New Weekend – New Arrivals

OREGON
Belle Pente ‘Belle Pente Vineyard’ Chardonnay, Yamhill-Carlton District 2010 750ML ($29.95) $26.60 special
Winery note “Our 100% Estate Grown Chardonnay comes from a little 2 acre parcel planted in 1999. In keeping with our normal practice, we divided the block into an “early” and a “late” picking, harvesting half of the grapes on October 14th and the balance on October 22nd. The earlier harvest date allows us to maintain good natural acidity in the wines, and the second provides more developed and nuanced flavors and aromas. Blending the two lots together allows us to achieve complex, balanced wines every year. With the cool growing season, the alcohol came in at 13%, and even with a complete malolactic fermentation, the wine is bright, fresh, and lively. We have pioneered the use of Oregon oak in Chardonnay, deploying them 50/50 with French oak barrels for over 10 years. The wines are 100% barrel fermented, but with very modest use of new oak, typically in the 10-15% range. At almost 4 years from vintage, this wine is beginning to hit it’s prime. Enjoy now and over the next six years with rich white fish dishes, baked mac and cheese, fresh pesto, and dozens of other white and green foods!”
FRANCE-PROVENCE
Domaine Tempier Bandol Rose 2014 375ML ($27.95) $24 special
Wine Spectator 92 points “Bright and high-pitched, this features a talc note that gives way to rosemary and white cherry hints, while the finish races along with sea salt and blood orange details. Long, chiseled and pure. A delicious rosé that should unwind further with some cellaring. Drink now through 2016.” WS

ITALY-PIEDMONT
Antoniolo Vigneto Castelle, Gattinara DOCG 2008 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “A big, somewhat burly wine, the 2008 Gattinara Castelle hits the palate with an exciting melange of smoke, tobacco, leather and black fruit. The 2008 is rich and explosive to the core, with huge fruit and equally imposing tannins. Readers need to be patient here, but there is a lot to look forward to. I can’t say the 2008 is especially polished, but there is an exuberance here that is undeniably appealing.” AG

Antoniolo Gattinara DOCG 2008 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The 2008 Gattinara is a great introduction to the Antoniolo wines. Sweet floral and savory notes meld into dark red cherries, plums, smoke, tobacco and leather. The 2008 is pliant, expressive and resonant in the glass, with lovely freshness and terrific overall balance. All the elements fall into place in an effortless Gattinara to drink now and over the next handful of years.” AG

Antoniolo ‘Osso San Grato’, Gattinara DOCG 2008 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Another wine that has developed beautifully over the last year, the 2008 Gattinara Osso San Grato impresses for its layered, inviting personality. Sweet tobacco, herbs, menthol, coffee and plums meld together nicely in the glass. This is a surprisingly textured, voluptuous Osso San Grato with terrific potential for the future, although it is quite beautiful, even today. The aromatics and tannins show some elements of development, but the wine is still a bit fresher on the palate.” AG

Antoniolo San Francesco, Gattinara DOCG 2008 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The estate’s 2008 Gattinara San Francesco is pure silk on the palate. The aromas and flavors are already a touch forward, suggesting the 2008 is best enjoyed over the next few years, but it is really the wine’s textural finesse and elegance that stand out in this tasting. Mocha, pine, menthol, sweet tobacco and dark red stone fruits wrap around the lithe, gentle finish. The 2008 has turned out to be a real beauty.” AG

Brovia Sori del Drago Barbera d’Alba 2013 750ML ($31.95) $28 special
Case-12 Brovia Sori del Drago Barbera d’Alba 2013 750ML ($349.95) $289 special (that’s only $24.08/bottle!)
“Perennially, this is my favorite Barbera I represent. These 70 year old vines are from the famed “Garblet Sué” parcel (more commonly referred to as “Bricco del Fiasc”) in Castiglione Falletto. Any other estate would have long since cashed in by planting Nebbiolo. This vineyard is planted at almost 1,000 feet elevation which is about as high as Falletto gets. As always, juice is fermented at a relatively brisk temp and then racked into stainless steel for 18mos. Simple, perfect Barbera.”–Importer Notes

Brovia Valmaggione Nebbiolo d’Alba 2012 750ML ($37.95) $33 special
Case-12 Brovia Valmaggione Nebbiolo d’Alba 2012 750ML ($419.95) $349 special (that’s only $29.08/bottle!)
“Sorry to double down with the superlatives, but for me, this is the most exciting wine the Brovia family bottles. It is the cheapest, lowest abv%, highest elevation, most northerly, most north facing Nebbiolo bottling in the family’s lineup — and the most limited production wine they make. Always a huge winner for me. “Valmaggione” (the actual name of the vineyard is ValmaggioRe, but the printer misspelled the label during the first vintage and the Brovia family decided to stick with it as a joke) is a parcel in Vezza d’Alba that produces some very expensive and sought after wines by more modernist producers like Sandrone. Super steep, sandy soils with great drainage that make for a wine with pronounced freshness and lift. No oak, no extended élevage. Pure, great wine.”–Importer Notes

Brovia Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Case-12 Brovia Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($619.95) $519 special (that’s only $43.25/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 90-92 points “The 2011 Barolo is sumptuous and expressive, with all of the immediacy that is so typical of the year. Dark red cherry, plums, hard candy, spice and tobacco are all woven into a layered finish graced with soft contours and fabulous overall balance for a straight Barolo. As Brovia fans know, the straight Barolo is 70% young-vine fruit from Brea (above 20 years of age), plus the wine that is left over when the single-vineyard Barolos go into cask.” AG
GERMANY
Joh. Jos. Christoffel Estate Riesling Feinherb 2012 750ML ($24.95) $19 special
Wine Spectator 88 points “An enticing note of white chocolate runs through this lush, fruity white. Ripe tangerine flavors linger on the finish, giving this an exotic appeal. Drink now through 2016.” WS
VinopolNote: Feinherb, an unregulated term often substituted for halbtrocken, indicates a wine that has residual sugar but tastes dry or nearly dry.

Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spatlese 2012 750ML ($39.95) $29 special
Wine Spectator 90 points “A supple and seductive sweetie, with peach cobbler, cream and glazed apricot flavors. Red currant and ripe melon notes appear midpalate, leading to a spicy finish. Drink now through 2030.” WS
Terry Theise notes: “Now this is explosively expressive. If I say “apple and slate” yet again, it’s boring but true. It’s the combo of hi-def clarity and torque, firmness and brilliance yet many-layered density, and this goose-flesh tingle threaded through it all—that makes it uncanny”

New Reviews from James Suckling

2012 Diamond Creek Vineyards

“Diamond Creek Vineyards, carved out of Diamond Mountain in Napa Valley California, has four distinctly different vineyards that yield equally singular Cabernet Sauvignons. Even though the vineyards of Diamond Creek – Gravelly Meadow (5 acres), Lake (¾ acre), Petit Verdot (1 acre), Red Rock Terrace (7 acres), and Volcanic Hill (8 acres) – share many personality traits… their individual characteristics become quite apparent.” –Wine Spectator

Founded in 1968 by Al Brounstein, a passionate admirer of Bordeaux, Diamond Creek Vineyard was California’s first vineyard dedicated completely to Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery produces tiny amounts of their single-vineyard estate bottlings, each offering long-lived wines of great complexity, richness and elegance.

Diamond Creek Red Rock Terrace Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($249.95) $189 special, 11 bottles available
James Suckling 99 points “Impressive aromas of clay, dust and blueberries. Lots of blackcurrants, too. Pure fruit. Full body, velvety and soft cashmere-textured tannins. It’s very structured. Need at least five to six years to come together but a fabulous wine. Greatest Red Rock ever? 506 cases made.”

Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($249.95) $189 special, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 98 points “Blackberries, blackcurrants and minerals. Full body and tight tannins. Powerful and long. Amazing depth and structure. Muscular. Classy tannin structure. This needs a few years to soften but amazing. Try in 2018.”

Diamond Creek Gravelly Meadow Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($249.95) $179 special, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 97 points “Aromas of dark fruits such as blackcurrants as well as chili spices. Maybe some tar. It’s full-bodied with wonderful depth and intensity. It starts slowly and grabs your attention. Voluptuous fruit style to this. Better in 2020.”

A Case, Of Course

We offer over 80 diverse, deeply discounted case prices, such as:

Case-12 Domaine de La Janasse Cotes du Rhone Reserve 2012 750ML ($249.95) $199 special, 4 cases available (that’s only $16.58/bottle!)
Domaine de La Janasse Cotes du Rhone Reserve 2012 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 29 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “A custom cuvee for Eric Solomon made by Christophe Sabon, the 2012 Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Reserve comes from older vines on the estate and is a blend of 55% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Carignan and the balance Mourvedre and Cinsault. Aged 12 months in foudre, it’s another superb value from this estate, and since 2011, the Cuvee Reserve has been a significant step up over the estate’s classic Cotes du Rhone release. Drinking well past its humble price point, this 2012 exhibits notions of kirsch, blackberry, smoked meat, graphite and copious licorice nuances to go with a medium to full-bodied, pure and layered feel on the palate. It shows the purity of the vintage, as well as the richness and texture that this estate is known for. It should continue to thrill for another 4-5 years.” WA

Case-12 Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($249.95) $179 special, 7 cases available (that’s only $14.92/bottle!)
Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Enthusiast “This full-bodied, concentrated wine is dry, quite firm and tannic in texture. It smells rich and a bit earthy, and tastes like blackberries, cranberries and beef. The style will accompany rich, meaty food very well.”

Case-12 Louis M. Martini Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 750ML ($159.95) $149 special, 2 cases available (that’s only $12.42/bottle!)
Louis M. Martini Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 750ML ($17.95) $14 special, 35 bottles available
Winery note “A blend of the unique characteristics from several phenomenal vineyards, creating a Cabernet Sauvignon with remarkable balance and consistency. Offering ripe flavors of black plum jam and black currant, this wine is a polished reflection of the excellent 2012 vintage. Hints of toast and a touch of baking spice support the fruit. We selected more than half of the Cabernet grapes for this wine from our own vineyards in Sonoma County, with the balance coming from our longstanding partner growers. The 2012 vintage was slightly warmer than the previous few years, resulting in ripe, dark fruit flavors in our Cabernet. A touch of Petite Sirah lends further dark fruit character and structure to the wine, while a hint of Merlot contributes to a plush mouthfeel.”

Case-12 Montepeloso A Quo Toscana IGT 2011 750ML ($249.95) $199 special, 5 cases available (that’s only $16.58/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Montepeloso A Quo Toscana IGT 2011 750ML ($24.95) $18 special, 36+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni 90 points “Once again, Montepeloso’s entry-level A Quo is fabulous. I expected to find a rich, powerful wine given the year, instead the 2011 A Quo is fresh, vibrant and beautifully delineated. Hints of raspberry jam, rose petals and sweet spices literally jump from the glass. The 2011 is best enjoyed over the next few years, while the fruit remains vibrant. This is a terrific showing from proprietor Fabio Chiarellotto.” AG

Case-12 Bodegas Muga Seleccion Especial Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2010 750ML ($499.95) $439 special, 3 cases available (that’s only $36.58/bottle!)
Bodegas Muga Seleccion Especial Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2010 750ML ($59.95) $39 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “Tight as a drum on the nose, this rambunctious Rioja is throbbing with blackberry, plum and floral aromas. Intense and staunch on the palate, with plum, raspberry, cherry, herb and chocolate flavors, this runs long on the finish, with power and acidity to spare. Hold until 2017, then drink through 2035. Cellar Selection.” WE
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “(70% tempranillo, 20% garnacha, 7% mazuelo and 3% graciano; fermented in large oak vats and aged for 28 months in small French and American oak barrels of varying age): Inky purple. Flamboyant aromas of ripe berries, incense, potpourri, smoky oak and pungent minerals. Lush, fleshy and alluringly sweet, offering intense black and blue fruit flavors that coat the palate. Smooth, seamless and impressively concentrated but also lively, with sneaky tannins giving shape to the long, spice-accented finish.” ST

Case-12 The Prisoner Wine Co. ‘The Prisoner’, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($479.95) $399 special, 1 case available (that’s only $33.25/bottle!)
The Prisoner Wine Co. ‘The Prisoner’, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($44.95) $36 special, 28 bottles available
Robert Parker 92 points “The 2013 Proprietary Red Blend The Prisoner is a creative blend of 44% Zinfandel, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petite Sirah, as well as Syrah, Grenache and Charbono. This dense, full-bodied, opulent red reveals gutsy, rich, peppery, meaty, blackberry, blackcurrant and licorice notes. A savory, lusty, heady red, it begs for a grilled steak or a big, juicy hamburger. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.” RP

Case-12 Domaine de la Tour du Bon Bandol, Provence 2010 750ML ($359.95) $279 special, 3 cases available (that’s only $23.25/bottle!)
Domaine de la Tour du Bon Bandol, Provence 2010 750ML ($34.95) $27 special, 29 bottles available
Wine Spectator 92 points “Brooding and intense, with notes of raw meat, singed alder and dried bay leaf out front, followed by steeped black currant and plum fruit. Accents of iron, mesquite and wine-soaked rosemary line the finish. Still has some serious grip to shed. Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault and Carignan. Best from 2017 through 2026.” WS

Antonio Galloni 88-89 points “The 2012 Bourgogne Rouge impresses for its clarity of fruit, depth and flavor. Dark cherry, plum, spice and new leather all flesh out in a supple, inviting Bourgogne loaded with sheer appeal. There is a lot to like here, including a level of pure resonance that is rare at this level.” AG

Antonio Galloni 89-90 points “Giroud’s 2012 Santenay is striking. Here the flavors are savory and quite powerful. Rock some Roch!

Saint Roch
Arriving in September

Chateau Saint-Roch is located in the Southern French wine region of Roussillon, in the Agly Valley not far from the Mediterranean Sea. It is some of the most southern part of France, technically speaking, not far from the Peyrenees and the Catalonian region of Spain. The castle of Queribus is perched at the summit of the Corbieres Mountain and looks down upon the estate’s vineyards that lie between 400 and 1,200 feet in elevation. The soils here are of schist clay rich in limestone, which imparts elegance to the wines. The wind, called “Tramontane,” blows through the vineyard and the other common residents to the region: herbs, fig trees, blackberry bushes, and pomegranate trees, among others.

In 1998, Francis Guérin founded the domaine and purchased various vineyard plots around the area based on their soil type and ecosystem. The Syrah lies near the top of the hills, dense plantings of grey Grenache and Mourvedre cover a dale, and at the top of the Caribou plateau are black Grenache vineyards. Green harvesting and selective picking are down to limit production and ensure optimal maturity and quality. The grapes are sorted again at the winery. In the cellar, the wine undergoes slow, gentle handling.

Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2014 Côtes du Roussillon Vieilles Vignes is a terrific, medium-bodied, bright and juicy effort that’s loaded with notions of citrus blossom, lime and hints of green herbs. Made from 80% Grenache Blanc and 20% Roussanne that was brought up almost exclusively in tank (10% in new oak), buy this beauty by the case and drink it over the coming year.” WA

Wine Advocate 93 points “A joint venture between Jean-Marc Lafage and Eric Solomon, the 2013 Cotes du Roussillon Chimeres is just another example of the brilliance of the 2013 vintage in the Roussillon. Coming all from the schist soils of Maury and a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan that spent 8-12 months in 500-liter barrels and concrete, it possesses a deep purple color to go with savory notes of kirsch and assorted darker berry fruits, pepper, truffle and damp earth. Full-bodied, thrillingly textured and with incredible purity of fruit, this knockout effort stays lively and elegant, with fine tannin, terrific length and no hard edges. It will knock your socks off over the coming 4-6 years.” WA

Wine Advocate 95 points “One of the most incredible values I’ve tasted in a long, long time, the jaw-dropping good 2013 Kerbuccio Maury Sec (this is a new appellation dedicated to dry wines from Maury) is 40% Syrah, 30% Mourvedre and 30% Grenache, all from the black schist soils of Maury, that spent eight months in concrete tank prior to being bottled unfiltered. Its inky purple color is followed by fabulous aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, violets, crushed rocks and licorice. Full-bodied, seamless and incredibly textured, all while staying fresh and pure, it’s an off-the-charts Roussillon that will drink well for 5-8 years, possibly longer.” WA

Lopez de Heredia
New Release Arriving Tuesday, June 30th

“Perhaps no winery in the world guards it’s traditions as proudly and steadfastly as López de Heredia does,…it is paradoxically a winery in the vanguard, its viticulture and wine-making a shining, visionary example for young, forward-thinking producers all over the world…At López de Heredia, there is serenity that comes with adherence to core principles…” – Eric Asimov

Lopez de Heredia Vina Gravonia Crianza Blanco, Rioja DOCa 2005 750ML ($31.95) $26.60 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Lopez de Heredia Vina Gravonia Crianza Blanco, Rioja DOCa 2005 750ML ($349.95) $299 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93+ points “The 2005 Viña Gravonia Blanco Crianza, from a harvest that was slightly shorter than 2004 but of a similar quality, is pure Viura from very old vines fermented in old oak vats and matured in old oak barrels for four years. It starts off slightly reduced, and needs time and air, so decanting in advance is not out of place. The palate is much more precise, pungent, intense, very balanced and persistent. The nose finally comes on its own with developed notes of petrol, beeswax and chamomile, perhaps a little more evolved than its siblings. This is a white full of personality, ready now. Character, at very good price. 52,000 bottles produced.” WA

R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2003 750ML ($47.95) $38 special

R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Bosconia Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2004 750ML ($47.95) $38 special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2004 Vina Bosconia Reserva is a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho and the remaining 5% Mazuelo and Graciano aged for five years in used barrels, racked twice per year and fined with egg whites before being bottled unfiltered. Dark ruby-colored, with notes of beef blood, iron, antique shop, incense, blood orange and a touch of volatile acidity, the palate is very fresh, with good concentration, clear flavors and enough grip and fruit to age gracefully. A perfumed and feminine great Rioja. The Bosconia vineyard wines are the only ones from Lopez de Heredia bottled in Burgundy bottles. Drink now-2024.” WA

Produttori del Barbaresco
“Overall, the 2011 Barbarescos are racy and seductive. The richness and intensity of the year are perceptible, but the wines retain plenty of site-specific signatures, albeit with softer edges than is typically the case. My impression is that the 2011s will drink well pretty much out of the gate, which should be welcomed by readers cellaring wines from more structured Barbaresco and Barolo vintages.”– Antonio Galloni – Vinuos
