Bodegas Alvear

Bodegas Alvear is an established name in the D.O. Montilla-Moriles. A historic sherry bodega founded by Don Diego de Alvear in 1729, this is easily one of the oldest wineries in the area. For many years this region struggled to find its own identity next to sherry, but now they are specialists in Pedro Ximénez wines, especially older examples and single vintage bottles. Still controlled by the Alvear family, currently in the 8th generation, they produce what are widely considered some of the finest wines of DO Montilla-Morilles.

Alvear produces a wide variety of sherries, but the main focus is definitely Pedro Ximénez. Alvear has both solera matured P.X. (like the Solera 1830) and vintage examples (añadas). Since the late 1990’s they’re deliberately filling these separate vintage casks which are usually bottled after 3 to 5 years and are celbrated for their more youthful, fresher expression of Pedro Ximenez. Don’t miss out on this incredible 100-point treat!

Alvear Pedrox Ximenez de Anada 2011 375ML ($79.95) $47 special

Robert Parker 100 points “Alvear’s 2011 Pedro Ximenez de Anada is the most amazing Pedro Ximenez I have ever tasted. It may also be one of the first to be vintage-dated. The grapes were hand-harvested in September, then allowed to dry in the sunshine until they began fermentation, which is ultimately arrested by the addition of spirits. The wine spent six months in large American oak prior to being bottled. It is an amazing effort that looks like molasses. Notes of macerated figs, chocolate and caramelized tropical fruits emerge from this full-bodied, unctuously-textured wine. While sweet, it has enough acidity to balance out its richness. This astonishing 2011 Pedro Ximenez will last as long as any reader of this newsletter.”

Iconic Burgundy

Domaine Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2004 ($179.95) $149 special

Burghound 95 points “Stylistically, this closely resembles the Valmur with its ultra-elegant and pure aromas featuring white flowers, oyster shell and subtle spice notes that perfectly complement the round, powerful, rich and full-bodied flavors that coating the mouth and culminate in a saliva-inducing, incredibly intense finish that reminded me more than a little of a great Corton-Charlemagne. This just oozes minerality and the texture is minerally to the point of this resembling a block of stone. A great Les Clos”

Vinopolnotes- Chablis Grand Cru comes from vineyards in the commune along the right bank of the River Serein which waters the district. The Grand Cru Climats form a continuous band along the upper part of the valley from Bougros in the north-west to Blanchot in the south-east. The appellation Chablis Grand Cru is a single entity but divided between 7 ” Climats “, the names of which may appear on the labels. Les Clos is the largest and most widely known of the seven climats of the Chablis Grand Cru, usually credited as the best in the region, and it is widely believed that this was the first vineyard planted in Chablis. The name Les Clos is derived from the walls that originally surrounded the vineyard, and the area is famous for its perfect combination of southwest facing vines and well-draining, limestone-rich soils. With these ideal circumstances, Les Clos is known for wines of the finesse of the wine, its rich aromatics, and long term aging potential.

Domaine Faiveley Corton Clos des Cortons 2011($199.95) $149 special

Antonio Galloni 95 points “Faiveley’s 2011 Corton Clos des Corton is a fitting conclusion to this great night of wine and food. Intensely saline and pointed, the 2011 impresses for its pure energy and tension. The flavors are vibrant and impeccably delineated in a Burgundy that is all about finesse. This is a great showing from the Clos des Corton.”

Stephen Tanzer 94 points “Medium red.  Ineffable nose and palate offer red fruits, minerals, spices and flowers, complicated by game, earth and leather.  Sweet, concentrated and very intense, boasting outstanding density and a fine-grained texture, with salty minerality giving the wine a weightless impression that’s remarkable considering its density.  A strong tannic spine and brisk acidity energize and draw out the finish of this sharply delineated, pristine grand cru.”

Vinopolnotes- Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley is the only Grand Cru in Burgundy alongside Romanée-Conti to bear the name of its proprietor. After a long legal battle, led by Georges Faiveley, this appellation was confirmed as a lieux-dit by the Court of Appeal in 1937. Wholly owned by Faiveley, Clos des Cortons produces some of the most outstanding wines of all of the Corton Grand Cru. This unique 7-acre parcel sits on the northern extremity of the hill of Corton fairly high up the slope surrounded by the famous “Le Corton” parcel. The majority of the vineyard was planted between 1936 and 1967 with younger plantings up to 2002. Known for a silky texture, the wines are very reliable in every vintage and a trusted name in Burgundy.

Domaine Faiveley Chambertin Clos de Beze 2011 ($329.95) $249 special

Stephen Tanzer 94 (+?) points, Tim Atkins 97 points “Medium red.  Highly nuanced yet quite primary on the nose, offering scents of raspberry, underbrush, dried rose, ginger and smoky oak.  Juicy, saline and quite dry, with dark berry and strawberry flavors complicated by an earthy perfume.  Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and excellent length.  With 24 hours in the recorked bottle, this beauty showed a silkier texture and chewy, deep flavors of raspberry and spices that saturate the palate without leaving any impression of weight.  A great effort for the vintage.”ST

Vinopolnotes- This plot, which is very rich in limestone, existed before ‘Chambertin’ existed. In 640, the Duke Amalgaire gave lands to the Abbey of Bèze and the monks cleared a forest to plant vines. The name Chambertin originally applied to a single lieu-dit – the northern half of which was made into a walled vineyard, the Clos de Beze, and in the southern half laid the current Le Chambertin Grand Cru site. Such was the prestige of the wines from the ancient Le Chambertin vineyard that in 1847 its name was appended to that of the village (then named simply Gevrey), resulting in Gevrey-Chambertin. The upper slopes of the Grand Cru belt in Gevrey-Chambertin are currently dominated by the Clos-de-Beze and Le Chambertin.  Together, these two climats occupy 75 acres of the finest terroir in the commune and are collectively regarded not only as the most prestigious in Gevrey-Chambertin, but arguably the whole of Burgundy.

Follin-Arbelet Romanee St. Vivant 2009 ($499.95) $333 special

Burghound 92-94 points “A ripe and exuberantly spicy nose also features an expansive range of fruit aromas that include red, blue and black berries plus plum nuances. The rich, seductive and mouth coating flavors are underpinned by phenolically mature tannins and excellent length where a touch of menthol surfaces. If there is a nit, it seems that this does not have the same level of energy of the best in the range but at this stage of development, this could easily change.”

Vinopolnotes- Having grown up in Burgundy’s famous Côte d’Or, Franck Follin-Arbelet was always attracted to viticulture, his family long time vineyard owners but not winemakers. Franck Follin, who entered the wine world by earning a degree in viticulture, is the first member of his family to be fully involved in production from vine to bottle. Franck left a promising career to join his father-in-law, André Masson of the famous Latour family, and former director of the Hospices de Beaune , in the family domaine. Franck was lucky enough to inherit these vines that had long been in his wife’s family, located throughout Aloxe-Corton and the cherished Grand Crus of Corton Charlemagne and Romanee St. Vivant. The first commercial bottlings came in 1992 and he continues to make wines of purity and stature. All of his vines, including his top line Grand Cru Romanee St. Vivant, are tended by hand and respectfully protected from any form of insecticide or pesticide, each polished to show great individuality and purity.

The average listed price is 25% higher at $419 / bottle

Roche de Bellene Vosne-Romanee Malconsorts 2009 ($219.95) $179 special

Burghound 91-94 points “This is presently the spiciest of the three Vosne 1ers in the range which adds plenty of background nuance and complexity to the red currant, plum and cassis aromas. The earthy and relatively powerful big-bodied flavors possess excellent intensity and copious amounts of dry extract that coats the palate on the hugely long finish. Despite the youthful expressiveness presently being displayed, this is really quite a serious effort that I suspect will shut down for a good while as it’s clearly built to age.”

Vinopolnotes- Malconsorts, the southernmost 1er cru in Vosne-Romanée, is situated facing southeast right on the border with Nuits St. Georges. Considered by many to be an equal in quality to many of the surrounding Grand Crus, Malconsorts has seen a well-deserved rise in popularity and quality as more Burgundy producers flock to these under-appreciated vines. Directly to the south of the legendary La Tâche vineyard, wines from Malconsorts are said to have a richness comparable to their Grand Cru neighbor, the mid-slope vines reaching high concentration while still retaining age-worthy acidity.

Clos de Tart Grand Cru 2007 ($499.95) $249 special

Wine Spectator 94 points “Intense aromas of graphite and mineral make an immediate impact, with black cherry, black currant and spice flavors adding depth and dimension. This has concentration and a juicy texture, pushing the long, peppery aftertaste. Shows fine harmony and expression overall. Best from 2012 through 2024.”

Vinopolnotes- Lying on the southern extremity of Morey-Saint-Denis, Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy’s oldest walled vineyards. While the majority of Burgundy’s vineyards have had many owners over the years, Clos de Tart is an exception. Created in the 12th Century and given Grand Cru status in 1939, this monopole has been owned by the Momessin family since 1932, and is the largest of the five Grand Cru monopoles in Burgundy. A heralded vineyard, known for its consistent style thanks to single ownership, Clos de Tart is known for its high quality terroir, a combination of limestone and well-draining marl that provides wines with a balance of power and elegance.

(Issue #142; 2014)” 94 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): “The 2012 Dellchen Grosses Gewächs is a superb wine in the making, jumping from the glass in a youthfully complex mélange of grapefruit, tart orange, wild yeasts, complex slate tones, citrus peel and smoke. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and has laser-like focus, with a rock solid core, ripe acids and a very, very long, primary finish. This superb Grosses Gewächs will need a good six or seven years’ worth of bottle age to really blossom and come into its own, and it should prove to very long-lived. 2020-2045+. (Mar/Apr 2013)”

Dom Perignon Champagne Brut Plenitude P2 1998 ($429.95) $333 special

Wine Spectator 98 points “Offers precision and finely detailed form, powered by an expansive palate of flavor. The layers of ripe crushed blackberry and glazed apricot fruit complement the saline-tinged minerality and oyster shell notes, graced by hints of pastry, honeycomb and exotic spice. Mouthwatering and persistent on the zesty finish. Drink now through 2030.”

James Suckling 97 points “A P2 release indicating it has been matured to the 2nd Plenitude, the middle stage of Dom Perignon’s three-phase life as defined by Richard Geoffroy. This is a wine with some real tension between complexity and freshness that makes for incredibly engaging drinking. The nose offers up a little white peppery edge from the pinot; oyster shell saline freshness, red florals, sweet smelling woody spices and brioche, spiced biscuits and subottlee roasted coffee notes – impressively complex. The phenolics register on the palate as a discreetly mineral, saline character, there’s sorbet-like texture through the middle before finishing with comet-like line and length.”

Fleury Pere et Fils ‘Cepages Blancs’ Blanc de Blancs Brut Millesime, Champagne ($79.95) $69 special

Wine Advocate 93 points “Another gorgeous wine, the 2004 Brut Cepages Blancs (Chardonnay) is stunningly beautiful. Rich, deep and layered, the 2004 comes alive in the glass. Lemon, dried flowers and hazelnuts wrap around the palate as this complex, utterly beguiling wine shows off its considerable personality and pedigree. Chalky notes frame the finish. This is without question one of the very best wines I have ever tasted from Fleury.”WA

Weingut Josef Leitz Rudesheimer Klosterlay Riesling Kabinett, Rheingau 2012 ($18.95) $14 special

Terry Theise: “The `12 richness and weight gives a lot of middle to a wine that’s sometimes almost constricted by its Altoid mintiness; this really is the best vintage ever, loads of lemon and eucalyptus but with a dense doughy mirabelle cream and saltiness. Vinous and rich.”

Marie-Paule Dumazet Condrieu Cote Fournet ($69.95) $49 special

Robert Parker 95 points “Two monumental Condrieus from Dumazet include the 2010 Condrieu Cote Fournet, which reveals an extravagant style, with lavish concentration as well as copious notes of spring flowers, peach and apricot marmalade, honeysuckle, and hints of pineapple and crushed rocks. How wonderful it is to see this somewhat forgotten appellation enjoy such a profound vintage as 2010!”

Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2007 ($179.95) $119 special

Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino wraps around the palate with dark red fruit, licorice, anise and sweet herbs. Silky tannins frame the fruit as the wine shows off its breadth and volume. This is a very representative 2007 Brunello with generous fruit and an open, accessible personality. I don’t see the 2007 being a super long-term ager, but I doubt that will be much of an issue considering how delicious the wine is today. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.” AG

Lopez Heredia Rioja Bosconia Reserva 2003 ($37.95) $26 special

Stephen Tanzer 92 points “(80% tempranillo, 15% garnacha, 3% graciano and 2% mazuelo):  Medium red.  Ripe red fruit, flowers and spices on the nose, with a smoky nuance emerging with aeration; very fresh for this notoriously hot vintage.  Concentrated but not at all heavy, with intense red berry and floral pastille flavors and a deeper note of singed plum.  The finish is bright and high-pitched, with lingering cherry and raspberry flavors and a hint of candied licorice.”

Remelluri Rioja 2008 ($39.95) $33 special

Stephen Tanzer 92 points “(mostly tempranillo, with garnacha, graciano, viura and malvasia):  Ruby-red.  Redcurrant, cherry, rose pastille and spicecake on the highly perfumed nose and in the mouth.  Silky, sweet and penetrating, with slow-building tannins and excellent finishing cut and length.  A very successful wine for this difficult vintage, and it’s built to reward at least another ten years of aging.”

Jacopo Biondi-Santi Castello di Montepo Sassoalloro Toscana IGT 2009 ($39.95) $26.60 pre-arrival special

Case-12 Biondi-Santi Castello di Montepo Sassoalloro Toscana IGT 2009 ($399.95) $289 pre-arrival special, that’s only $24/bottle!

Wine Advocate 91 points “A landmark wine in the landscape of Italian enology, the 2009 Sassoalloro is a pure expression of the special Sangiovese Grosso clone BBS11 that the Biondi Santi family has safeguarded in the Tuscan territories of Montalcino and Scansano respectively. The 2009 vintage still needs time to flesh out and find its footing. Red rose, dried blackberry, moist clay and button mushroom all make subottlee appearances on the feminine bouquet. Firm structure is present to carry this wine forward over the years. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022. ” WA
