge. Fruitier and more floral than Temperance, it’s still chiseled and powerful, as is typical of the region.

In a vibrant, precise style, offering juicy red currant, raspberry and cherry flavors that take a deeper turn through the midpalate. Shows fine definition and mineral punch on an impressively long, detailed finish framed by smooth, well-hidden tannins.  Drinking window 2022-2030.”

Josh Raynolds – Vinous 94 points
“Brilliant garnet. Deeply perfumed red and blue fruit and cherry cola aromas, along with baking spice, candied rose and smoky mineral accents. Shows impressive definition on the palate, offering concentrated yet surprisingly lively, spice-accented black raspberry, cherry, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that pick up a succulent herb nuance with air. Finishes impressively long and youthfully chewy, with polished tannins providing grip to lingering cherry, allspice and bitter chocolate notes.   Drinking window 2023-2031.”
Winery Note “Rich red fruits on opening lean up and turn red-blue with air, cocoa, dried flowers in the attic, graphite, red loamy earth. Heady and textural on opening, with sweet spices, amaro, more dry earth, and leather, giving way to savory herbs and mineral. With air it becomes a paragon of restraint, beautiful  currant and pomegranate. One of my favorite wines from 2018, please don’t skip this.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Heritage #11 Pinot Noir Durant Vineyard, Dundee Hills 2018 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 95 points
“Limpid garnet. An impressively complex bouquet evokes vibrant, spice-accented red berries and pungent flowers that show fine definition and lift. Stains the palate with sweet, energetic cherry, raspberry, rose pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen and take a darker turn on the back half. Shows outstanding definition and power on the impressively long, penetrating finish, which is framed by talc-y, slowly mounting tannins. 100% whole clusters.  Drinking window 2024-2033. “
Winery Note “Deeply garnet, beautiful color. Expressive but restrained, begins with red cherries and layers of brown spices. With air, becomes beautifully filigreed, dense yet weightless, loamy earth, thyme, smoke, tobacco, deep red fruits and florals, red satin quality to the nose. Quintessential Dundee Hills. Middle weight, juicy, full fruit, layers of spice yet little sweetness, and very fine savory  tannins. Vinous, youthfully exuberant now, but with obvious upside. Tremendous on day two. So good. Goodfellow Family Cellars Heritage #12 Pinot Noir Whistling Ridge Vineyard, Ribbon Ridge 2018 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 94 points
“Deep, bright-hued scarlet. Powerful red and dark berry, cherry pit, exotic spice and licorice scents take on a suave floral topnote with air. Stains the palate with appealingly sweet, spice-tinged cherry, black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that steadily firm up through the midpalate. Conveys a suave blend of depth and finesse and finishes extremely long and precise, with polished tannins coming in late.   Drinking window 2022-2030.”
Winery Note “Deeply fragrant. Dense, tranquil, ripe dark red cherry and strawberry, strawberry leaf, summer garden.  Lilacs, lavender, and brown spices. Succulent juicy ripe fruits, excellent energy, weightless but juicy and full, finishing with bright acidity and firm tannins. Opens to cherry blossoms, strawberry pie, bright red currant and apple, wonderful balance between fruit and savory finish. This is the first year that this wine has been crafted from the best of three blocks: House, Long and Beloved. Longevity will not be a problem for this wine, but it has plenty of fruit for some early looks.  Lovely now over a few days, I think that with air this really shows well and should continue to integrate over the next year. Then drink from 2023-2030”

Killer Beaujolais from a new star producer.
Domaine de la Grosse Pierre Chiroubles ‘Aux Craz’, Beaujolais 2018 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93 points
“Offering up aromas of ripe cherries and raspberries as well as hints of rose petal and peony, the 2018 Chiroubles Aux Craz is medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, its deep core of succulent fruit framed by satiny tannins. This bottling derives from 70-year-old vines in the domaine’s highest-altitude holdings in lieu-dit Grosse Pierre.”

Marchesi Antinori Tenuta Guado al Tasso Il Bruciato Bolgheri, Tuscany 2017 750ML ($34.95) $24 special
Case-6 Marchesi Antinori Tenuta Guado al Tasso Il Bruciato Bolgheri, Tuscany 2017 750ML ($199.95) $136 special (that’s only $22.66/bottle!)
James Suckling 93 points
“There’s a very fresh array here of thyme, newly picked blackcurrants, iodine, crushed stones and sea salt. The exuberant fruit is matched nicely to fine and elegant tannins, which paint a compact and neat picture on the medium-to full-bodied palate. Drink from 2021.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 91 points “This is another extremely popular wine that is easily found up and down the Tuscan Coast. This red blend (with the largest part of the blend going to Cabernet Sauvignon) opens to a soft and velvety texture. The 2017 Bolgheri Rosso Il Bruciato offers some noticeable ripeness with black cherry, prune and raisin. But ultimately, the wine shows a good level of freshness because the acidity in the grapes was concentrated (like everything else in this hot vintage) in the year’s smaller berries. Tenuta Guado al Tasso extends over 340 hectares. Because of the hot vintage, only 65,000 cases were made of this wine instead of the 100,000 cases produced in a normal vintage.”
Antonio Galloni 90 points “The 2017 Bolgheri Il Bruciato is pliant, supple and luscious, but what stands out most is how much freshness Antinori was able to keep in this wine. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, new leather and floral notes all meld together in this sumptuous, racy red. This is such a pretty and expressive wine.”

Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94 points
“Bright red. An exotically perfumed bouquet displays intense red fruit, potpourri and incense qualities. Spice and savory herb nuances build as the wine opens up. Bright and energetic in the mouth, offering densely packed and appealingly sweet raspberry liqueur, cherry and spicecake flavors that pick up a smoky mineral note on the back half. Plays power off of finesse deftly and finishes extremely long and floral, with sneaky, fine-grained tannins and a touch of exotic spices.”

“If you love the traditional side of Montalcino, Luigi Ananìa’s La Torre makes some of the best and most consistent wines you will find”
Azienda Agricola La Torre Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015 750ML ($69.95) $52.50 special
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95+ points
“If you love the traditional side of Montalcino, Luigi Ananìa’s La Torre makes some of the best and most consistent wines you will find. Their 2015 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a quality of fruit that is both plump and succulent, and this is very much a characteristic of the 2015 vintage. However, the house style is extremely precise and focused. It starts off slowly, revealing itself in small steps before coming into full bloom. The wide aromatic span of the wine should become even more prominent with three or four more years of cellar age. This wine does a nice job of matching the acidity of Sangiovese to the generous fruit of the warm 2015 vintage. Some 13,000 bottles will be released in March 2020.”

The pride of Corsica.
Domaine Comte Abbatucci Ajaccio Faustine Blanc, Corsica 2017 750ML ($49.95) $29 special
Case-12 Domaine Comte Abbatucci Ajaccio Faustine Blanc, Corsica 2017 750ML ($599.95) $319 special (that’s only $26.58/bottle!)
Importer Note
“Summing up Jean-Charles Abbatucci’s contagious energy in just a few lines is virtually impossible. The best way to experience it is to stand in his vineyards in central Corsica and feel it radiate through your body from the ground up. Luckily, that energy finds its way into every bottle he makes, and this gentle, breezy white from old-vine Vermentinu delivers it without compromise each sip is like a gust of warm Mediterranean air flooding your senses with a perfume of flowers and wild maquis.”

If you love Pinot rosé from the Willamette Valley, you owe it to yourself to try the original.
Domaine Collotte Marsannay Rosé, Côte de Nuits 2019 750ML ($24.95) $19 special
Importer note
“Pinot Noir from clay & limestone soils. Sustainable. Ripe pomegranate, strawberries and raspberries. Medium body.”
VinopolNote: Marsannay is the only village in Burgundy that permits rosé bottled under its AOC.  As you might expect, the rosé from the village is outstanding stuff and Domaine Collotte’s offers excellent value (just like their reds, for what that’s worth).  Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the Marsannay rosé shows the dry and serious side of the genre, while managing to be delicious and fresh at the same time.  If you love Pinot rosé from the Willamette Valley, you owe it to yourself to try the original.

Old vine red Burgundy for under $30!
Domaine Forey Père et Fils Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Burgundy 2017 750ML ($34.95) $29 special
Neal Rosenthal
“The 40-to-60-year-old vines of Forey’s Bourgogne Rouge—produced from various parcels in Nuits and Vosne—typically yield a wine of impressive depth for its category. Vinified with 50% whole clusters and aged in 10% new 500-liter demi-muids, this 2017 is a vibrant, lip-smacking example of pure Pinot Noir pleasure, offering beaming red fruits and an attractive dusting of spices in its juicy and easygoing personality.”
Burghound “An attractively fresh and softly oaked nose reflects notes of a variety of red berries and a healthy dose of earth that can also be found on the nicely detailed and vibrant flavors that are refreshing, persistent and reasonably complex on the crunchy finish. This delicious effort should drink well early on.”

“Effortlessly drinkable”
Bow & Arrow Rhinestone Red, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($29.95) $20.90 special
Case-12 Bow & Arrow Rhinestone Red, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($319.95) $228 special
Winery note
“To understand Rhinestones we have to talk about the Cheverny region of France’s Loire Valley where, by law, the red wines must be a blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir.  We follow this stricture with all the Pinot and Gamay fruit we source from Johan Vineyard.  The blend is determined by nature and vintage.  Aged in a mixture of concrete and old barriques, this wine is the flagship of the Bow & Arrow operation and communicates what we’re about as much as anything we make.  Effortlessly drinkable but rewards detective work if you’re in the mood.”

10% Off New Bouland Beaujolais

Daniel Bouland makes gutsy wines from old vines in the heart of Beaujolais premier appellations. You often hear that they’re traditionally made and, although that’s true, it doesn’t begin to describe what makes the wines unique. These are wines that recall what Beaujolais would have been like before industrial farming and certainly before industrial winemaking. They’re special, powerful and age-worthy.

From a winemaking perspective, the closest comparison to what Daniel Bouland is doing is probably Domaine Dujac. The cross-regional comparison probably violates some sort of law of wine-writing, but when you look at what Bouland does with his grapes, it makes sense. There’s almost exclusively whole cluster fermentation at both houses and Bouland’s wine show as muscular and robust—capable of very long aging and transformation into profound wines.

The difference, of course, is that working with Gamay, Bouland’s wines are more immediately drinkable than anything from Dujac (Bouland also doesn’t use new oak on his wines). And the prices are far below what top Burgundy can command. Young, the Bouland bottles show both intense fruit and structure—you wouldn’t necessarily think to drink Beaujolais with steak, but these are incredible pairings with even very hearty foods -especially since Gamay has a zesty freshness to it that can lighten, nay elevate, any meal.

We’re offering 10% off our listed prices for any mix of 3 or more bottles of 2019 Daniel Bouland Beaujolais until Sunday night!

Daniel Bouland Chiroubles Chatenay, Beaujolais 2019 750ML ($37.95) $33 Displayed Price, $29.70 Subscriber Special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92 points
“Exuberant aromas of raspberries, blackberries and cherries introduce the 2019 Chiroubles Chatenay, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that’s round and enveloping, with a charming core of fruit and melting, delicately powdery tannins. It will drink well young.”

William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2019 Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes Cailloux is once again quite structured this year, though it’s not as brooding and muscular as its 2018 counterpart. Revealing aromas of raspberries, cherries, burning embers and sweet soil tones, it’s medium to full-bodied, with a deep core of fruit, lively acids and a chassis of fine but abundant tannins.”

William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2019 Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes Sable is excellent, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, plums, violets and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and muscular, built around succulent acids and powdery tannins, it’s elegantly structured and built to age, even if it’s charming enough to be enjoyed young—the 2011 vintage from my own cellar is drinking brilliantly.”

“Offering up aromas of red plums, berries, raw cocoa and spices, the 2019 Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Melanie is medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with a fleshy core of fruit, melting tannins and lively acids. Bright and charming, it’s produced from a south-facing site near Château Thivin.”

Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue Cailloux, Beaujolais 2019 750ML ($41.95) $38 Displayed Price, $34.20 Subscriber Special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Derived from older vines in rockier soils, the 2019 Morgon Bellevue Cailloux is even more sensuous and textural than its Sable counterpart. Mingling notions of raspberries and plums with hints of rose petals and spices, it’s medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, its powdery tannins almost entirely cloaked in succulent, perfumed fruit.”

Daniel Bouland Morgon Les Delys, Beaujolais 2019 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 Displayed Price, $37.71 Subscriber Special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2019 Morgon Les Delys Vignes plantées en 1926 has turned out brilliantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of ripe cherries, blackberries, strawberries, sweet soil tones and spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it’s seamless and multidimensional, and with striking concentration, succulent acids and powdery tannins, it’s long and penetrating. While this is carrying less puppy fat than the 2018 at the same age, it’s still quite a demonstrative, fruit-driven vintage of Les Delys, and while it will be long-lived, it can also be approached young.”

Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue Sable, Beaujolais 2019 750ML ($41.95) $36 Displayed Price, $32.40 Subscriber Special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93 points
“The 2019 Morgon Bellevue Sable is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, cherries, orange rind and plums. Medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, it’s bright and fleshy, with powdery tannins and a generous core of fruit, girdled by lively acids. Bottled only a week before I tasted it, I suspect it will perform even better with six months’ bottle age. As readers will remember, this cuvée comes from younger vines, planted on Viala rootstock in sandy soils—as the “Sable” newly added to its label makes clear.”
