Sloan Proprietary Red, Napa Valley 2003 750ML ($299.95) Was $219, Now $199, 5 bottles available
Robert Parker 96+ points “The 2003 was made by Martha McClellan and the viticulture looked over by David Abreu. The 2003 Sloan, if slightly less prodigious than the perfect 2002, remains a young wine. Notes of vanillin, espresso roast, blackberries, scorched earth, camphor and hints of charcoal and barbecue meat jump from the glass of this spicy, rich, provocative Cabernet Sauvignon. With a full-bodied mouthfeel, sweet tannin and adequate acidity, the blend includes 14% Cabernet Franc and 86% Cabernet Sauvignon from this extraordinary hillside vineyard above Auberge de Soleil in mid-Napa Valley. This wine is 2-5 years away from full maturity, and should last for another decade.” RP 6/2013

Owen Roe Sharecropper’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley 2013 750ML ($17.95) $14 special

This wine exudes juicy aromas of pomegranate, blackberry and tobacco spice. Flavors of jalapeno, hints of eucalyptus and mint and a balanced mouth-feel finish with bright acidity and firm tannins. We recommend opening this wine now and enjoying it at a young age, however, this will age well for 4-6 years when properly cellared.”

“Our 2012 La Storia Cabernet is a wine worthy of aging, showing abundant varietal aromas and flavors of blueberry, blackberry and black licorice, with a hint of herbs and ripe olives. The predominately French oak aging contributes aromas of cinnamon, vanilla, cocoa dust and slight smokiness. The mouth feel is fresh and juicy with balanced acidity and very soft tannins for a young wine. Due to the relatively lower sugar at harvest the alcohol content is modest and the acidity is relatively high and that will extend the longevity of this wine. Age 4 – 7 years.” Winery Notes

Case-12 Gachot-Monot Bourgogne Rouge Les Muses 2012 ($319.95) $219 special (that’s $18.25 / bottle)
Kermit Lynch “The wines of Gachot-Monot represent some of the best values in the KLWM portfolio – not because they are the least expensive, but because they offer an outstanding price-to-quality ratio. Damien Gachot may work the vineyards of the lesser known Côtes de Nuits Villages appellation, but he works his vines as if they were premier cru fruit from Nuits-Saint-Georges. This fifth-generation vigneron and his Danish wife, Lise, farm twelve hectares in the village of Corgoloin, in between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune. They first came to Kermit’s attention via a trusted source—the master of La Tâche himself, Aubert de Villaine—and it certainly doesn’t hurt that Damien also received an endorsement from his friend, Bertrand Chevillon, either. Ever-smiling and tireless in his work, Damien was first saluted by the Hospices de Beaune as a young talent to be watched. We have been proud to import his wine since the 2000 vintage.” The Bourgogne Rouge “A great working man’s Bourgogne rouge from his vines in the deep south of the Côte de Nuits. 2006 Vintage Champagnes

Vintage Champagne is a rare occurrence for the famous region to which we give such high regard and attribute superior quality. Only about 10% of the regions total production turns out to be Vintage Champagne. Releasing a vintage Champagne is solely up to the producer, rather than the region officially declaring the quality of the vintage. Due to this decision being solely up to the Champagne house, you may at times see some smaller producers with a vintage Champagne who survived a ‘not so great’ vintage due to their location, their personal escapement of bad weather and a whole lot of luck, as opposed to other parts of the region. The reason for this ‘3 out of every 10 years’ hype for vintage Champagne really all comes down to the weather, which is the critical factor and the gamble every producer will experience each and every vintage.

Champagne is the most Northerly region in France and also the coolest, therefore weather conditions can be extremely detrimental to vineyards and full of unpredictability. The idea of Non-Vintage Champagne stemmed from the extreme variations in weather conditions every year, and the idea seemed to ensure consistency to the product rather than being completely dependent on the particular year. In accordance with strict French laws, vintage Champagne must consist entirely of grapes harvested that year.

The 2006 vintage in particular consisted of a growing season full of contrasting (but thankfully) perfectly timed weather changes and excellent conditions during the tail end of harvest, true to many other parts of France that year. Wet, cold weather conditions just prior to harvest season created a great amount of stress for most growers, who were worried that the berries would not ripen sufficiently. A burst of beautiful, sunny days and crisp nights swept the region in September and saved the fruit from what could have been serious botrytis conditions.

The Chardonnays combine a beautiful richness with freshness creating great balance, and both Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier were picked with minimal botrytis allowing any affected grapes to be easily hand-sorted out. When the vintage wines were finally released, our friend Terry Thiese remarked “I was struck by the incisiveness of the chalky mineral blade-end that so many of them showed, especially the Chardonnays. At this point I’d say I really really like this vintage, and it appears reliable. It doesn’t suggest any adolescent funk.” Cheers to what could have been a detrimental vintage in one of our favorite wine regions, but turned out to be pretty spectacular!

Dusty, gripping lemon rind and blood orange flavors give way to deeper red berries in the mid-palate, picking up a hint of chalky minerality on the back half. Finishes with firm grip, very good length and lingering strawberry and vanilla notes.”ST

Lassaigne Millesime Brut Blanc de Blanc 2006 750ML ($99.95) $79 special, 10 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points “Sourced from Le Cotet, La Grande Cote and Les Paluets–which last-named is southeast-facing and arguably the top site in Montgueux, opines Lassaigne–his 2006 Brut Nature is intriguingly and alluringly scented with fresh lemon and apricot, peony and narcissus, rowan and pistachio, along with sea breeze intimations and a pungency of struck flint. Startlingly silken and creamy, yet focused and vibrantly juicy this adds a sort of shimmering, crystalline sense of stoniness to an almost kaleidoscopically interactive finish. It ought to merit following for 6-8 years. Incidentally, Lassaigne believes that a purer expression of vintage character will always be achieved by maturing this cuvee in tank.” WA

Louis Roederer Cristal Brut Millesime 2006 750ML ($299.95) $219 special, 4 bottles available
James Suckling 97 points “Deep pinot-driven presence is the first and lasting impression. Power with control. Superfine bead, bread and spiced biscuits, candied ripe red fruits and a sense of tight-knit complexity. Some grapefruit, lemon pith & gently flinty notes too – impressive nose. In the mouth it is rich, powerful, mouth-filling and flavoursome with a core of the same biscuity red fruit flavour, savoury nutty notes and a wrap of assertive, persistent acidity that holds rich powerful flavour deep and focused whilst maintaining a polished, gently creamy texture. Long chalky bread and biscuit finish. A superb Pinot-driven vintage.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “–Collectibles– This elegant version shows beautiful texture and a sense of finesse despite the underlying power of vibrant acidity and smoky minerality. The palate offers a finely layered mesh of blackberry, poached pear, almond pastry, lemon zest and pickled ginger flavors. Drink now through 2028.” WS

Vilmart & Cie Coeur de Cuvee Premier Cru Brut 2006 750ML ($179.95) $129 special, 2 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 95 points “Explosive and powerful to the core, Vilmart’s 2006 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is once again superb. Rich, textured flavors abound in a Champagne that impresses for its resonance and depth. The flavor profile leans very much towards the brighter, Chardonnay side of the spectrum, while the Pinot is felt in the wine’s pliancy and overall depth. Readers who can find the 2006 are in for a real treat. This is a dazzling showing from Vilmart. The Coeur de Cuvée is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot from Les Blanches Voies Hautes in Rilly-la-Montagne”

“The 2012 Bourgogne Cuvee Chant de Muse, which comes from two climats on the limit of the Chambolle appellation, has better delineation on the nose compared to the Bourgogne Rouge, the fruit a little darker. The palate is medium-bodied with dark cherry and blackberry notes. The acidity is higher with an edgy and tense finish. This is very fine. Drink now-2018.”–Wine Advocate
Rustic, vibrant Pinot Noir at a great price.”

Silky-sweet and floral, with lovely inner-mouth juiciness to its red berry flavors. Intense and staunch on the palate, with plum, raspberry, cherry, herb and chocolate flavors, this runs long on the finish, with power and acidity to spare. Hold until 2017, then drink through 2035. Cellar Selection.” WE
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “(70% tempranillo, 20% garnacha, 7% mazuelo and 3% graciano; fermented in large oak vats and aged for 28 months in small French and American oak barrels of varying age): Inky purple. Flamboyant aromas of ripe berries, incense, potpourri, smoky oak and pungent minerals. Lush, fleshy and alluringly sweet, offering intense black and blue fruit flavors that coat the palate. Case-12 Alvear Pedro Ximenez de Anada, Montilla-Moriles2011 375ML ($999.95) $479 special (that’s only $39.92/half-bottle!)
Robert Parker 100 points “Alvear’s 2011 Pedro Ximenez de Anada is the most amazing Pedro Ximenez I have ever tasted. It may also be one of the first to be vintage-dated. The grapes were hand-harvested in September, then allowed to dry in the sunshine until they began fermentation, which is ultimately arrested by the addition of spirits. The wine spent six months in large American oak prior to being bottled. It is an amazing effort that looks like molasses. Notes of macerated figs, chocolate and caramelized tropical fruits emerge from this full-bodied, unctuously-textured wine. While sweet, it has enough acidity to balance out its richness. This astonishing 2011 Pedro Ximenez will last as long as any reader of this newsletter.” RP
