New Releases from Evesham Wood

Suzanne:
Thirty years ago, Russ Raney founded Evesham Wood and planted the small, dry-farmed and certified organic estate vineyard. Erin Nuccio took over the estate over ten years ago after working for and with Russ at the estate, founding his own original label (Haden Fig) during that time. Under Erin’s stewardship, the already topnotch winery has continued to improve, showcasing the profound terroir of the land. We’re honored to stock his lineup from the pristinely poised Willamette Valley up to the deeply moving estate barrel selection, Cuvee J. As a founding member of the Deep Roots Coalition (which includes other members such as Cameron, Crowley, Eyrie, Goodfellow, and Sequitur), the dedication to perfection and care for the land shows through. These are graceful, liner wines that will astound for years, especially from such a wildly delicious vintage as 2019. You deserve to stock your cellar with these – I certainly do.

Newly Arrived & In Stock Now from Evesham Wood:

Evesham Wood Cuvee J Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2019 750ML ($69.95) $51.90 special
Winery note
“[2017 vintage] One of the greatest characteristics Russ finds in our proprietary yeast that he “isolated” from a bottle of 1986 Jayer Echezeaux is the velvety texture it imparts on the wines.  While we use that yeast in every Pinot Noir we make, the texture it imparts is particularly notable in this wine. Elegant while also concentrated and powerful.  Berries, plum and sage with hints of toasty oak with great length on the finish.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Evesham Wood Illahe Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
Winery note
“Illahe Vineyard was purchased in 1999 and first planted in 2001 with 22 acres of pinot noir. Today it is a 52-acre vineyard with seven varieties and 44 acres of pinot noir. When it is completely planted, they will have 60 acres under vine. Illahe is a warm site that experiences slightly earlier budbreak and flowering than many other vineyards in the Willamette Valley. Two reasons for this are the southerly aspect of the vineyard and the moderate elevation. The vineyard also has excellent drainage during cold snaps, and it’s just to the south of the Van Duzer winds which begin in the late summer that cool other vineyards in the evening, slowing maturity.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Evesham Wood Le Puits Sec Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2019 750ML ($47.95) $34.50 special
Winery note
“Once again our quarter acre of Chardonnay at the very top of Le Puits Sec only gave us a single barrel of wine. It was barrel-fermented in neutral oak and allowed to complete its full malo-lactic conversion. Following the malos we racked the wine clean and held it in barrel for an additional 12 months. While not as broad as the 2018, there is a touch more fruit—more quince than apple— than the 2017 and a firm mineral texture.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Evesham Wood Le Puits Sec Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2019 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Winery note
“Le Puits Sec, the gently sloping, east-facing vineyard is tightly-spaced and nestled on a low terrace (300-420 ft. elevation) on the eastern side of the Eola-Amity Hills ridge. This area, known locally as “Spring Valley”, has already proven to have one of Oregon’s best micro-climates for the production of fine wines from Burgundian and Alsatian varieties. It is here that the rather shallow volcanic basalt soils allow us to achieve the low yields we seek for wines of great intensity and complexity. As well, it is the uniqueness of this “terroir” that gives Le Puits Sec wines their signature.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Evesham Wood Temperance Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2019 750ML ($49.95) $36 special
Winery note
“Temperance Hill Vineyard is a 100-acre certified organic vineyard made up of roughly 20 different blocks of wine grapes. The site itself is 200 acres in the west Eola Hills, just west of Salem, Oregon. It has an elevation range of 660 to 860 feet making it a cool, late site; excellent growing conditions for Pinot Noir. The soils are predominantly Nekia, Rittner and Jory. The site is thought to be the remnants of an ancient volcano and grapes are planted on many different slopes with varying exposures.”

Avennia Arnaut Boushey Vineyard Syrah, Yakima Valley 2018 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 29 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“The 2018 Syrah Arnaut Boushey Vineyard is all varietal and was 85% destemmed and aged 16 months in 15% new French oak. Offering an Hermitage-like meatiness as well as lots of black and blue fruits, full-bodied richness, a round, expansive texture, and beautiful violet, floral, and gamey aromas and flavors, it’s brilliant, concentrated red delivering notable ripeness as well as a plenty of underlying structure and tannins. Again, a comparison to a top Hermitage comes closest in comparison. Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 10-15 years.”
Wine Enthusiast 96 points “Cellar Selection. Coming from one of the state’s top Syrah vineyards, the aromas explode from the glass, with notes of iron, bacon, earth and whiffs of orange peel along with blue and black fruit. Dense, intense rich fruit and savory flavors follow, showing weight and volume. But it’s the exquisite balance that most impresses on this standout wine. Best after 2024. -Sean P. Sullivan”

Scott Frank seems to have cracked the code to do two things that are nearly impossible for other Oregon wineries. First, he makes wines that are vibrant, fresh and delicious in a truly old-world fashion. As a result, the wines (especially the wines we’re featuring today) can be compulsively drinkable. The other major puzzle that Scott seems to have cracked is affordability. We often see wines from the U.S. marketed as ‘daily drinkers’, but priced at $35+, well north of a comparable wine from Europe. Scott Frank’s pricing seems free of ego, and we are all happy to reap the rewards of his unconventional approach.

Bow & Arrow Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-12 Bow & Arrow Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($249.95) $239 special (that’s only $19.92/bottle!)
Winemaker Note
“While this ethos of “wine for the people” infuses the entire posture at Bow & Arrow, it’s this wine, the Willamette Valley Pinot in particular, that serves as our proof of concept.  You can make, in the Willamette Valley, a Pinot Noir sourced from Biodynamic and Organic fruit that is lovingly and naturally tended to form start to finish AND sell it at a price that nearly anyone can glass pour. Assembled mainly from Johan Vineyard, Walnut Ridge and Hughes Hollow fruit, this wine was handled no differently than our single vineyard, top priced Pinot Noir.  Tasted blind I imagine it would hang tough with any line-up of Oregon Pinots of any price or pedigree.  (“I humbly submit” keeps getting auto-corrected to this hubristic nonsense.  I’m sorry.)”

Luscious tart cherry and cream. A vibrant rosé with plenty of stuffing to carry you through the fall.

Brick House Intentional Rosé of Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2020 750ML ($39.95) $28 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Winery note
“With an eye toward Provence, we set out to make our first “Intentional” Rosé of Pinot Noir. Picked early from young Pinot Noir vines then lightly pressed, our rosé was aged half in stainless steel and half in neutral barrels. Beckoning the warmer days ahead, floral and sea breeze aromas join with a zingy palate of yuzu, white pear and watermelon. Balanced with a hint of sweetness, this wine intends to bring the flavors of summer to your glass. Our intention: to quench, beguile & delight!”
Region: Ribbon Ridge, Oregon. Biodynamic.

Originally planted by the Corinthians in the 7th century, the Roussillon is famous for its almost constant sunshine, warm temperatures, refreshing breeze and spectacular vistas of the Mediterranean Sea and amphitheater of mountains. These elements converge to make it a veritable paradise, and exceptional terroir for wine. The best sites have often been cultivated since the Roman Empire, and oftentimes still feature the original stone terraces made by them to prevent erosion. Domaine Lafage is lucky enough to have one of these sites, with the oldest vines being over 80 years old. Comprised of Grenache Noir and its mutation Grenache Gris (which only occurs naturally when the vine reaches 50-60 years of age) with a sprinkling of younger Mourvèdre vines, this is a quintessential Roussillon rosé. With a flavor profile that brings to mind apricots, peaches and river rock minerality, the sites proximity to the sea is evident in the glass with a refreshing salinity that is reminiscent of ocean air accentuated by oregano blossom, wormwood and marmalade.

Domaine Lafage Miraflors Rosé, Cotes du Roussillon 2020 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 91 points
“White peach, orange blossom, and white flower notes emerge from the 2020 Miraflors. It’s another clean, balanced, beautiful effort with bright acidity and a clean, dry finish.”
Eric Solomon Imports note “Mourvedre, Grenache Gris, Grenache Practicing Organic 80 yr old vines. Light Pink-colored with beautiful white peach, orange zest and salty sea breeze aromas and flabros in its vibrant, crisp profile. Pure and vibrant as it gets, a classic, provencal-style beauty.”

Yohan Lardy

“Young producer, son of Lucien Lardy, Yohan started his estate in Moulin a Vent in 2012 in the lieu-dit “Les Michelon” with 5 acres of old vines planted in 1903, 1911 and 1950 on red granite sandy soil with seams of manganese (iron mineral). Organic farming. Cold soak, fermentation under native yeasts, and aging in neutral oak barrels for 9 months before bottling.” –Importer note

“Saturated magenta. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe, spice-tinged red and dark berries, licorice, violet and smoky minerals. Palate-staining black raspberry, bitter cherry, blueberry, floral pastille and succulent herb flavors turn sweeter as the wine opens up. Shows impressive power and sharp definition on the subtly tannic finish, which leaves cherry pit, allspice and floral notes behind.”
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “Cellar Selection. Exceptional in its density, this wine comes from 116-year-old vines that yield small berries with concentration. The wine is dark and firm, with a great structure, packed black fruits and spice from the wood aging. Drink from 2023. -Roger Voss”

“Deep ruby. Dark berries, cherry pit, candied licorice, baking spices and a hint of potpourri on the fragrant nose. Sappy, well-delineated black and blue fruit flavors show bright mineral lift and turn sweeter through the back half. In an ample but energetic style, finishing velvety and long, with a repeating cherry note and just a hint of fine-grained tannins.”

Domaine Pascal Aufranc

“Pascal Aufranc founded his estate in 1990 with only 6 acres of 1939 planted old vines located on the top of the Remont hill in the Cru Chenas. It is a very insolated vineyard surrounded by woods and open fields, planted on sandy granitic soils delivering the quintessence of the “gamay” grape. Vinified under carbonic style in cement vats to keep its freshness and juiciness.” –Importer note

Domaine Pascal Aufranc Chenas Vignes de 1939, Beaujolais 2019 750ML ($21.95) $19 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 93 points
“Vivid ruby. Powerful black and blue fruit aromas show sharp clarity and complementary smoky mineral and spice flourishes. Chewy and energetic in style, offering concentrated boysenberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors and a touch of dark chocolate. Conveys both depth and energy and finishes with building tannins and a repeating blue fruit note.”
Wine & Spirits 91 points “Pascal Aufranc farms a parcel of ancient vines at the border of the forest in Chénas, providing a wine with intriguing earthiness, its tannins powerful and gripping against the equally intense black-raspberry fruit. It’s saturated, firm and substantial, a wine for steak or for the cellar.”

Domaine Jean-Michel Dupre

“The family Dupre practice poly-farming in the Ardillats in Beaujolais since 5th generations. Jean Michel Dupre took over the estate in the 90’s and specialized in winemaking with the addition of the Cru Morgon in 2005 in his production. All his vines planted in 1911 – 1918 – 1940 – 1948 – 1935 are vinified and bottled separately to express the singularity of its terroir and vineyard.” – Importer note

Wine Enthusiast 92 points
“Editor’s Choice. A condensed and structured wine from vines planted in 1935, this is dark and powerful. Tannins are right up front, partnering the big black fruits and rich juiciness. This wine will age and should not be drunk before 2022. -Roger Voss”

The Vignes de 1948 is only available in the French market… and Oregon!
Domaine Jean-Michel Dupre Regnie Vignes de 1948, Beaujolais 2019 750ML ($21.95) $16.60 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Winemaker note
“A vineyard perched above the village of Beaujeu, in the heart of Beaujolais and its old capital, is where I started from almost nothing: a farm and vineyard of only 2 hectares left by my father. When the question of succession arose my attraction to the vine and wine was clear. So I converted old farm buildings into a winery and went in search of well-located plots in Beaujolais, Beaujolais Villages, Morgon, and Régnié. All of these years later I am still hard at work tirelessly and with a great vigor thanks to the passion for a job well done, it’s what motivates me everyday.”

Domaine Pascal Berthier

“Pascal Berthier is an artisan-vigneron located in the villages of Saint-Amour in northern Beaujolais, at the limit of Burgundy. Saint-Amour is the second smallest Crus Beaujolais. Terroir is composed of clay and silt, giving birth to a Gamay with more concentration and a lot of cherry and stone fruits….” –Importer note

Domaine Pascal Berthier Saint-Amour ‘Esprit de Seduction’, Beaujolais 2019 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Wine & Spirits 93 points
“From a rocky parcel where the pink-granite bedrock comes to the surface, this wine has the vivid sensation of crushed stones. Its beautiful wild-strawberry flavors are brisk and bright, completely filling the granite tannins and seeming to gain their energy from the rock. This wine’s herbal notes, from rosemary to thyme and black pepper, take its gamey perfume toward duck confit, with which it would be delicious.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 92 points “Glistening ruby-red. Vibrant, spice-accented red fruits and candied flowers on the highly perfumed nose. Sappy and seamless in the mouth, where a spine of juicy acidity supports juicy boysenberry and raspberry preserve flavors. Shows very good energy and strong floral character on a persistent, subtly tannic finish that leaves sweet red fruit and smoky mineral notes behind.”

Robert Perroud

“The Perroud family in Beaujolais started to grow vines since 1789. Robert is now running the winery since 1990 and founded Terroirs Originels (collective of independent growers in Beaujolais) in 1997. The estate sold their wines to Jadot for several decades before selling their own bottling directly. Magic terroir located in the “saburins” lieu-dit characterized with “amethyst and iron” subsoil” –Importer note

Robert Perroud Brouilly L’Enfer des Balloquets, Beaujolais 2019 750ML ($24.95) $19.50 special, 12 bottles in stock now

“Vivid ruby. Spice-accented red and blue fruit and violet scents are complemented by incense and smoky mineral nuances. Sappy, penetrating black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors smoothly blend depth and energy and acquire an exotic spice nuance as the wine opens up. Closes long and appealingly sweet, with subtly gripping tannins and an echo of juicy blue fruit.”

I Fabbri’s Beautiful Tuscan Reds

Based in the tiny hamlet of Lamole, I Fabbri is committed to maintaining what’s special about their particular part of Tuscany—the goal is to exalt the local and the particular. As a result, their wines are from their beautiful estate property which is dotted with large groves of olives among their rolling hills. Aside from a small amount of Merlot (which is delicious and recently arrived), they work exclusively with Sangiovese and Canaiolo—Tuscan through and through.

We had the opportunity to taste through the wines earlier this year and were very impressed. Elegant, pure and classical, they’re old-school representations of Chianti and outrageous values. From their entry level Chianti to their Riserva and Gran Selezione, these are wines that over-deliver classic character—stock up accordingly.

Mufatto:

Magical Mountain Malbec!

You’ve had Argentine Malbec before, but have you had a single-vineyard expression from the “Grand Cru” of the country? The Gualtallary region is famous for her combination of gravel, chalk and layers of prehistoric sand all knit together by exceptionally high elevation (5100 feet above sea level). These factors converge to create wines of incredible depth and power, with a steely backbone of acidity thanks to excruciatingly cold nights. These marginal conditions make for tiny yields, with only 150 cases being made in the entire vintage by Mufatto.

Farming organically and using 100% whole clusters, the Mufatto family has made a powerful yet restrained work of art. With a whole spectrum of purple and black fruits, spice, botanicals with an ever present mineral dust component; there’s an entire production going on from the first pour. Incredibly exuberant at this point in the bottle, there’s easily a decade’s worth of life ahead of it before peaking.

Newly Arrived:

Michelini i Mufatto ‘La Cautiva’ Malbec Gualtallary 2017 750ML ($89.95) $69 special, only 14 bottles available!
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The nose of the 2017 La Cautiva, a pure Gualtallary, has violets, flowers, herbs and spices and opens up as the wine sits in the glass, quite complex and layered. There are some more tannins than in 2016, possibly amplified by the chalky texture provided by the limestone-rich soils, incredibly juicy, with a big structure. Someone mentioned Cornas when we were tasting this wine… I later visited the zone and was amazed by the chalky soils where they are planning to build their winery and house. I think they have discovered a very special place here where they have planted more vines, next to the plot from where these grapes were sourced. I retasted the wine after seeing the soils, and my view was completely different.
Michael Schachner Wine Enthsiast 96 points “Editor’s Choice. Top of the mark, top of the heap is where this Malbec from Gualtallary in Tupungato ranks. Pure blackberry, cassis and plum aromas are impeccably clean and welcoming, while this feels squeaky fresh on the palate. Blackberry and dark chocolate flavors set up a minerally finish that plays out with fruity subtleties and stony infusions. Drink through 2026.”

New Review from Grapelive

Weingut Donnhoff Riesling Trocken, Nahe 2020 750ML ($26.95) $20.90 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Grapelive 91 points
“Donnhoff, based in Oberhäusen on the Nahe, is one of my favorites and I was excited to try this 2020 Estate Trocken to gain insights on the year which is getting quite a lot hype. It delivers the goods with steely crisp detail and depth way beyond its price point. This wine is always a joyous bargain and never disappoints. The Estate Trocken Riesling has an intense mineral dimension and loads of lively acidity, but still provides a pleasing depth of flavors and ripe fruit density. It shows bright citrus upfront and tangy stone fruit, with lime, green apple, tart apricot and zippy quince leading the way here and nicely accented by mouthwatering saline, wet stone, flinty spices, bitter herbs, white flowers and lemony verbena. This vintage one not to miss at this place and this “baby” Donnhoff will be your guilt free drinker, while you age the Cru bottlings.

“Donnhoff’s vineyard sites have a complex combination of soils that goes from classic slate to volcanic, with löss, quartzite, gravelly loams, limestone and sandstones. These soils give each wine their own personality and charm, with the Estate Trocken seeing a mix of sites to showcase the quality of the Donnhoff’s holdings. This refreshing and energy filled Dry Riesling will be great with a range of cuisine choices, though I would love it with oysters and briny dishes and it very enjoyable as a low alcohol sipper as well.

“The Dönnhoff are some of the world’s finest and they are certainly are the pride of Germany and their region. The family, as they note, arrived in the Nahe region over 200 years ago, and their modest farm has slowly evolved into a top wine estate. Helmut Dönnhoff was the first to bring international fame to this prestigious winery and has been making wine since 1966, and now Cornelius, his son, is the 4th generation to run this historic property and their amazing collection of VDP Grosse Lagen (Grand Cru) vineyards. Cornelius is one of top vignerons in Europe and his wines, which range from briskly dry, like this bone dry Estate Trocken to the heavenly luscious, from Spatlese to Eiswein, which rivals the world’s great sweet wines, are impeccable terroir driven masterpieces. To preserve laser-like focus and clarity in the wines, Cornelius, as he notes, presses the grapes as soon as possible after picking, all to deliver precision of form. Donnhoff’s wines are fermented in traditional German casks, both in classic 1200L stuckfass and the larger 2400L doppelstuck, as well as in stainless steel tank, as this Estate Trocken was, with spontaneous fermentation(s). Interestingly Donnhoff’s cellar has the capacity to hold all of its production entirely in stainless steel or in wood cask, which gives Cornelius the flexibility to promote each vintage’s character, allowing for the perfect élevage for any wine in the lineup. I am really excited for these 2020s and this was my first taste of the vintage from the Nahe and I was expecting a lot, and this wine exceeded my expectation!”

Producer Spotlight:

Doyard

“This Vertus domaine numbers among my favorite addresses on the Côte de Blancs, and the Doyard family’s vinous, incisive Champagnes deserve a place in any well-stocked cellar. Deep, concentrated and characterful, everything that bears the Doyard label is well worth serious attention.” -William Kelley, Wine Advocate

It goes without saying that fruit from the Côte des Blancs is among the most in demand in all of Champagne. Krug, Bollinger, Roederer, Piper-Heidsieck and Moët & Chandon all have holdings in the region, and often use it for their top offerings. With this much corporate influence from the Grand Marquises you’d be hard pressed to find grower-producers, and yet Doyard has been one since 1677! With family holdings in Vertus, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant, Oger, Avize and Aÿ you’d be hard pressed to find a better expression of Chardonnay anywhere in the world, let alone Champagne. This exceptional quality is a result of meticulous farming practices and exacting cellarwork. Organic standards, 45 year old average vine age, horse plowing and 4 years minimum on lees aging are only a few examples of these practices in action.

Beyond their cuvee’s the crown jewel of Doyard is their vintage, single-vineyard offering. One of the 36 “Clos” or walled vineyards of Champagne, Clos de l’Abbaye is barely over an acre and was planted in 1956. Not unlike Krug’s “Clos de Mensil” this is a benchmark champagne on it’s pedigree alone and promises a transcendent expression of Chardonnay. Vertus is famed for it’s pure limestone soils that produce saline, electric and long-lived expressions of Chardonnay. This is mirrored and elevated with Clos de l’Abbaye due to the vineyard’s position on the village’s hill, and also delivers additional fruit notes as a result of the increased ripeness.

Doyard Clos de l’Abbaye Premier Cru Extra Brut 2013 750ML ($149.95) $125 special, 1 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 96+ points
“Disgorged in March 2019 with two grams per liter dosage, the 2013 Extra-Brut Premier Cru Clos de l’Abbaye is brilliant, mingling notes of citrus oil, peach and pear with hints of wheat toast and walnuts in an incipiently complex bouquet. Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, the vintage’s racy acid spine is cloaked in a textural, enveloping core of fruit, concluding with a long and resonant finish. This derives from a walled 40-are plot of 60-year-old cordon-pruned vines just behind the winery in Vertus; only the first press juice is used. This is strikingly good Champagne.”
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Doyard’s 2013 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos de l’Abbaye 1er Cru is a gorgeous, expressive Champagne that captures all the pedigree of this great vintage. Ample and creamy on the palate, with tremendous resonance, the 2013 has so much to offer. All the best qualities of Doyard house style come through loud and clear. The 2013 was vinified in neutral French oak barrels and spent 48 months on the lees.”

Doyard Clos de l’Abbaye Premier Cru Extra Brut 2014 750ML ($149.95) $125 special, 5 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Disgorged in May 2020 with 2.4 grams per liter dosage, the 2014 Extra-Brut Premier Cru Clos de l’Abbaye is brilliant, unwinding to reveal notes of citrus oil, crisp Anjou pear, mandarin orange, pomelo, walnuts and fresh pastry. Full-bodied, vinous and layered, it’s deep and concentrated, framed by racy acids and chalky structuring dry extract. It’s a serious, muscular Champagne that’s long and intense. As usual, this cuvée derives from a walled 0.4-hectare plot of 60-year-old cordon-pruned vines just behind the winery in Vertus, and only the first and second “serres” of the press are used.”
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2014 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos de l’Abbaye 1er Cru is positively stellar. Bright and chiseled in feel, the 2014 has more than enough depth to fill out the layers. Tangerine, spice, mint, pear and pastry are some of the many aromas and flavors that grace the 2014. The 2014 is simply exquisite and a real pleasure to taste. Don’t miss it. A wine of real distinction. I love the energy and vibrancy here.”

William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95+ points
“The 2013 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru has also turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with notes of citrus oil, peach, white flowers and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and complete, it’s taut and chiseled, with serious reserves of concentration and a long, mineral finish. Disgorged in spring 2021, while its quality is apparent, this is predictably a little introverted out of the gates, so I look forward to revisiting it later this year.”

Doyard ‘Revolution’ Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Non-Dose NV 750ML ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Based on the 2014 vintage and disgorged in March 2020 without dosage, the latest rendition of Doyard’s NV Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Non Dosé Révolution offers up aromas of lemon oil, white flowers, mandarin, golden orchard fruit and buttered toast. Full-bodied, layered and muscular, it’s tangy and incisive, with a satiny attack that segues into a generous core of fruit, concluding with a long, mouthwatering finish.”

“The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Vendémiaire (2014 base) Doyard’s latest release. It was disgorged in February 2020 with four grams per liter dosage after 89 months on the lees. Wafting from the glass with aromas of honeycomb, yellow orchard fruit, dried citrus peel, warm bread and toasted almonds. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy but incisive, it’s elegantly layered and racy, with a pinpoint mousse and a long, sapid finish.”

Collector’s Corner:

Frankly Fantastic Fourrier

Domaine Fourrier makes some of the most captivating wines in Burgundy and has for a number of generations. To Burgophiles, this isn’t much of a claim—the wines that Jean-Marie has produced since taking over from his father have become hot tickets in the Burgundy world. If you aren’t familiar, though, these are wines to put on your radar. Fourrier’s style is heavily influenced by his time working under Henri Jayer and Domaine Drouhin and the wines show this.

When young they’re among the most impressive in Burgundy, combining succulent fruit with minerality and a complexity that’s nearly unmatched in newly released wines. Jean-Marie Fourrier, the scion and current winemaker says that “Oak is for slow breathing of the wine, not for taste” and the wines show that in their judicious presentation of oak.

They improve with age, as well, though we’ve always had a hard time keeping our hands off of the lower-tier wines in the first five years after the vintage. Fourrier works exclusively with old massale vineyards (anything from vines younger than 30 years is sold off) and that sort of soul really makes it into the bottle. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the house works with some of the oldest vines in the appellation, with some of their holdings being planted as far back as 111 years ago. We only have a handful of his bottles left in house, with these being some of the rarest items in our inventory.

Jean-Marie Fourrier Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cote de Nuits 2015 750ML ($399.95) $299 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 92-94 points
“The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is the first release from the estate (on the negociant side). It has a slightly smudged but pure kirsch, orange blossom and strawberry-scented bouquet that gains more delineation with aeration in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp red cherry and strawberry fruit with a touch of spice on the composed and elegant finish. This is a comely Charmes-Chambertin that is certain to be seductive over the next 15-20 years.”
Burghound 90-93 points “A background application of wood sets off distinctly earthy, forest floor and humus-infused plum and dark currant aromas. There is a really lovely mouth feel to the caressing, round and vibrant flavors that possess fine richness and persistence if not quite the same complexity or persistence. Even so, this is certainly a quality effort.”

Domaine Fourrier Clos Saint-Jacques Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2008 750ML ($699.95) $599 special, 1 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 96 points
“The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques engages all of the senses with its cool, mineral-laced fruit and expressive bouquet. This shows marvelous tension and energy, not to mention fabulous overall balance. It could not be more different in style than the 2009 tasted alongside it. Both are fabulous, though. The 2008 is one of the more backward wines of the vintage and will require considerable patience.”

Domaine Fourrier Clos Saint-Jacques Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2014 750ML ($699.95) $599 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 94 points
“Healthy medium red. Sexy, complex aromas of strawberry, crushed stone and rose petal convey a captivating combe coolness. Wonderfully concentrated and bright, combining classic 2014 salty minerality with superb fruit intensity. Boasts the kind of restrained generosity of fruit that reminds me of the ’99s in the early going. A compelling, saline vin de terroir but not a powerhouse. The long, rising finish features very suave tannins.”
Wine Advocate 93 points “Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Jean-Marie Fourrier’s 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques (labelled with “Vieilles Vignes”) has a very pure bouquet, almost coulis-like fruit, dark cherries intermingling with blueberry and light marmalade scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity, quite sensual in the mouth with good depth on the finish. Perhaps what it is missing is that peacock’s tail—it sort of ends in the wrong key. There is great potential here though not best in the (Clos Saint-Jacques) show this year. Like a television with its contrast turned up a bit too high when compared to its peers. Tasted September 2017.”

Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux Vieilles Vignes Cote de Nuits 2008 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 4 bottles in stock now
David Schildknecht-Wine Advocate 89 points
“Fourrier’s 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux (from nearly 90 year-old vines) is intensely scented with kirsch, herbs, and sea spray, which adumbrate its bright, saline, firm but not hard or angular palate impression. Strong cherry pit, stone, and charred meat notes lend this energetic but athletically lean and bright Gevrey a hint of austerity, but it has me salivating uncontrollably. For those who like the style and pair the wine creatively, this should give plenty of pleasure over at least the next 6-8 years, though as Fourrier is eager to concur with me, following the course of 2008s in bottle is bound to mean venturing into relatively uncharted territory.”

Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux Vieilles Vignes Cote de Nuits 2013 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Burghound 89-91 points
“Outstanding Top Value. An expressive nose of relatively high-toned red currant, floral and warm earth scents precedes the equally refined and delineated middle weight flavors that culminate in a balanced, complex and beautifully persistent finish. This is notably finer than the old vines cuvée if not quite a long or concentrated. Still this is lovely and also worth your consideration as it should drink reasonably well young.”

“Like many of the Fourrier holdings, this hails from the Brochon side of the village and shows corresponding zip and acidity. As ever, the 20% new oak is deftly handled, complementing the scented tobacco pouch and wild strawberry aromas and flavours.”

Domaine Fourrier Les Goulots Vieilles Vignes Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2016 750ML ($299.95) $219 special, 1 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 93 points
“Normally we will taste Goulots ahead of Champeaux in the lineup chez Fourrier, but I am guessing that the idea was to show the two Gevrey premier crus that escaped frost damage first, followed by the crus higher up on the Combe de Lavaut, where yields were off by an average of thirty percent. Champeaux lies right below Goulots on the slope and the 2016 here is an outstanding wine in the making, delivering a fine nose of red and black cherries, dark chocolate, grilled meats, a lovely base of soil, a touch of fresh herbs, woodsmoke and spicy new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with a sappy core, excellent soil signature, fine-grained tannins and a long, vibrant and nascently complex finish. A beautiful bottle in the making. 2028-2060.”
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 91-93 points “Good bright-medium red. Tight, dark aromas of black fruits and licorice pastille lifted by a whiff of cranberry. Ripe and broad, but with terrific inner-mouth floral lift and a rocky pungency. Tannins are fully ripe and fine-grained. Offers a rather exhilarating–and uncommon–combination of cooler flavors and full phenolic ripeness. This wine comes from a very cool, east-facing site planted on rock, which had difficulty ripening its fruit prior to global warming. A tighter, more intellectual style than the Champeaux: Fourrier loves the Goulots with sushi, while he’d pair the Champeaux with a rib-eye steak.”

Domaine Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieille Vigne Cote de Nuits 2014 750ML ($899.95) $799 special, 1 bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 94-96 points
“The 2014 Griottes Chambertin Grand Cru has a very intense bouquet with maraschino, blueberry and violets blossoming in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black fruit, blueberry and a hint of balsamic, leading to a quite a structured and dense finish that just needs a touch more finesse. I think that will develop with time. Superb.”
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 94+ points “Good medium red. Strawberry and rose petal on the nose. At once dense and brisk, displaying a penetrating quality to its seamless, fine-grained flavors of red fruits and orange zest. Wonderfully taut and energetic but also fine-grained and suave. Less saline today than the Clos Saint-Jacques but boasts terrific fruit and mineral extension on the long, savory finish.”

Domaine Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieille Vigne Cote de Nuits 2015 750ML ($999.95) $899 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 94-96 points
“Good deep red. Dark and slightly wild on the nose but inexpressive today. Shows the added concentration and weight of the hot vintage but less of the coolness of the vineyards exposed to the Combe de Lavaut. Flavors of purple and black fruits and crushed rock hint at violet but can’t quite match the sheer floral éclat of the Clos Saint-Jacques. This wine had been racked more recently than most of the rest and was tighter as a result. Although it’s less harmonious today, its powerful spine of acids and tannins should ensure a long and graceful evolution in bottle.”

Domaine Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieille Vigne, Cote de Nuits 2016 750ML ($1,499.95) $1,199 special, 1 bottle in stock now
John Gilman 96 points
“The 2016 Griotte-Chambertin from Domaine Fourrier is a great wine in the making. The bouquet is pure, sappy and quite expressive, but the palate is still on the primary side and the wine will deserve a fully twelve to fourteen years in the cellar to start to properly stir from hibernation. The nose is a superb blend of red and black cherries, gamebird, a very complex base of chalky soil tones, woodsmoke, spicy oak, mustard seed and a pungent topnote of roses. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and already quite velvety on the attack, with a sappy core, lovely transparency and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, tangy, refined and laser-like focus. There will be plenty of temptation to drink this on the earlier side, unless it closes up significantly after bottling, but it would be crime to really touch a bottle before at least 2030! 2030-2100.”
Decanter 95 points “The Griotte is beautiful in 2016, the inherent elegance of the vineyard synthesising perfectly with Fourrier’s limpid style. Aromas of cherry, raspberry, rose petal and liquorice mingle with subtle nuances of rich soil, introducing a full-bodied, silky wine, its fine, chalky tannins cloaked in a deep and ample core of pure, glossy and succulent fruit. This should be very special with some bottle age.Drinking Window 2026 – 2050.”

Jean-Marie Fourrier Latricieres-Chambertin Vieille Vigne Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits  2013 750ML ($369.95) $319 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Burghound 91-94 points
“A very cool and restrained nose is all but mute at present though determined swirling eventually coaxes notes of wet stone, red currant, humus and underbrush to reveal themselves. There is outstanding intensity to the beautifully well-delineated medium-bodied flavors that are constructed on a base of almost pungent minerality before terminating in a wonderfully complex, persistent and impeccably well-balanced finish. There is plenty of the typical austerity that young Latricières usually displays and this classy effort will need a minimum of several years of cellar time and reward at least 15.”

Jean-Marie Fourrier Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieille Vigne, Cote de Nuits 2014 750ML ($359.95) $279 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Burghound 91-94 points
“Here the grudging nose only reluctantly gives up its much gamier aromas of red berries, earth and soft floral nuances. There is excellent intensity to the powerful and muscular flavors that pack plenty of punch as well as solid mid-palate density before culminating in a sleek and stony finish that delivers fine depth and outstanding length. This is really quite good but note well that it’s going to require plenty of cellar time first.”

Jean-Marie Fourrier Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieille Vigne, Cote de Nuits 2015 750ML ($399.95) $299 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Burghound 90-92 points
“A very ripe nose is composed by liqueur-like dark berry fruit, earth and animale scents. The sleek, supple and delicious middle weight plus flavors possess good muscle on the solidly complex if marked rustic finale where a hint of bitter cherry arises.”
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 90-92 points “The 2015 Mazoyeres Chambertin Grand Cru has a lifted bouquet with dark cherry and mulberry scents, just a little loose-knit at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, a little uncouth at the moment (especially compared to the Charmes-Chambertin), but there is good grip on the finish. Give this 4-5 years to mellow.”

Domaine Fourrier Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Solon Vieilles Vignes, Cote de Nuits 2009 750ML ($219.95) $179 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni 89+ points
“The 2009 Morey St. Denis Clos Solon is classy and elegant. Bright red fruits melt into flowers as this inviting, graceful wine opens up in the glass. Though understated, there is plenty of underlying material here. The finish is long and substantial. This is a terrific entry-level Burgundy. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2024.”
Stephen Tanzer 89 points “Medium red. Raspberry and coffee on the very ripe nose. Wonderfully rich and thick but fresh, with a distinct oak influence (Fourrier uses about 20% new oak across the board to age his wines). Raspberry, mocha and smoke notes carry through on the rich finish, which shows slightly drying tannins. A substantial village offering.”

“A ripe and very fresh mix of red berries, warm earth and soft tea nuances leads to relatively full-bodied and delicious middle weight flavors that possess a suave and round mouth feel, all wrapped in a balanced and lingering finish. This is not especially complex at present yet the underlying material is present such that more will almost certainly develop.”

Domaine Fourrier Les Petits Vougeots Vieilles Vignes, Vougeot Premier Cru 2016 750ML ($399.95) $249 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 89-92 points
“Bright, moderately saturated medium red. Rather wild scents of crushed cherry stomp, flowers, medicinal herbs and minerals. Offers a lovely fine-grained texture and sweetness of fruit but still in a juicy style for all its ripeness. Very good for this cuvée but there are just three barrels of this juice from 0.34 hectare–or not much above 20 hectoliters per hectare. Savory and long on the aftertaste, with plenty of tannic support.”

“It’s really a Chambolle-Musigny,’ says Jean-Marie Fourrier of this Premier Cru located in a hollow just below the Musigny Grand Cru. East-facing, so a little cooler, it’s a site that has produced, a fine, detailed, racy Pinot Noir in 2018, with plenty of colour, sappy bramble and black cherry flavours, fine tannins and a fresh, balanced, tapering finish.”
