Bergstrom Wines ‘Silice’ Pinot Noir, Chehalem Mountains 2013 750ML ($69.95) $59 special

Found in the 21 acres of vineyard land contiguous to the winery, these bright, reflective oceanic soils produce our most concentrated, spicy and fruit-forward Pinot Noir, a wine we now call “Silice.” This wine is the epitome of our biodynamic farming efforts on sandstone soils, studying and revealing a special terroir that creates wines of great finesse and power. Between 2003 and 2011, you knew it as de Lancellotti.”

Domaine Chofflet-Valdenaire Clos Jus, Givry Premier Cru 2009 750ML ($37.95) $27 special
Importer note “Valdenaire’s Givry 1er Cru Clos Jus (located next to the Clos Cellier aux Moines) comes from an east-facing hillside looking out to Chalone-sur-Saone. This ideal sloping vineyard, with stony, red clay and limestone soil, was recognized as the finest hillside site in Givry before phylloxera. The entire slope was then abandoned, and only recently replanted. Yields are naturally low and the grapes are always millerandes, making for very concentrated fruit. The wine has a pronounced black-fruit taste, suggesting the Cotes de Nuits, that caused the owners of the vineyard to wonder about the Givry-ness of the Clos Jus after their first harvests (no living person ever having tasted a Clos Jus before.) They have since learned to cherish the uniqueness of this site; indeed, in a recent comment on the Clos de Lambrays Grand Cru, the Revue du Vin de France remarks on how the Grand Cru’s “complex bouquet” recalls that of the “young and surprising Clos Jus of Givry.””

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Chavignol 2013 750ML ($29.95) $26 special
Wine Advocate 90+ points “Complex, slightly smoky and mineral on the nose, with elegant and subtle citrus flavors, Gérard Boulay’s 2013 Sancerre is currently completely characterized by the limestone soils of Chavignol and its rather oxidative vinification. Tightly-woven, extremely mineral, powerful and still too young, this complex wine will benefit from further bottle aging.” WA

Domaine des Baumard Savennieres Clos du Papillon 2009 750ML ($41.95) $36 special
Wine Spectator 93 points “Captivating, with a lively quinine streak leading the way, followed by Jonagold apple, honeysuckle, green almond and plantain notes that race through the pure, mineral-driven finish. Intense, with enough in reserve to warrant cellaring. Best from 2014 through 2020.” WS

Lucien Crochet Sancerre La Croix du Roy Rouge 2010 750ML ($41.95) $38 special
Winery note “[Translated] Nose of red fruit, fresh strawberry, cherries, flowers, and wet chalk. Elegant, complex and fine on the palate. Beautiful balance. Silky, very balanced and long finish.”
FRANCE-RHONE
Domaine Rene Rostaing Cote-Rotie La Landonne 2012 750ML ($159.95) $133 special
Wine Advocate 96 points “Getting a big “Wow” in the notes, the 2012 Cote Rotie la Landonne offers additional richness, concentration and depth, with notes of lots of floral and violet notes intermixed with cassis, cruhsed rock and pepper. Full-bodied, concentrated and with building tannin, it needs 4-5 years in the cellar and will keep for 20-25+.” WA

Domaine Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie – Cote Blonde 2012 750ML ($179.95) $159 special
Wine Advocate 97 points “I think the best wine here (at the moment anyways) is the 2012 Cote Rotie Cote Blonde. More reserved and closed initially, it has subtle, yet seductive notes of black raspberry, blackberry, toasted spice, smoke earth and cured meat that gradually open up in the glass. This is followed by a full-bodied, dense, substantial Cote Rotie that has awesome polish to its tannin, a great mid-palate and a smoking finish. It too needs short-term cellaring, but will keep for 2-3 decades.” WA
FRANCE-OTHER
Domaine Leon Barral Faugeres Valiniere, Languedoc-Roussillon 2011 750ML ($79.95) $49 special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The Mourvèdre dominated 2011 Faugères Valiniere (which incorporates a smidge of Syrah) is a full-bodied, big boned, layered and rich Faugères that needs bottle age. Giving up awesome blueberry, licorice, violets and spice, it hits the palate with serious concentration, lots of fruit and building underlying structure that comes through with time in the glass. This is a serious Faugères that deserves 2-4 years of bottle aged, and will drink nicely through 2026.” WA

Bruna Grimaldi Badarina Vigna Regnola, Barolo DOCG 2010 750ML ($59.95) $41.90 special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 92+ points “this 1.5-hectare plot, planted on shallow white soil at a high altitude of 420 meters in Serralunga, is the estate’s “original” vineyard, where Bruna Grimaldi’s grandfather was born; the only Barolo for which Grimaldi uses cappello sommerso for extraction): Medium-deep red. Complex aromas of raspberry, truffle, smoke and underbrush. Large-scaled, concentrated and rich, offering powerful, lightly medicinal flavors of raspberry and strawberry complicated by licorice and menthol. This very young wine finishes dry and broad, with serious granular tannins calling for extended aging. The Badarina spends a full 36 months in oak and is released a year later than the other Barolos of its vintage. (Grimaldi kept a bit of this fruit in both 2010 and 2009 to make a reserve bottling, but the 2009 will not be released until 2015.)” ST

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Serra’ Barbera d’Alba 2012 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Antonio Galloni 90 points “Paitin’s 2012 Barbera d’Alba Serra jumps from the glass with dark red cherries, plums, spices, rose petals and tobacco are some of the many notes that meld together in the 2012 Barbera d’Alba Serra. Sweet floral and spice notes flesh out in an ample wine that overdelivers big time. The Serra was aged exclusively in Slavonian oak.” AG

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Ca Veja Nebbiolo d’Alba 2011 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special
Antonio Galloni 90-92 points “The 2011 Nebbiolo d’Alba Ca Veja shows how beautiful this vintage can be. Broad, rich and ample on the palate, the 2011 blossoms with brightly-hued red fruit, spices, mint and flowers. The aromas and flavors are those of Nebbiolo from Alba, but the estate’s approach to farming the site, coupled with the warmth of the vintage and aging in cask yield a wine of remarkable class and pure pedigree. The 2011 was done entirely in cask.” AG

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Campolive Barbera d’Alba Superiore 2011 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Antonio Galloni 89-91 points “The 2011 Barbera d’Alba Campolive jumps from the glass with an attractive mélange of dark black fruit, spices and balsamic-inflected nuances. The richness of the year comes through. At the same time, there is an attractive classicism to the 2011. The 2011 was aged in a new Slavonian oak cask.” AG

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Sori Paitin’, Barbaresco DOCG 2010 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The estate’s 2010 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin is stunningly beautiful. Layers of fruit blossom in a large-scaled, dramatic Barbaresco endowed with tremendous depth and pure structure. Balsamic-inflected plums, tobacco, leather, spices and licorice meld together in the glass. The 2010 Sorì Paitin is huge, powerful and drop-dead gorgeous. Sweet menthol, pine and wild flowers adds finesse on a finish that is all about power. The structure of the vintage comes through in spades. The 2010 spent 24 months in cask.” AG

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Sori Paitin’, Barbaresco DOCG 2007 1.5L ($99.95) $89 special
Stephen Tanzer 90 points “Good full red. Smoke and a suggestion of exotic fruits on the very ripe nose, complicated by leather, black olive and game nuances. Thick and surprisingly deep, with a high-pH mouth feel. Finishes with substantial tannins that currently cut off the wine’s fruit. The leathery quality gives this a slightly rustic quality.”

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Vecchie Vigne’ Sori Paitin 2004 750ML ($79.95) $71.90 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2004 Barbaresco Sori’ Paitin Vecchie Vigne is marvelous. Dark red berries, crushed flowers, smoke, ash and tar are just some of the notes that emege from this big yet beautifully articulated Vecchie Vigne. The 2004 shows superb class and fabulous overall balance. As always this is a fairly large-scaled Barbaresco, but all of the elements meld together beautifully. A long, sensual finish rounds things out in style. With air the 2004 is approachable today, but it clearly has the stuffing and freshness to drink well to age 25, perhaps beyond. The Vecchie Vigne captures the essence of this great Piedmontese vintage in spades.” AG

ITALY-TUSCANY
Stella di Campalto Podere San Giuseppe Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2008 750ML ($119.95) $99 special
Antonio Galloni 93+ points “Bright red berries, tobacco, smoke, incense and orange peel take shape in the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino. The most vibrant and chiseled of the three vintages I tasted on this trip, the 2008 is really starting to blossom nicely. The 2008 can be enjoyed today or cellared. There is a lot to look forward to here, that much is obvious.” AG
SPAIN
Bodegas Hermanos Pecina Senorio de P. Pecina Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2007 750ML ($29.95) $21.90 special
John Gilman 93 points “The 2007 Rioja ‘Reserva’ from Bodegas Pedro de Peciña comes in at an octane of 13.5 percent alcohol and is absolutely classic on both the nose and palate. The bouquet is a very fine constellation of red plums, sweet raspberries, toasted coconut, lovely soil tones, Rioja spices and hints of the nutskin to come. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and full-bodied, with a velvety attack, a sappy core, outstanding focus and balance, moderate tannins, tangy acids and excellent length and grip on the beautifully balanced and complex finish. This is still a tad on the young side, but this is a simply beautiful bottle of old school Rioja. I had no difficulty drinking this wine today, but it will be even better with another four or five years of bottle age. 2015-2055.” JG
AUSTRIA
Weinbau Jutta Ambrositsch Wiener Gemischter Satz Sieveringer Ringelspiel, Vienna 2013 750ML ($47.95) $39 special
Wine Advocate 93 points “From two vineyards planted in 1948 and 1952 with 10 or 12 grape varieties in total, the 2013 Sieveringer Gemischter Satz Ringelspiel offers a nice, clear and precise aroma of white-fleshed pip fruit and herbal notes. Juicy, piquant and full-bodied on the palate this elegant, stimulating and slightly sweet wine is very well balanced and full of tension and complexity. A great Austrian white! ” WA
AUSTRALIA
Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz, South Australia 2006 750ML ($69.95) $49 special
Wine Advocate 95+ points “Blended of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2006 St Henri Shiraz is a blend of 5 different South Australia sub-regions spanning from Robe to Clare Valley. Never seeing new oak, this vintage was aged 15 months in seasoned 1460 liter vats. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it has a purely fruited nose giving notes of intense cassis, crushed blackberries, some kirsch, black pepper, baking spices and cloves. Full, rich and concentrated, it’s still a bit taut with very crisp acid and firm finely textured tannins, giving a long berry laced finish. Consider drinking it from 2013 to 2025+.” WA

Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz, South Australia 2007 750ML ($69.95) $49 special
Wine Advocate 93 points “Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2007 St Henri Shiraz is a little closed at this stage, revealing subtle earthy notes over crushed blackberries, pencil lead, toast, game, smoky bacon and tree bark. Medium bodied, elegantly fruited and still very tight-knit, the palate offers beautiful purity structured with firm chewy tannins and very crisp acid that should see it through a long life. Consider drinking it 2013 to 2022+.” WA

Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz, South Australia 2008 750ML ($69.95) $49 special
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “Like virtually all of Penfolds’ top-end reds, this is full bodied and densely concentrated. As it’s aged solely in large vats, there’s no oak influence and the wine needs a bit of bottle age to come around. For now, it’s a bit monolithic, showing hints of mint, black olive and ripe raspberries before ending long and fine. Drink 2017–2030, and perhaps beyond.” WE

Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz, South Australia 2009 750ML ($69.95) $49 special
Wine Spectator 94 points “Supple, offering nubby tannins around a gorgeous core of currant and pomegranate, the flavors floating easily into the long, expressive finish, hinting at green tea and guava as the finish rolls on serenely. Shows intensity without density, coming together seamlessly. Drink now through 2025.” WS

Dominio de Pingus Flor de Pingus, Ribera del Duero 2012 750ML ($109.95) $89 special
“The 2012 Flor de Pingus is produced with the fruit (100% Tempranillo) from 16 plots of vineyards in La Horra (Burgos) in Ribera del Duero. Malolactic fermentation was carried out in barrels (50% new, 50% second-use) where the wine aged for 16-18 month. The wine is big and rich with loads of black cherry and blackberry fruit, with subtle notes of tar and pencil lead. Plenty of grip from the new oak…recommend laying it down for 6-8 years to mature.”

Case-12 Domaine des Cassagnoles Gros Manseng, IGP Cotes de Gascogne 2014 750ML ($149.95) $99 special
“The crisp summer sipper is from the South-West of France in a lesser-known IGP (formerly Vins de Pays) near appellations such as Armagnac and Madiran. The Domaine produces tradional regional wines as well as blends with international grape varietals. This wine is light to medium in body and has delightful notes of fresh lemon, white peach and green herbs. It makes a great pairing with light salads, white fish and shellfish with garlic sauce.”

Special Feature

Chenin Comes Early
Philippe Foreau – Domaine du Clos Naudin

Philippe Foreau is the third generation of his family to run the Domaine du Clos Naudin, which was founded by his grandfather in 1923. It is a small domaine with 11.5 acres of Chenin Blanc in the northeast corner of Vouvray. The vineyards, the main two being Les Perruches and Les Ruettes, lie along the middle of the hill with a full south, southeast and southwest exposure. The vines average 45 years in age and are planted mostly on argile-silex (clay and flint) soil.

Harvest is done manually through multiple passes through the vineyard. The wines are fermented in 300 liter barrels. Philippe does not allow malolactic fermentation and the wines are never chapitalized: sweeter styles are only achieved when the vintage allows for a particular level of ripeness in the grapes. He produces about 55% still wines and 45% naturally sparkling wines, which he aged in a cellar carved into the limestone. The sparkling wines are aged on their lees for at least 48 months with no stirring after fermentation. This traditional style of winemaking is becoming rare in the appellation, where mechanization is taking over and driving costs down at the expense of quality and character.

Foreau produces astonishingly aromatic wines, with a remarkable ability to age. We are excited to offer a range of styles and older vintages.

Philippe Foreau – Domaine du Clos Naudin New Arrivals

Philippe Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Brut 2010 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
Joel B. Payne–Vinous 89 points “Bright yellow. A pure bouquet evokes candied citrus fruits, wild spices, pear skin and quinine. Juicy and penetrating on the palate, offering lively orange zest and orchard fruit flavors along with hints of anise and honeysuckle. Finishes on a chalky mineral note, with good focus and length.” JP

Philippe Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Sec 2011 750ML ($41.95) $33 special
Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2011 Vouvray Sec is a bright-colored, rather lean and greenish flavored Vouvray with precise and very subtle aromas of lemons, green apples, white peach, mushrooms, weed, herbs (fennel blossoms) and a dusty, almost mealy terroir character. On the full-bodied palate the wine is extremely pure and vibrant and the tension and agility of this only superficially lean wine is almost electrifying and full of finesse and elegance. The finish is very long and gives an aging potential of 20 or more years. Bottled with 3.8 grams of residual sugar, this is a very digestible wine in a very personal Foreau-style.” WA

Philippe Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Demi-Sec 2011 750ML ($41.95) $36 special
Importer note “Foreau does not produce a Demi-Sec every year. All depends on the level of ripeness at time of harvest. When a Demi-Sec is released by the domaine, it can carry somewhere between 8 and sometimes as much as 20 grams or so of residual sugar but, more often than not, a Foreau Demi-Sec will be at the 8 to 12 grams RS level. Obviously, each year develops from its own unique circumstances. As indicated in the general description above, Foreau NEVER chapitalizes to achieve the Demi-Sec level and malo-lactic fermentations are never permitted to occur. All still wines at Foreau are bottled during the spring season following the harvest.”

Philippe Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Moelleux 2009 750ML ($99.95) $69 special
Wine Advocate 96+ points “The golden yellow 2009 Vouvray Moelleux offers an awesome rich bouquet of a full basket of super ripe white and yellow-fleshed fruits with pure and mineral highlighted aromas as well as colored blossoms, yellow paprika, ginger, coriander, white pepper, toasted peanuts and speck. Bottled with 80 grams of residual sugar, this is a full-bodied, complex, and very elegant almost perfect moelleux à la Foreau, a really rich, ripe, sweet and perfectly balanced wine of great finesse and a persistent freshness due to the lingering salinity and piquancy. This great Moelleux is surely made from healthy berries and for all Chenin lovers and their following generations this is a must buy.” WA

Philippe Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Moelleux 2010 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Wine Advocate 93+ points “Straw yellow the 2010 Vouvray Moelleux offers a rather pure but rich nose with aromas of tuffeau, mushrooms, yellow-fleshed plums, honeydew melon, super ripe pears, cooked peaches, ripe and succulent mangos as well as hints of caramel, honey and new oak. On the full-bodied palate this is an extremely elegant and superbly balanced Chenin of great finesse, piquancy and precision with aromas of figs, cooked peaches and pears along with a lingering salinity. To those of you who love the incomparable nature of 2010 this is a wine you should buy.” WA

Philippe Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Reserve Moelleux 2003 ($89.95) $69 special
Wine Spectator 94 points “Jaw-dropping fruit—guava, quince, mango and persimmon—is extremely concentrated and lushly layered. That’s followed by ginger, cream, green almond and smoke notes on a superlong finish, which has a nice bit of earthy grip as well.” WS

Philippe Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Reserve Moelleux 2009 ($119.95) $89 special
Wine Advocate 97 points “What there was in this vintage of botrytis, Foreau reports, essentially went into his 2009 Vouvray Moelleux Reserve. Brown-spiced pear liqueur and quince preserves dominate the proceedings – wreathed in perfume of freesia and lily – and there are buoyancy and elegance, despite viscosity, enormous richness of texture and residual sweetness, that indeed point to the magic nobility rot can convey. Its sense of lift – when combined with luscious, still juicy suggestions of grapefruit and blood orange familiar from the corresponding demi-sec – wards off any risk of palate fatigue. Mysterious botrytis manifestations of stale bread, truffle, and white raisin emerge from the empty glass. This extraordinary achievement will stand with such past great Foreau moelleux reserves as 2005, 2003, and 1989-90 and is likely to merit 30 or more years of consideration. In direct comparison, what strikes one about the 2005 today is its more obvious sense of botrytis and its slightly diminished sense of acidity and lift. But it maintains the edge in sheer complexity.” WA

Wine Advocate 96 points “The grapes for my 2008 Vouvray Moelleux were very rich, golden, even a bit rose-colored, but not botrytized,” says Foreau, who picked it between October 15th and 20th. Vine flower, chestnut honey, Bartlett pear, and spiced pink grapefruit marmalade are suggested on the intoxicating nose and on a palate whose standoff of high acidity and high residual sugar permits free reign to its luscious, oily, honeyed richness; its spiciness; as well as its sheer refreshment. Nor does the almost endless finish of this beauty, lack for a subtly mineral dimension of salt, crustacean savor, and chalk. It should be worth following for at least a quarter century..” WA

Clos Ste Magdeleine

Since 1920, four generations of the Sack-Zafiropulo family has owned the estate. The current generation, Francois Sack, his wife Georgina (a direct descendant) and their sons Jonathan and Grégoire, operate the winery. They own over 20 hectares of vineyards in Bouches-du-Rhone in the Cassis AOC, a sub-appellation of Provence that was recognized in 1936. The vines average between 15-40 years in age and are planted along the terraced slopes of the Cap Canaille.

The estate’s grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed before crushing. Wines are aged in the estate’s large underground cellar beneath the herb-strewn scrubland and limestone soils that make up most of the land in the area. The white is composed of Marsanne, Ugni blanc, Clairette, and Bourboulenc and is characterized by its floral, mint and honey aromas. The rose accounts for only 20% of production and is produced from Grenache, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre.

Follow the Trail to Signorello Estate Winery

In the mid-1970s, Ray Signorello Sr. purchased the 100 acre estate located on the Silverado Trail in the Napa Valley. He began planting and cultivating Chardonnay grapes to sell to local wineries. With the bountiful harvest of 1985, he was able to produce his own wine, and decided to convert the estate into a winery. A few years later, Ray decided to plant Cabernet Sauvignon and it quickly became to dominate varietal planted over the next few years. Today, the Chardonnay vines lie on the valley floor in Yolo Loam soil. The Cabernet and other red grapes are planted along the hillside in Hambright-Rock Outcrop soil. There are 42 acres planted to vines.

Ray Sr.’s son Ray Jr. began assisting his father not long after the estate was founded. Since his father passed in 1998, he took the reins and continued with his father’s aim of producing richly structured and intensely flavored wines with early accessibility and long aging potential. The winemaking begins in the vineyard with devoted care and attention to the vines throughout the growing season. The grapes are hand-harvested and triple sorted. The wines are handled gently during their aging process which occurs in medium-plus toast French oak barrels. On average, the Cabernet is aged for 22 mos in barrel and the Chardonnay for 11 mos. All of the wines are made exclusively from estate-grown grapes.

Signorello Vineyards Hopes Cuvee Chardonnay, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($79.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Robert Parker 92 points “The 2012 Chardonnay Hope’s Cuvée is a successful rendition of an old-styled California Chardonnay with lots of oak intermixed with a buttery richness as well as plenty of freshness and precision. Made from old vines (33 years), it is a dense, rich, generously wooded effort with plenty of fruit and character. Think of it as a blend of a French white and a traditionally styled California Chardonnay. Not everyone will like it, but I love it. Drink now-2018.” RP

Signorello Vineyards Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($99.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Case-6 Signorello Vineyards Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($549.95) $428 pre-arrival special (that’s only $41.33/bottle!)
Robert Parker 91+ points “The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a blend of 93.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6.5% Cabernet Franc from the estate vineyards on the Silverado Trail, south of Stags Leap. Made in a good structural style with plenty of barrique in the background as well as lots of blackcurrant, licorice, new saddle leather and spice characteristics, this tastes like a Cabernet Sauvignon made by someone of Italian origin. I say that because of its tannic structure and spice. This serious, full-bodied, concentrated 2012 will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well for two decades.” RP

Signorello Vineyards Padrone Proprietary Red, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($199.95) $149 pre-arrival special
Robert Parker 94 points “The 2012 Proprietary Red Blend Padrone is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot. It reveals more structure and tannin than its younger sibling following its élevage in barriques. The color is a saturated purple and the nose offers up aromas of blackberries, blueberries, forest floor and charcoal. While approachable, this full-bodied 2012 requires 3-4 years of bottle age, and should evolve for two decades or more.” RP

Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Padrone (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) boasts a blockbuster nose of blackberries, blueberries, camphor and acacia flowers. Sweet tannins and a wonderful sucrosity and ripeness on the palate conceal some serious structure. This pure, long, full, rich wine possesses lots of black fruits as well as an impressive finish that lasts nearly 45 seconds. It should be consumed over the next 15-20 years.” WA
