Burghound 87-89 points
“A deeply pitched nose of Savigny-style earth, floral notes and fresh dark berry fruit aromas precedes the clean, fresh and vibrant middle weight flavors that are shaped by rustic but ripe tannins that are well-integrated on the tension-filled finish. This isn’t particularly refined but it’s solidly complex and well-balanced.” BH

Stephen Tanzer 89-92 points
“(this and the following wines were still in barrel in November; this vineyard was picked first in 2011, along with the Beaune Clos de L’Ecu): Bright red. Pungent red fruits and orange peel on the lively nose. Reticent and rather tight in the mouth, but with a suave grain and lovely lift to the red fruit flavors. Quite closed in the early going.” ST

Domaine Henri Boillot Les Lavieres, Savigny-les-Beaune Premier Cru 2010 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 6 bottles available, $53.10 after 10% discount
Wine Advocate 90-92 points
“The 2010 Savigny-les-Beaune Les Lavieres boasts striking inner perfume and an expressive core of dark red fruit. This is another big wine within the context of its appellation, but the balance is first-rate. Layers of fruit continue to build to the powerful, textured finish. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.” WA

Domaine Henri Boillot Volnay 2010 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 35 bottles available, $53.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 90 points ‘Outstanding Top Value’
“This is more aromatically reserved with an elegant nose of red and dark pinot fruit, earth and an interesting note of smoked tea. There is even more refinement to the mouth feel of the lightly mineral-infused medium-bodied flavors that possess a dusty and rather serious finish of impeccable balance and persistence. This may be labeled as a villages but it’s easily of 1er quality.”BH

Domaine Faiveley Volnay-Santenots, Volnay Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($79.95) $61.90 special, 22 bottles available, $55.71 after 10% discount
Burghound 90-92 points
“As would typically be the case this is notably riper than the Frémiets with notes of cassis, plum and black cherry. There is equally good phenolic maturity to the quite solidly structured and even robust flavors that exhibit a taut muscularity before terminating in a delicious and complex finish. This is much less refined and mineral-driven but there is just more depth and a bit more persistence as well though patience will be necessary” BH

Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru, Cote de Beaune 2007 750ML ($119.95) $89 special, 6 bottles available, $80.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 91 points
“As is usually the case, this is the most elegant of the three Corton grands crus, displaying a beguiling, fresh, airy and layered nose of stone, red berry fruit and a subtle hint of the sauvage that continues onto the fresh, energetic and equally stone suffused medium full flavors that possess excellent detail and precision on the presently understated and restrained finish. I like the balance and the mid-palate concentration is such that this should amply reward 6 to 8 years of cellar time.”BH

Domaine Faiveley Les Rugiens, Pommard Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($119.95) $89 special, 9 bottles available, $80.10 after 10% discount
Stephen Tanzer 91-94 points
“Good bright, full red. Medicinal red cherry, rose petal and licorice on the pure but reticent nose. Deep, sappy and spicy in the mouth, displaying excellent lift for the vintage. Finishes with terrific saline breadth and suave tannins. This very rich and sophisticated Rugiens will need time in bottle.” ST

Domaine d’Ardhuy Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2010 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 9 bottles available, $89.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 93 points
“This is surprisingly elegant with its strikingly pure nose of red currants, spice and distinctly pungent earth. There is a coolness to the relatively supple mid-palate with ample minerality to the firm, balanced, long and imposing finish. This is a dazzlingly good Clos du Roi though note that this will need a minimum of 12 to 15 years to be at its best and thus I would not advise buying this if you’re not planning to bury it deep in your cellar.” BH

Pre-Arrival Cote de Beaune Reds
Arriving March 2015
Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine Pere et Fils Corton Bressandes Grand Cru 2012 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 92-94 points
“The 2012 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru comes from a 0.73-hectare parcel of 35-year old vines that is raised in around 30% new oak. It has a lovely, rather regal bouquet with broody black fruit that open nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, lively black fruit, a lovely citric seam and great nervosite towards the finish. This is a very fine grand cru.” WADomaine Dubreuil-Fontaine Pere et Fils Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2012 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 92-94 points
“The 2012 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru comes from 0.60-hectare of vine located just next to the Hospices’ vines. It has a more feminine, slightly more rounded bouquet compared to the Bressandes at the moment, the fruit leaning a little more to the red. The palate is very well balanced with a firm backbone. There is plenty of spice tinged black and red fruit with a generous sprinkle of white pepper over the long, tender finish. Excellent.” WADomaine Faiveley La Piece Sous Le Bois, Blagny Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival specialDomaine Faiveley Pommard 2010 750ML ($54.95) $44 pre-arrival specialDomaine Faiveley Les Rugiens, Pommard Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($119.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Stephen Tanzer 91-94 points “Good bright red. Redcurrant, minerals and sweet oak on the reticent nose. Chewy and intense on the palate, with an impression of strong extract to the cherry liqueur and saline flavors. Nicely concentrated, long and aromatic, with suave tannins and no evidence of hail.” ST

Domaine Faiveley Fremiets, Volnay Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($99.95) $79 pre-arrival special

Domaine Faiveley Volnay-Santenots, Volnay Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($99.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Stephen Tanzer 88-91 points “Bright red. Dark chocolate, minerals and menthol on the nose. Sweet flavors of black cherry and spices show good energy and cut. In a relatively cool style for Santenots, and less ripe than some recent vintages. But should offer early appeal.” ST

Domaine Faiveley Clos de L’Ecu Monopole, Beaune Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($69.95) $49 pre-arrival special
“Good medium red. Bright sour cherry aroma complicated by leather, menthol and herbs; quite cool on the nose. Supple and spicy in the mouth, with a slightly diffuse quality to the medicinal dark fruit flavors. The tannins show a slightly dry edge.” Stephen Tanzer

Domaine Leroy Pommard Les Vignots 2011 750ML ($599.95) $499 pre-arrival special
Burghound 89 points
“There is a soft touch of wood to the notably ripe yet cool and airy aromas of plum, cassis and wet stone. There is excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the medium-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract on the detailed finish that exudes a fine minerality. This balanced effort delivers fine depth and length for its level.” BH

Domaine Leroy Les Narbantons, Savigny-les-Beaune Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($799.95) $699 pre-arrival special
Burghound 92 points
“Subtle reduction masks the subtle points of the nose though there appears to be good ripeness to the mostly dark berry fruit and earth aromas. There is excellent volume to the delicious, complex and solidly well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a relatively powerful, balanced and mouth coating finish. It’s rare to see a Savigny with this kind of muscle yet have it delivered with grace.” BH

William Fevre Vaillons, Chablis Premier Cru 2007 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 12 bottles available
Burghound 89-92 points –Outstanding–
“This is almost as ripe as the Mont de Milieu with a fruit compote nose that displays a hint of exoticism that merges into extremely rich, full, frank and overtly powerful flavors that possess excellent volume, punch and vivacity on the exceptionally pure and driving finish. The acid backbone is firm and despite the ripeness of the fruit, this finishes quite dry and with a seductive texture.” BH

Domaine Buisson-Charles Bouches-Cheres, Meursault Premier Cru 2008 750ML ($119.95) $89 special, 16 bottles available
Burghound 93 points –Sweet Spot Outstanding–
“As elegant as the Goutte d’Or is, the Bouchères goes it one better with its mélange of white peach, spiced pear and dried rose petal aromas that slide gracefully into precise yet quite densely textured flavors that brim with dry extract and superb length. This is an explosive wine that finishes bone dry and manages to combine impressive power with balance and focus. I actually prefer the delivery of this to the Goutte d’Or but at present at least, it doesn’t quite have the same degree of complexity. A qualitative choice but both are worth considering.” BH

Domaine Buisson-Charles Bouches-Cheres, Meursault Premier Cru 2009 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 10 bottles available
Burghound 93 points –Sweet Spot Outstanding–
“Here the nose is slightly more elegant with a pretty array of saline, citrus, floral and spiced pear aromas that are in keeping with the lightly mineral-inflected, textured and ultra-pure middle weight flavors that culminate in a linear and driving finish. This is extremely dry, indeed it is unusually dry for the vintage and while it will undoubtedly put on weight and flesh as it ages, it could at present pass for a fine Chablis.” BH

Domaine Faiveley Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits 2002 750ML ($199.95) $179 special, 6 bottles available
Burghound 93 points
“A moderately expressive nose features just the barest hint of secondary development along with an elegant and softly perfumed mix of earth, underbrush and spice nuances that add breadth to the red and dark pinot fruit aromas. As is usually the case with a fine example of Latricières the minerality is quite pungent and adds even more lift to the vibrant and intense medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a beautifully well-delineated, saline and impressively lingering finish. I very much like this and while it could certainly be drunk now with pleasure, to my taste there is still enough upside potential remaining to recommend waiting a few more years first.” BH

Domaine Henri Gouges Les Vaucrains, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2005 750ML ($199.95) $179 special, 12 bottles available
Burghound 93 points –Outstanding–
“Extremely primary yet multi-dimensional black fruit and earthy aromas introduce rich, full and massive flavors that are powerful, robust and muscled with so much mid-palate sap that the extremely firm tannic spine is almost, if not completely masked. However, as it always does, the tannins will come out with time and I expect that this will always have a certain chewy quality and will require more than a decade of time in bottle to really begin to round out. Wonderful potential but for the very patient.” BH

Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot Les Cazetieres, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2008 750ML ($99.95) $79 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Spectator 92 points
“A dark, almost brooding red, whose plum, black cherry and black currant fruit is sweet and permeating. Rich and supple, this picks up spice and mineral notes as it glides to the long finish. Best from 2012 through 2024.” WS

Tua Rita Toscana Giusto Di Nostri 2009 750ML ($79.95) $49 special, 5 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94 points
“The 2009 Giusto di Notri boasts tons of power and sheer energy. Dark cherries, plums, tobacco and incense are all wrapped around a powerful core of fruit in this expressive, beautifully delineated wine. The 2009 impresses for its length, radiance and fine overall balance. Floral notes laced with a hint of sweet rose petals add brightness and lift on the finish. ”

Tua Rita Toscana Redigaffi 2008 750ML ($299.95) $179 special, 5 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 96 points
“The 2008 Redigaffi is impeccable in its elegance and polish. Dark cherries, licorice, espresso and mocha meld together beautifully in this textured, fleshy wine. Despite its sophisticated personality, there is plenty of tannin lurking underneath to provide support. This is a beautifully round, opulent, yet impeccably balanced wine of the highest level. Smoke, minerals, licorice and tar wrap around the intense finish. Redigaffi remains a unique and powerful expression of Merlot from the Tuscan coast. ”
Wine Spectator 94 points “A flamboyant wine that reminds me of California, with lots of ripe berries and toasty oak. Full and opulent, with raspberry sauce and coconut oak flavors. Needs time to come together. Pure Merlot. Best after 2013. ”
Stephen Tanzer 95 points “(100% merlot) Bright, deep ruby. Exhilarating nose combines wild berries, smoky plum, sage and flowers. Wonderfully dense and sweet, with a captivating light touch to the flavors of ripe black and red fruits, coffee and sweet spices. The wine’s oak-derived vanilla is a bit more present today than in most young vintages of Redigaffi, but the terrific core of ripe acidity really extends the finish and contributes lift. The tannins are extremely smooth and fine-grained. Much less herbal than the ’07, this is a great vintage for Redigaffi.”

Altesino New Releases
Arriving June 2015

In the heart of Southern Tuscany, lies the magical Montalcino, which produces some of the greatest wines of Tuscany from Brunello, a clone of Sangiovese.  Created by age-old traditions and culture, Brunello di Montalcino is the only Tuscan red that is not a blend and has a distinction of its own, producing richer, darker berries than the more red driven fruit we usually experience with Sangiovese.  Along with Barolo and Barbaresco, Brunello is considered one of the “great growths” of Italy.

The historic cellar is situated in the 14th century Palazzo Altesi and stretches out over 80 hectares. Altesino is a property blessed with tradition and history, with a focus on looking towards the future.  Considered an innovative leader, Altesino spearheaded the concept of “cru” wines, made with a special selection of grapes from a single vineyard (1975), and are also one of the first Italian estates to introduce French barriques to the cellar for aging (1979).   Altesino’s five “Cru” vineyards include Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Macina, Pianezzine, and Montosoli, a cru vineyard particularly famous for the incredibly elegant wines made from the handpicked grapes.

A more modern approach in style contributes to fuller bodied wines with darker, denser fruit and full of bold spice components.  These wines are a great opportunity to try some incredible wines, with the Montosoli in particular, being one of the greatest vineyards in Montalcino. This vineyard lies on ancient limestone soils with a 360 degree exposure, and is one of the most sought after wines from Tuscany.  Ancient soils with a modern twist in the cellar, Altesino is a great way to either become introduced to the higher quality wines of Tuscany, or to broaden your palates with the different styles coming from this historic region.

Belle Pente

Belle Pente is an incredible example of capturing what Willamette Valley is all about: humble, well-crafted, down to Earth, get your hands dirty, no frills, minimal manipulating, grape growing and winemaking.  Interested in a tasting?  Call the owner and winemaker Brian himself, and he will set one up on he and his wife’s incredible 70 acre historic farm in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA.  This is the real deal, and what making wine is all about; passion, hardwork, tenacity, and wonderful people who are happy to show you what the outstanding wines of Willamette Valley have to offer, created from nature itself and guided by their own, gentle bare hands.

Belle Pente (‘beautiful slope’ in French), owned and operated by Brian and Jill O’Donnell, planted its first vineyard in 1994 and now includes 16 acres of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay.     Their focus includes organic and biodynamic viticulture, careful management of vineyard quality and yields, and meticulous hand sorting the moment the grapes arrive to the winery.    True to their nature, they follow a standard “old school” white wine making protocol, which includes pressing in a vintage 1960’s German bladder.  Their inspiration comes from the incredible wines of Burgundy and Alsace, and they strive to follow the guiding principle that great wine is made in the vineyard and merely nurtured in the winery.  Here’s to celebrating Belle Pente, and its achievements- we are so fortunate they chose to follow their dream in Willamette Valley.  Cheers!

Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Vivid red. High-pitched aromas of black raspberry, Asian spices and fresh rose. Juicy, penetrating and pure, offering vibrant red berry and bitter cherry flavors that gain flesh and weight with aeration. Darker fruit notes come up on the clinging finish, with its lingering floral and spicecake qualities. Very suave pinot, with the balance to age but plenty of upfront appeal as well.” ST

Stephen Tanzer 92 points
“Bright, hazy red. Assertive smoke- and spice-accented aromas of black raspberry, cherry pit, sassafras and incense. Supple, tangy and sharply focused on entry, then broader in the middle, offering smoky cherry, blood orange and dark berry flavors and a hint of bitter herbs. Shows a refreshingly tangy quality on the finish, which clings with outstanding tenacity and no obvious tannins. Distinctly elegant in style, showing the best attributes of this cool vintage.” ST

“Bright ruby-red. A highly complex bouquet displays sexy red berry preserve, incense and candied rose scents, along with suggestions of cola, mocha and allspice. Sappy, deeply concentrated cherry and raspberry flavors are lifted and braced by juicy acidity and show excellent clarity and thrust. Closes with palate-staining intensity and sweetness, leaving suave floral and Asian spice notes behind. Impressively balanced and fine-grained, with serious cellaring potential.” ST

Burghound 89-92 points
“Here the nose is quite similar to that of the Serpentières with its violets and lavender scents that combine with notable earth and underbrush-infused red berry fruit aromas. There is good richness, size and weight to the round yet relatively refined medium-bodied flavors that possess a fine sense of balance on the mouth coating finish. I like the mouth feel and if this moderately structured effort can develop more depth in bottle, it just might catch the Fourneaux in time.”BH

Domaine Chandon de Briailles Les Valozieres, Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru 2007 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 12 bottles available, $44.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 87-89 points
“Not surprisingly, this offers a completely different expression with fresh and overtly rustic earthy dark berry fruit aromas that introduce big, rich, full and serious flavors that possess plenty of volume and a robust muscularity if limited elegance on the solidly persistent finish. A wine of powerful but not nuance.” BH

Comte Armand Pommard Premier Cru 2010 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 10 bottles available, $80.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 89-92 points
“This is also exuberantly fresh and expressive with a pretty and ripe nose of primarily red currant and blue berries plus ample amounts of warm earth. There is a similar level of energy that gives a real sense of life to the detailed, pure and impressively intense flavors that possess solid phenolic ripeness and superb balance on the lasting finish. Fine quality here and worth considering”BH

Domaine des Epeneaux Comte Armand Clos des Epeneaux Monopole, Pommard Premier Cru 2006 750ML ($179.95) $149 special, 4 bottles available, $134.10 after 10% discount
Fine Wine Review 93 points
“Benjamin Leroux manages to turn out consistently fine wines, no matter what challenges the vintage poses. The Pommard-Clos des Epeneaux has truffly dark fruit aromas. The wine is smooth and harmonious in the mouth with iodide, dark fruit and plenty of round tannins. I’d expect to wait 5-8 years before drinking and the wine should then hold quite well for 15-20 years.”
Burghound 92 points “In contrast to the reticence displayed from barrel, now that the ’06 is in bottle it is surprisingly open and expressive with a beautifully layered nose of raspberry, cherry and red pinot fruit nuanced by hints of spice, earth, minerals and a dried herb component that introduces intense, balanced and pure flavors that culminate in a serious, mouth coating and well built finish where the tannins are solid but not rustic or aggressive. This will require the better part of a decade to arrive at its majority as the tannins are quite firm and despite the inviting openness of the nose, the finish is on the austere side at present. Comments: Outstanding. Drink: 2014+.” BH

Domaine des Epeneaux Comte Armand Les Fremiets, Volnay Premier Cru 2010 750ML ($139.95) $99 special, 11 bottles available, $89.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 91-93 points
“This is more elegant still with a high-toned, pure and exceptionally fresh nose of mineral-inflected rose petal, stone and wild red berry fruit aromas. The equally mineral-driven, energetic and beautifully well-detailed medium-bodied flavors possess pain staining intensity, all wrapped in the dusty, firm, focused, balanced and lingering finish. This is a really lovely effort and Leroux noted that “the 2010 is the best Frémiets that I have ever made.”

Domaine de Courcel Grand Clos des Epenots, Pommard Premier Cru 2009 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 10 bottles available, $89.10 after 10% discount
Stephen Tanzer 92-95 points, Burghound 92-94 points
“Deep ruby-red. Black fruits, violet, licorice and minerals on the nose. Dense and ripe but sappy and not at all thick, with its impressive volume cut by violet and spice. This boasts an impressive combination of sweetness, vibrancy and powerful underlying structure. Finishes with saline and chocolate notes and excellent lift. Offers superb potential.”ST

Domaine d’Ardhuy Corton Pougets Grand Cru 2010 750ML ($99.95) $79 special, 17 bottles available, $71.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 91 points
“An openly earthy nose also offers up notes of dark berries, plum, stone and dried floral nuances. There is a velvety and utterly delicious quality to the solidly concentrated and mouth coating flavors that also reflect an underlying minerality on the long finish that displays fine balance. This isn’t quite as complete as the other examples of Corton in the range but it’s the finest among them.”

Domaine d’Ardhuy Aux Clous, Savigny-Les-Beaune Premier Cru 2010 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 11 bottles available, $35.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 88 points
“There is a touch of crushed leaf character to the otherwise ripe, earthy and pretty mélange of dark berry fruit aromas. There is lovely complexity to the punchy and mildly rustic medium weight flavors that possess very firm tannins on the lingering finish. This is clearly built to age and will need the better part of a decade to arrive at its peak.” BH

Domaine d’Ardhuy Les Peuillets, Savigny-les-Beaunes Premier Cru 2010 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 17 bottles available, $35.10 after 10% discount

Germain Domaine du Chateau de Chorey Les Teurons, Beaune Premier Cru 2005 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 5 bottles available, $80.10 after 10% discount
Stephen Tanzer 91+ points “Bright, full red. Sexy aromas of dark raspberry, leather, game, iron and spices. Suave on entry, then juicy and pure in the middle; this appears to be in the process of shutting down. An intensely flavored wine with a serious tannic spine and noteworthy finishing energy. All of these 2005s were destemmed but this comes across as quite spicy. I like this…” ST

Domaine Huber-Verdereau Pommard En Vaumuriens Hauts 2010 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 7 bottles available, $44.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 89 points
“Outstanding — This is more deeply pitched still with ripe but cool earth and stone inflected aromas of briar and plum. There is good volume to the delicious, serious and admirably complex flavors that also evidence plenty of minerality on the racy, dusty and long finish. As with the straight Pommard, there is good phenolic maturity to the dense but fine tannins and while this is a bit less structured, this will also need a few years of cellar time.” BH

Domaine Maillard Pere et Fils Corton Renardes Grand Cru 1996 750ML ($199.95) $149 special, 1 bottle available, $134.10 after 10% discount
Wine Spectator 90 points
“Gorgeous fruit. Black raspberries, cherries and spice comingle in this elegant, silky ’96. Everything is there in the right proportions, including ripe, fine tannins and a lingering finish. Very forward and accessible.” WS

Domaine Maillard Pere et Fils Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2002 750ML ($139.95) $119 special, 1 bottle available, $107.10 after 10% discount

“Strong oak aromas presently dominate the otherwise ripe red and dark berry fruit nose. There is good freshness and energy to the powerfully concentrated big-bodied flavors that are shaped by forceful and phenolically mature tannins that are buffered by the copious extract. This is an imposing wine, and very Corton in character, that possesses excellent depth and length on the moderately austere finish where about the only nit is a trace of backend warmth. This is also one to strongly consider as long as you’re prepared to cellar it for a minimum of 10 years.”BH

“Faiveley’s 2011 Corton Clos des Corton is a fitting conclusion to this great night of wine and food. Intensely saline and pointed, the 2011 impresses for its pure energy and tension. The flavors are vibrant and impeccably delineated in a Burgundy that is all about finesse. This is a great showing from the Clos des Corton.” AG
Stephen Tanzer 94 points “Medium red. Ineffable nose and palate offer red fruits, minerals, spices and flowers, complicated by game, earth and leather. Sweet, concentrated and very intense, boasting outstanding density and a fine-grained texture, with salty minerality giving the wine a weightless impression that’s remarkable considering its density. A strong tannic spine and brisk acidity energize and draw out the finish of this sharply delineated, pristine grand cru.” ST

“Outstanding — Very deep ruby. An explosive and highly complex nose offers up aromas of raspberry and cherry liqueur along with hints of lavender and violets. The medium-bodied flavors possess outstanding richness and volume with excellent levels of dry extract that render the tannins almost invisible at present though the finish is sufficiently firm to suggest that they will require 12 to 15 years to fully resolve. I very much like the balance and sense of harmony here.” BH

Big, rich and broad, with harmonious acidity framing the black cherry, chocolate and leather flavors. This classic, complete Beaune wine spreads out to saturate the palate, with lush tannins reaching the front teeth. Quite thick in the style of the vintage but without any excess weight.”ST

“The 2010 Pommard is pure sensuality. Sweet roses, dark red fruit and spices wrap around the palate in this supple, refined wine. The Pommard impresses for its elegance and richness. It is a beautiful and highly representative 2010. Sweet floral notes linger on the finish. The Pommard is made from vines in Clos Blanc, a 1er Cru vineyard. – Henri Boillot turned out a superb set of 2010 reds. Best of all, readers won’t have to shell out a fortune to enjoy them, as a number of the more modestly priced wines far exceed the quality of their respective appellations” AG

“Good bright, deep red. Redcurrant, pepper, iron and earth tones on the nose, lifted by a suggestion of dried flowers. Reticent today but showing outstanding vinosity to its soil-driven flavors of redcurrant, spices, licorice, pepper and underbrush. Best today on the very long, floral back end, where the firm tannins currently clamp down on the wine’s fruit. This youthfully medicinal wine is tighter than the Volnay premier crus here and in need of a good seven or eight years of cellaring. Incidentally, Sebastien Boillot describes the family’s 2011s as less charming than the ’10s and ’12s and believes that they will need long aging.” ST

“A pungently earthy nose of lightly spiced plum and various dark pinot fruit aromas leads to energetic and well-detailed flavors that exude a fine minerality on the delicious and solidly persistent finish. “Bright ruby-red. Expressive, very ripe nose combines black cherry, wild herbs, leather, smoke and earth. Wonderfully sweet and silky but bright, with a creamy small-berry character to the intense flavors of black cherry, iron, dark chocolate and minerals. For all its density, this conveys a juicy quality and considerable elegance.” ST

“Bright red-ruby. Rather brooding aromas of cassis, blackberry, smoke and licorice are pure and discreet. Surprisingly rich on entry, then lush and seamless in the middle, but with very good acidity framing and lifting the black fruit and game flavors. The powerful, rising finish features building tannins and a distinct thick-skinned character. The old vines in Boillot’s parcel were strongly affected by millerandage, which largely explains this wine’s extra measure of texture and concentration.” ST

“Good deep red. Black cherry, licorice and herbs on the nose, given punch by strong peppery spices. Sweet, supple and nicely concentrated if a bit less complex and high-pitched than the 2009 version. Lovely black cherry fruit displays a tangy sweetness. The very long finish features dusty, fine-grained tannins. The crop level here was just 18 hectoliters per hectare, according to Boillot.” ST

“Deep red-ruby. Highly perfumed, musky aromas of black raspberry and smoky minerality. Large-scaled, round and rich but not yet complex; less creamy and fine-grained than the Chevrets, showing a youthful toughness from the calcaire-rich soil. Despite the fact that this was the first pinot parcel Boillot picked in 2011, this wine relies more on its big, ripe tannins than on its acids for balance. Really saturates the palate on the aftertaste.” ST

“Deep red-ruby. Black raspberry, dark chocolate, game and a wild hint of leather on the nose, with a floral element emerging with air. Sweet, rich, broad and deep, boasting a velour-like, utterly mouthfilling texture that’s rare for the vintage. Excellent acidity gives this firmly tannic, very long wine terrific energy and lift. “Huber indicated that this was vinified with 50% whole clusters. A notably floral nose of ripe and pure red pinot fruit scents gives way to attractively detailed, intense and mouth coating medium-bodied flavors that possess a balanced, spicy, dusty and lingering mineral-inflected finish. This is really lovely if not particularly deep though it’s already so pretty that if it can add more depth in bottle my score may seem unduly conservative.” BH

“The 2010 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine is a little fleshier and deeper than the villages, but it remains relatively airy and delicate. Sweet red berries, flowers, licorice and tobacco are some of the notes that are woven together in this gorgeous Burgundy. The firm tannins will need a few years in bottle to soften. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030.” WA

“In contrast to a number of the preceding wines, this is almost devoid of wood influence which allows the ripe and very earthy cassis and black raspberry aromas to enjoy center stage. The rich, full-bodied and enveloping middle weight plus flavors possess a suave, even silky mouth feel though the typical Pommard-like tannins arrive just at the very end of the exceptionally persistent finish. This is really quite good and well-worth considering though note that it will require extensive cellar time.”

John Gilman 92+ points “The premier cru of Clos de la Barre is located immediately below the village center of Volnay, tucked in on the slope between les Angles to its north and Clos de la Bousse d’Or to its south. The 2010 from Maison Jadot is outstanding and another real sleeper to search out in this vintage. The classy and very precise bouquet offers up scents of cassis, dark berries, espresso, dark chocolate, a great base of complex minerality and just a hint of new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with impressive complexity, ripe tannins, a lovely core and impressive grip on the long and tangy finish. A beautiful bottle of Volnay in the making, the 2010 Jadot Clos de la Barre will need the better part of a decade to fully blossom and should age for a very long time”JG

“This offers a big step up in both aromatic complexity as well as elegance with its cool red berry fruit nose replete with violet and anise hints. There is good richness and fine volume with ample mid-palate concentration to the refined middle weight flavors as the supporting tannins possess a very fine grain, all wrapped in a balanced, intense and solidly long finish. There is a touch of youthful austerity but I suspect that the backend will flesh out relatively quickly.” BH

“Good full red. Ripe aromas of musky dark cherry, dark berries, minerals and bitter chocolate, lifted by a violet topnote; more floral and spicy than the Pitures. “Medium red-ruby. Aromas of black cherry and mocha; less floral and complex than the Volnay cuvees. Sweet and chewy on entry, then a bit cool, even austere, in the middle, showing a medicinal cast to the black fruit and chocolate flavors. Holding a lot in reserve but distinctly taut and clenched today. Finishes with tight tannins. Seems less ripe and rich than the Volnay Pitures.” ST

“The 2010 Corton ‘Grèves’ from Maison Jadot is the most broad-shouldered and potentially complex of these three excellent Cortons, as it offers up a deep and very precise bouquet of red and black cherries, coffee, iron-like soil tones, woodsmoke, coriander seed and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite reserved, with a rock solid core of fruit, outstanding transparency, firm tannins and excellent focus and grip on the very long, very young and soil-driven finish. This is a classic young Corton that will need some patience, but which should be absolutely stellar at its apogee.”JG

Stephen Tanzer & Burghound 90 points
“A very subtle hint of wood frames earth suffused red pinot fruit and plum aromas with a slight hint of crushed leaf that lead to more serious and more somber medium-bodied flavors brimming with dry extract on the impressively deep and moderately austere finish. There is simply another dimension here relative to the Aigrots with better integration of the underlying structure.”ST

Stephen Tanzer 90-92 points “(100% vendange entier; 20% new oak; small, concentrated berries from old vines): Good medium red. Lovely subtle perfume of cherry and raspberry liqueur lifted by a peppery element. Sweet, dense and lively but restrained on the palate, with distinctly dark flavors of blueberry, licorice and bitter chocolate. The brooding finish features broad, palate-coating tannins. I like the peppery stem element here as it contributes energy without overpowering the wine’s fruit.” ST

Domaine Jean-Marc Pavelot Les Peuillets, Savigny-Les-Beaune Premier Cru 2010 750ML ($59.95) $44 special, 15 bottles available, $39.60 after 10% discount
Burghound 90 points
“A more elegant and slightly fresher nose features a pretty mix of red berries along with hints of violet and plum. There is also more of a mineral character to the appealingly detailed, complex and delicious flavors that are shaped by more refined tannins while offering fine length. A classic Peuillets of finesse.”BH

“Here the fruit is ripe though distinctly different as the Savigny style earth character is quite prominent on the somber dark pinot fruit nose. There is a velvety texture to the supple and relatively forward flavors that possess good concentration and fine balance on the sappy finish. This isn’t an especially elegant effort but it is certainly delicious and satisfying.”BH

Domaine Pierre Guillemot Bourgogne Rouge 2012 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 10 bottles available, $21.60 after 10% discount
From the winery:
“From vineyards located low on the slopes of the town of Savigny-lès-Beaune. Limestone soil with gravel. Grapes are sorted and entirely de-stemmed; traditional vinification. Fifteen months in 1- to 3-year-old barrels. Shows aromas of berries; raspberry; blackberry; roses. Pair with red and white meat; aromatic cheeses.”

“The 2008 Volnay Clos de la Bousse d’Or is impeccable from start to finish. Elegant, refined aromatics weave into layers of fruit as this substantial Volnay shows off its class and purity. The finish is supple and delicate, with plenty of reserve. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2038.” AG

Nicolas Potel Maison Roche de Bellene Malconsorts, Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru 2009 750ML ($219.95) $199 special, 15 bottles available, $179.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 91-94 points “This is presently the spiciest of the three Vosne 1ers in the range which adds plenty of background nuance and complexity to the red currant, plum and cassis aromas. The earthy and relatively powerful big-bodied flavors possess excellent intensity and copious amounts of dry extract that coats the palate on the hugely long finish. Despite the youthful expressiveness presently being displayed, this is really quite a serious effort that I suspect will shut down for a good while as it’s clearly built to age.”BH

Domaine Tollot-Beaut Aloxe-Corton 2007 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 1 bottle available, $44.10 after 10% discount

“A ripe, modern style, featuring black cherry and raspberry notes accented by new oak. The oak needs to be integrated, but there’s sweetness on the finish. Best from 2012 through 2021. 110 cases imported”

Thierry Violot-Guillemard Clos des Mouches, Beaune Premier Cru 2009 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 8 bottles available, $62.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 90 points
“A soupçon of wood does not interfere with the transparency of the very fresh mineral-inflected red pinot fruit aromas that complement the equally fresh and energetic middle weight flavors that possess good mid-palate density and culminate in a racy, detailed and focused finish. Lovely and while this is not especially complex at present, the underlying material is such that it appears that more depth will develop.”BH

Thierry Violot-Guillemard Clos de Derriere St. Jean, Pommard Premier Cru 2008 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 3 bottles available, $62.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 90 points
“This offers a noticeable step up in finesse and aromatic elegance with pretty and very pure earthy red raspberry and cherry notes that blend into naturally sweet, rich and delineated middle weight flavors that carry obvious finishing minerality and solid punch. This is really quite a nice effort as the balance is impeccable and the overall impression is a Pommard of finesse and understatement.”BH

Burghound 92 points
“This is also ultra-elegant, high-toned and admirably pure with essence of red pinot fruit trimmed in hints of underbrush merging seamlessly into detailed and lightly mineral-infused flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration and absolutely impeccable balance. An ageworthy Pommard of finesse and refinement.”BH

Thierry Violot-Guillemard Les Epenots, Pommard Premier Cru 2009 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 3 bottles available, $89.10 after 10% discount
Burghound 93 points
“A pure and soft red berry fruit nose that is elegant, airy and solidly complex is trimmed in a judicious amount of wood. The suave, seductive and beautifully textured flavors coat the palate with dry extract that renders the otherwise firm tannic spine less prominent on the strikingly well-balanced finish. This is really quite classy and stylish and should make for a terrific Epenots in 10 to 12 years. Highly recommended.”BH
